Is The Matthews haunted?
This has been the question for generations.
First performed 42 years ago.
Summer in the Black Hills is the best. With the return of the comedy melodrama, “The Phantom of The Matthews Opera House,” new traditions for friends and family are created. This show was written for us by Paul Higbee in 1976– FORTY-TWO years old! Good old-fashioned belly laughs come from this wonderful cast from Black Hills State University’s theater department. You’re going to love the heckling cowboys and vivacious card girl!
Heckling | Cheering | Family fun!
Follow the card girl’s appropriately timed signs! Kids (and plenty of adults) love this part of the show. We have unruly, heckling cowboys, snooty church ladies, a nasty villain, his floozy girlfriend (with a heart of gold), a zany maintenance guy, and of course, Mary and Gary–America’s sweethearts.
We have beverages
Grab your family and friends and make a night of it. We even have cold beverages at the cash beer & wine bar — water and soft drinks too!
7:30 p.m.
*no show on July 4*
*Note: There will NOT be a July 4 show.
Under the direction of BHSU Professor, Bert Juhrend, the performances will be staged in the beautifully restored Matthews Opera House, one of the West’s oldest and most beloved venues. Located at 612 Main Street, Spearfish, the opera house is located on the second floor, just above The Matthews Art Gallery. The theater first opened in 1906. We invite you to step into history, take a seat, and settle in for some great laughs and villainous hijinks.
