May at The Matthews: A Month of Movement, Magic, and Music
There’s something happening at The Matthews—and you can feel it.
This May, our stage isn’t just a place for performance, it’s a portal. A space where stories unfold, bodies rest and move, imaginations stretch, and music echoes through the walls of one of South Dakota’s most historic venues. Whether you’re here for a candlelit sound bath, Shakespeare in full bloom, or a boot-stomping night of country music, you’re part of something bigger: a growing creative force in the heart of Spearfish.
Here’s what’s coming up:
Candlelight Yoga & Sound Healing | May 4 – SOLD OUT
We’re starting the month with a deep breath and deeper presence—and clearly, Spearfish is ready for it. This free, two-hour experience with Polly Garrett has officially sold out, and we couldn’t be more thrilled by the response. One hour of gentle, grounding yoga followed by a full hour of immersive sound healing in our candlelit theater… it’s no wonder it filled up fast.
If you missed your chance, don’t worry—we’re already looking into more events like this in the future. Stay tuned, and thank you for helping us bring new forms of wellness and creativity to The Matthews.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream | May 9–11, 13, 16–18
Magic, mischief, and moonlight—our community theater is taking on Shakespeare, and we’re pulling out all the stops. Directed by Joanna Mechaley and powered by some of the most talented performers in the region, this production brings The Bard’s beloved tale to life in a way that’s vibrant, funny, and full of heart. If you’ve never seen A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this is your moment. If you have—you’ve never seen it like this. (Psst: May 13 is Service Industry Night, because we see you, and you deserve a little magic too.)
Figure Drawing in the Theater | May 15, 6–9 PM
Art meets atmosphere in this 18+ free workshop facilitated by BHSU Art Professor Desy Schoenewies. Costumed models, music, and adult beverages come together for an unforgettable night of drawing, creativity, and connection. Whether you’re a total beginner or a seasoned artist, you’re welcome here. BYO art supplies. Spring-themed costumes are optional (but encouraged). Donations go toward more free programming like this—thank you for helping keep the arts accessible to all.
George Ducas in Concert | May 30, 7 PM (Doors at 6)
We’re closing out May with the kind of night The Matthews was made for, one stage, one artist, and a room full of people who love a good song. George Ducas brings a rare mix of country tradition and heartfelt storytelling to every performance. You’ve heard his words in the voices of legends like Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood—but when George sings his own songs, like his chart topper “Lipstick Promises”, it hits different.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or just love discovering great live music, this show is your chance to hear one of country’s most respected voices up close, right here in Spearfish. VIP tickets and meet & greet passes are limited, and every seat in the house promises a great view.
Join us for a night of music, connection, and a little country soul.
Tickets are going fast. Don’t wait!
At The Matthews, every event is an invitation. To step into something beautiful. To connect. To grow. To remember why the arts matter—and why they belong to all of us.
We can’t wait to see you in May.
