DESCRIPTION:The Matthews Opera House is hosting monthly community art projects in association with The Big Read.  These projects will be held the second Tuesday\, January through March\, in the Matthews Gallery.   \nThe next community art project will be held 4-6 p.m.\, Tuesday\, Mar. 8\, in the art gallery.  The class involves creating paper feathers from recycled book pages.  The Matthews staff will walk you through the process of folding\, cutting\, and finishing handmade paper feathers to be used as bookmarks\, pen toppers\, and more.   \nThis community art project is open to adults and children of all ages.  This is a free event.  All material will be provided.  \n

Graphic novels can be fiction\, non-fiction\, history\, fantasy\, or anything in-between.  Graphic novels are similar to comic books because they use sequential art to tell a story. Unlike comic books\, graphic novels are generally stand-alone stories with more complex plots. Vaselaar enjoys her work and tries to find interesting ways to promote the Library (such as the Crime Spree).  She lives in rural Nobles county with her husband. They have three grown children who\, through no fault of their own\, became “partners in crime” for the Library Crime Spree. When not actively participating in Library crimes\, Vaselaar enjoys genealogy research and presents workshops on genealogy to library organizations\, museums\, senior groups\, and historical societies. \n  \nWhat is the Bellman?\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture.  Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1:00 p.m.  Designed to begin and end within each lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment. \n  \nThe Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.  \n

During the day of the kick-off\, The Matthews Art Gallery is handing out crime scenarios in the gallery based on a detective story based in Spearfish. Those participating will be the detectives. Participating businesses will decorate and dress in the 1920’s detective theme and offer clues that will help the individuals participating solve the crime mystery. Everyone who successfully solves the mystery will be put into a drawing for free tickets to the “Maltese Falcon Radio Show.” The first three drawn will win. The first 50 families to complete the scavenger hunt will receive a free copy of the children’s book\, “The Malted Falcon: A Chet Gecko Mystery” by Bruce Hale.
