SUMMARY:Collage: The Art of World-Invention Workshop (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCollage: The Art of World-Invention\nSpearfish artist (of collage\, sculpture\, illustration)\, Jo Powell\, uses the RE:Create theme of found art with a workshop all about collage. This is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult. \nDetails about this workshop\n One of the most interesting things about collage is that it doesn’t have to follow real-world rules. \nCollage allows the artist to invent new worlds. Worlds where there is no gravity\, where water flows through the desert\, or where children are in charge. In this project\, images from magazines or from old tintypes will be put together to create a sense of a story in pictures. Come join Jo Powell in making a collage and explore new worlds. \nThe workshop takes place in the ArtCentral RE:create makerspace in The Matthews’ art gallery. \nSign-up is preferred\nEven though the workshop is free\, sign-up would be preferred in order for the instructor to be prepared with the correct amount of materials and supplies. Either call the art gallery at 605.642.7973 ext.0 — OR email kirk@matthewsopera.com to add your name to the class list. If emailing\, be sure to provide a phone number.  \nAbout Jo Powell\n\n“Art is an expression. We express what and how we see or feel. Anyone can make art because everyone has feelings and can perceive.” — Jo Powell \n\nThis is a firm belief of the local artist\, Jo Powell. She taught art for 25 years for the American school system overseas in Germany and then retired to the Black Hills where she continues to explore art in its many forms. \nJo Powell received a degree in Fine Arts and Sociology from Benedictine College in Atchison\, KS. She completed an M.A. in Art Education and a PhD in Educational Policy from the University of Illinois. After a 3 year tour of duty with the Army in Germany\, she decided to stay and found a job teaching Elementary and Middle School Art for children of the U.S. military in Germany. 26 years later\, she retired to Spearfish to be near family. She enjoys the small town sense of community\, its arts orientation\, and the inspiration gained from living with the beauty of the Bill Hills. \n

SUMMARY:AUTHOR VISIT: Bob Schneider (RE:Create)

SUMMARY:Workshop: Weaving on a Picture Frame (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:Weaving on a Picture Frame\nWeaving can be simple and easy. We’ll learn basic vocabulary and simple methods using only a small picture frame and some yarn. Anyone can do this as there is no such thing as perfection. All levels of ability\, beginner to expert\, are encouraged to attend. You’ll end up with a picture sized weaving or perhaps a coaster for your hot cocoa mugs! This workshop is lead by Mary Baker and Cindy Wilson. \nThis is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult. \nAbout the Artists\n Mary Baker was born and raised 20 minutes north of San Francisco. She was raised by a family immersed in the liberal arts. Her mother was an art appreciator and her father was a lover of art and history. \nAt the time Mary went to school\, as a baby boomer\, many new schools were built and there was great stock set in schooling children well and fully. Mary always enjoyed the many field trips to museums\, zoos\, historical sites\, and beaches. \nEven as a young child Mary immersed herself in trying many different fields of arts and crafts. She especially\, to the frustration of her mother\, loved picking up objects and using them in “found object art.” At that time she received a rock tumbler as a gift\, which sparked a focused interest in rocks.\n In a brand new high school\, in an art department stocked with anything and everything\, Mary was introduced to ceramics\, printmaking\, spinning fiber\, painting\, and weaving. This was where she developed the sense that three-dimensional arts and crafts were her forte. \nSince school\, Mary and her husband have raised two men in Spearfish. Once the children were old enough to fend more for themselves Mary was able to continue her dabbling in whatever crafts found their way to her. At this time she focuses on fiber\, spinning\, and knitting\, and polishing local rocks to use in jewelry and home decoration. \nMary can be found most Saturday mornings in the summer at the Spearfish Farmers Market where she sells her polished rocks and jewelry. \nCindy Wilson bio not available at the time of this article. \n

SUMMARY:COFFEE TALK & TINKER: Sewing - Microwavable Bowl Holders (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:Basic Sewing: Microwavable Bowl Holders\nBring that coffee shop conversation and your coffee friends – to RE:Create and see what happens when you explore creativity together. \nIn this session\, Elizabeth Freer instructs us on sewing fabric bowl holders that are to be used in microwaves. This is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Sign-ups are requested to make sure we have enough materials. \nNo previous sewing experience required\, but those with machine sewing experience are also welcome! Using simple sewing methods (straight stitching\, turning corners\, basic assembly\, and topstitching)\, we’ll work step by step to make a microwave-safe bowl holder out of 100% cotton materials (fabric\, thread\, and batting). \nThese are not only very simple to make\, these reversible bowl-shaped pot-holders are useful for heating up bowls of soup this winter. Come join us and make your very own soup bowl holder. \nIf you have cotton fabric that you love (it must be 100% cotton to be microwaveable)\, then feel free to bring it with you\, otherwise\, donated materials will be available. If you have a sewing/fabric marking pen (disappearing or Mark-B-Gone) or fabric pencil\, please bring it along. If you are more comfortable hand-sewing\, that is also an option\, but may take longer to complete. \nWe’ll take turns sewing on the two machines in RE:Create\, have some coffee or tea\, and enjoy the morning together. \nAbout the Instructor\nElizabeth Freer\, a constant crafter\, and dabbler in many art forms is currently managing ArtCentral for The Matthews Opera House. After moving to Spearfish in 2016 from San Francisco\, she started her project management and creative consulting business (Dialogue\, LLC). \nHer hands have been busy creating since she was quite young. In elementary school\, she started working in ceramics; studied sewing in middle and early high school; watercolors\, painting\, batik and photography in high school while she also experimented with fimo and jewelry making on the side; photography and drawing in undergrad; and now regularly works at her knitting while intermittently picking up some of her other favorite crafting hobbies (or debating which book to read). And\, she is always looking for the next thing to try and create. \nCurrently\, she’s enjoying getting to know the many and varied artists\, crafters\, and those who are creatively curious in and around Spearfish\, and she looks forward to welcoming you to RE:Create. \n
