SUMMARY:COFFEE TALK & TINKER: Sewing - Microwavable Bowl Holders (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:Basic Sewing: Microwavable Bowl Holders\nBring that coffee shop conversation and your coffee friends – to RE:Create and see what happens when you explore creativity together. \nIn this session\, Elizabeth Freer instructs us on sewing fabric bowl holders that are to be used in microwaves. This is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Sign-ups are requested to make sure we have enough materials. \nNo previous sewing experience required\, but those with machine sewing experience are also welcome! Using simple sewing methods (straight stitching\, turning corners\, basic assembly\, and topstitching)\, we’ll work step by step to make a microwave-safe bowl holder out of 100% cotton materials (fabric\, thread\, and batting). \nThese are not only very simple to make\, these reversible bowl-shaped pot-holders are useful for heating up bowls of soup this winter. Come join us and make your very own soup bowl holder. \nIf you have cotton fabric that you love (it must be 100% cotton to be microwaveable)\, then feel free to bring it with you\, otherwise\, donated materials will be available. If you have a sewing/fabric marking pen (disappearing or Mark-B-Gone) or fabric pencil\, please bring it along. If you are more comfortable hand-sewing\, that is also an option\, but may take longer to complete. \nWe’ll take turns sewing on the two machines in RE:Create\, have some coffee or tea\, and enjoy the morning together.  \nThe workshop takes place in the ArtCentral RE:create makerspace in The Matthews’ art gallery. \nSign-up is preferred\nEven though the workshop is free\, sign-up would be preferred in order for the instructor to be prepared with the correct amount of materials and supplies. Either call the art gallery at 605.642.7973 ext.0 — OR email kirk@matthewsopera.com to add your name to the class list. If emailing\, be sure to provide a phone number.  \nAbout the Instructor\nElizabeth Freer\, a constant crafter\, and dabbler in many art forms is currently managing ArtCentral for The Matthews Opera House. After moving to Spearfish in 2016 from San Francisco\, she started her project management and creative consulting business (Dialogue\, LLC). \nHer hands have been busy creating since she was quite young. In elementary school\, she started working in ceramics; studied sewing in middle and early high school; watercolors\, painting\, batik and photography in high school while she also experimented with fimo and jewelry making on the side; photography and drawing in undergrad; and now regularly works at her knitting while intermittently picking up some of her other favorite crafting hobbies (or debating which book to read). And\, she is always looking for the next thing to try and create. \nCurrently\, she’s enjoying getting to know the many and varied artists\, crafters\, and those who are creatively curious in and around Spearfish\, and she looks forward to welcoming you to RE:Create. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Earth Totem with Becky Grismer (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:Found Object Earth Totems\nKick-off the RE:Create space with Spearfish sculptor\, Becky Grismer. This is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult. \nDetails about this workshop\n Make your own miniature found object sculpture in the style of Becky Grismer’s Earth Totems. Using found objects with interesting shapes\, both naturalistic and man-made\, Becky will guide you through the process of making your own sculpture using found objects and reclaimed materials\, while discussing the symbolism and significance of the totem. \nA totem is usually a natural object\, animal or spirit believed by a particular society to have spiritual significance and is adopted by that group as an emblem. Totems and totem poles function in cultures worldwide as a method of storytelling\, a representation of family or clan\, and spiritual practice. \nBecky’s Earth Totems pay homage to the idea that all things in nature–objects\, plants\, rocks\, and creatures–all possess a sacred\, animated or spiritual essence. Using both man-made and natural objects from the earth\, they are meant to celebrate elements of the natural world around us. The significance of re-using\, reclaiming\, and recycling objects that have been discarded into the totem serves as a way to elevate something viewed as “junk” into something beautiful that can be celebrated. The man-made components also serve as a reminder of what we discard and how it affects our natural resources. \nAbout Becky Grismer\nBecky Grismer (b. 1978 Aberdeen\, S.D. USA) was born and raised in eastern South Dakota. She received her B.A. in Fine Art from Northern State University\, Aberdeen\, SD\, in 2002. She lived and worked in St. Paul\, MN for several years before returning to South Dakota. Becky has exhibited her work in both solo and group shows. Her work has been included in public collections and can be found in private collections throughout the world. She currently resides in Spearfish\, SD\, working as a sculptor. \nVisit Becky’s Website

SUMMARY:ArtCentral FILM FESTIVAL: "If You Build It"
DESCRIPTION:ArtCentral has partnered with The Northern Hills Rotary Club to create a film series that will benefit the community. Through this series\, we use art as a tool – films in this case – to engage our community on specific topics that are relevant to both partnering organizations.  \nFollowing each film\, the co-hosting organization will help facilitate a discussion about ideas presented in the film. Co-hosts for films are organizations in our community and will help us talk about how these issues relate to the Spearfish community. The co-hosts will also actively promote each film to their organization to increase awareness of the film series offerings. \nADMISSION\nAll films are FREE! General Admission. \nFILMS\n“If You Build It” | Jan. 21\, 2018 | 2:00 p.m.\n2013\, NR\, 1h 25m\n Directed by: Patrick Creadon | Location: The Matthews Opera House theater \nCoHosts: BH Home Builders Association and SHS Shop Instructor\, Eric Ligtenberg \n“If You Build It” follows designer-activists Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller to rural Bertie County\, the poorest in North Carolina. They work with local high school students to help transform both their community and their lives. Living on credit and grant money and fighting a change-resistant school board\, Pilloton and Miller lead their students through a year-long\, full-scale design and build a project that does much more than just teach basic construction skills. It shows ten teenagers the power of design-thinking to re-invent not just their town but their own sense of what’s possible. DISCUSSION follows the movie until approximately 5 p.m. \n\n\n\n LEARN MORE about all of the movies in this film series \n\nFeb. 20 |”Waste Land” | 6:30 p.m. | The Matthews theater \n Mar. 20 | “Make No Noise: The Story of a Skatepark” | 6:30 p.m. | The Matthews theater \n Apr. 12 | “More Than a Word” | 6:30 p.m. | BHSU – Jonas Room 305
