“And then I realize, in this sort of strange, hallucinatory moment, that the bug guy is looking kind of good, and the things he’s saying about bugs are really kind of fascinating and it is then that I realized that maybe it has been too long since I’ve been on a date,” so confesses a single mother and self-described restaurant idiot-savant in this thoroughly charming and slyly sweet one-woman play by Theresa Rebeck, the author of The Butterfly Collection and Spike Heels.

“Bad Dates” was written by Theresa Rebeck, a well known playwright and television series creator known for shows such as Smash, Seducing Charlie Parker, and Gossip. “Bad Dates” is the story of Haley, a divorced mother of a precocious twelve year girl. Haley has decided to get back into the game of romance. What ensues is not only a series of ‘bad dates’, but a plot twist that lands Haley into even more trouble. Brenna Meyer tackles the role, which bounces from one idealistic dream to the next. BadDates-webDirector Jon Steven Wiley remarks, “This play has a different type of humor. There is not any of the door slamming seen in many farces, but we will make well use of a door to comic advantage. This is not a situation comedy where much of the humor comes from the reactions of others on stage – there is only Brenna and her imagination. The fun comes from getting to know Haley and her quirky outlook on life. This is a show with a plot, a build, and a finale. This unique showcase has a very limited run and is not to be missed.” An Off-Broadway hit in 2003, “Bad Dates” captures the humor and hysteria of dating misadventures. “Haven’t we all been on a date or two that makes us cringe or laugh?” says Matthews’ Executive Director, Sian Young. “This play captures the essence of that experience. It is very funny. Be sure to have a date night – if you dare! – or girls’ night out by getting your tickets early. We now have online ticket buying that enables you to purchase reserved seats together and print them at home.”
