1920s Pillar

The 4th grade class of Sydney Haugland’s room take on the 1920s.

In the beginning, artist, Cheryl Halsey, and The Matthews’ Ava Sauter, gathered the troops (kids) together for initial instruction and expectations. “Craftmanship” was a term that students had to learn. No sloppy work!

The creation of copper circle decorations will be added to the pillar as part of the era’s art deco design theme.

Another design feature and challenge is how to use the flapper-style dress on the pillar.

Halsey worked with the class on how to best use the flapper dress on the pillar.

The dress was eventually cut apart, dipped into Modge Podge (a decorative white glue), and then draped diagonally over the pillar. See just below.

Ahhh...the smell of Modge Podge.

Photography is a part of each pillar. Shown here are some images from the 20s.

1940s Pillar

Just getting started on this one. The 4th grade class of Lisa Merchen is in charge of creating this pillar. More images to come as it progresses.

The class started by painting the entire pillar in a variety of colors.

1970s Pillar

Pam Gillespie’s 5th-grade class is responsible for the 70s pillar. We think that some of these kids were hippies in a former life.

Here are some of the doodads that will be applied.

Each pillar has an element of hand-worked pieces of art. The kids are drawing & using colored pencils to make 70s era medallions.
