It’s been six months since I stepped into the role of Executive Director at The Matthews, and every day, I’m reminded of just how special this place is. From the energy of live music and the magic of children’s theater to the quiet power of visual art on the gallery walls, The Matthews is a creative hub unlike any other in the region.
But like so many arts organizations across the country, we’re navigating uncertain times.
Funding from national arts agencies is in flux. We had hoped to bring back The Big Read this year. It’s a beautiful program that brings our community together around a shared book and shared conversations. A federal grant would have made it possible. Now, that funding is up in the air.
That kind of support can be game-changing. It helps us launch new programs and show the value of the arts in our community. But it’s not something we can count on.

Our sustainability doesn’t come from Washington. It comes from Spearfish. From the families who walk through our gallery doors. From the students who step onto our stage. From the people who believe deep down that art matters.
