On Friday, September 12, Dick Termes was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.  Dick is one of our favorite gallery artists and we are so proud of him.

(from article in the Rapid City Journal)
Dick Termes recognized that he had talent but never imagined the accomplishments he would achieve. He began his career teaching art but later decided to pursue a different route and become an artist.

“I didn’t think I would be able to become an artist,” Termes said. “I grew up in the Black Hills and we didn’t have artists.”

Today, he is recognized as one of South Dakota’s most original and innovative visual artists.

Termes, a third generation South Dakotan, was raised and has spent most of his career in the Black Hills. He is best known for paintings of 360-degree scenes on spheres called Termespheres.

In 1969, Termes created the “Six-Point Perspective” that gave shape to his spherical art. Over the past 50 years, he has painted nearly 400 spheres.

In 1992, he opened the Termesphere Gallery in Spearfish which attracts admirers from around the globe.

“I’m very honored,” Termes said of his induction. “It’s neat as an artist to get into the world of South Dakotans, which I’ve been part of all my life and it’s nice to be recognized.”

What is the SD Hall of Fame?

The South Dakota Hall of Fame was established in 1974 to recognize and honor those individuals Championing a Culture of Excellence for all of South Dakota. The South Dakota Hall of Fame is a non-profit corporation composed of a full-time professional staff and a board of directors consisting of South Dakotan’s dedicated to developing the organization and who encourage support of the organization. In support of the work of the “Hall” the 1996 state legislature designated the South Dakota Hall of Fame in Chamberlain as the official Hall of Fame for South Dakota.
