As a part of the Big Read Spearfish, The Matthews, in partnership with Level Wine Bar, is hosting a 1920s-themed speakeasy night.
Mar. 31, Free (with password)
This event will take place at Level Wine Bar, 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Mar. 31. It is free and open to the public. Patrons only need the secret password (“Heebie Jeebie”) to gain admission. Level is located at 604 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD.
The Level Wine Bar speakeasy is the second speakeasy event The Matthews has hosted. The first one, held Feb. 26 at Crow Peak Brewery was a big success. “We were very happy to see how many people came dressed in period costumes,” says Jayne Rose, marketing manager at The Matthews. “We’re hoping that folks will come out to the Level with the same enthusiasm.”
As was the speakeasy practice during the 1920-30s, admittance into these “illegal” establishments during Prohibition required the proper password. Find the password on event posters throughout Spearfish, at www.matthewsopera.com/password, or call 605.642.7973 and ask for the Level Wine Bar password.
Patrons are encouraged to come dressed in 1920s attire or, in the spirit of “The Maltese Falcon,” dressed as detectives. The evening includes prizes for best male and female costumes, refreshments, and live music by The Darning Hearts. They are a duo out of Rapid City, that will be performing their unique mix of Appalachian and 1920s and 30s swing music during the event.
“We are happy to support the opera house by participating in an event that brings people downtown to socialize and enjoy a fun evening. It’s the perfect thing after a long winter,” comments Bryan Johnson, owner of Level Wine Bar.
“It’s wonderful to work with Level Wine Bar on this unique, fun night. When local businesses support and get involved with the arts, it helps expand our reach into the community faster and farther than we could do on our own, ” remarks Ava Sauter, community outreach manager for The Matthews.

Guys-Suit Up | Gals-Dress to Kill
Patrons can win prizes for the best costumes. Come in 1920s attire or in detective costumes. Since the Big Read Spearfish is all about “The Maltese Falcon,” dressing up as private eyes or detectives will be part of the evening.
Live Music
The Darning Hearts, a duo out of Rapid City, will be performing their unique mix of Appalachian and 1920s and 30s swing music during the event. Period appropriate attire is encouraged and awards will be given for best costumes.
