SUMMARY:ArtCentral FILM FESTIVAL: "More Than a Word"

Co-hosts for films are organizations in our community and will help us talk about how these issues relate to the Spearfish community. The co-hosts will also actively promote each film to their organization to increase awareness of the film series offerings. \nADMISSION\nAll films are FREE! SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: Screen Printing with Binky Studio (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:Screen Printing and Stencil Making with Binky Studio\nSpend your Saturday learning how to create your own screen printing stencils and then the screen printing process itself.  Learn silk screen printing techniques and stencil making with master screen printer James Canfield\, owner of Binky Studio. History\, art\, and a fun workshop using regular household items to create prints. Lots of “Do It Yourself knowledge”\, homemade and professional equipment will be used. Spray paint may also be used\, weather permitting. Participants are encouraged to bring black and white images and/or text that they would like to incorporate into their projects. \n\nThis workshop has a maximum of TEN participants. Be sure to sign up (info below). \n\nThis is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult. \nThe workshop takes place in the ArtCentral RE:create makerspace in The Matthews’ art gallery. \nSign-up is preferred\nEven though the workshop is free\, sign-up would be preferred in order for the instructor to be prepared with the correct amount of materials and supplies. Either call the art gallery at 605.642.7973 ext.0 — OR email kirk@matthewsopera.com to add your name to the class list. If emailing\, be sure to provide a phone number.  \nAbout James Canfield\nJames Lee Canfield II\, has been screen printing since 1972. He’s worked in almost every field\, from 35-foot multi-color outdoor signage to photo metal computer circuit boards and outdoor stickers. Canfield has also mentored many locals that have gone on to successful businesses\, including Ink Impressions (Rapid City)\, Vast Adventures (Spearfish)\, and Camp Comfort (Spearfish). If emailing\, be sure to provide a phone number.  \nAbout Mary Baker\nMary Baker was born and raised 20 minutes north of San Francisco. She was raised by a family immersed in the liberal arts. Her mother was an art appreciator and her father was a lover of art and history. \nAt the time Mary went to school\, as a baby boomer\, many new schools were built and there was great stock set in schooling children well and fully. Mary always enjoyed the many field trips to museums\, zoos\, historical sites\, and beaches. \nEven as a young child Mary immersed herself in trying many different fields of arts and crafts. She especially\, to the frustration of her mother\, loved picking up objects and using them in “found object art.” At that time she received a rock tumbler as a gift\, which sparked a focused interest in rocks.\nIn a brand new high school\, in an art department stocked with anything and everything\, Mary was introduced to ceramics\, printmaking\, spinning fiber\, painting\, and weaving. This was where she developed the sense that three-dimensional arts and crafts were her forte. \nSince school\, Mary and her husband have raised two men in Spearfish. Once the children were old enough to fend more for themselves Mary was able to continue her dabbling in whatever crafts found their way to her. At this time she focuses on fiber\, spinning\, and knitting\, and polishing local rocks to use in jewelry and home decoration. \nMary can be found most Saturday mornings in the summer at the Spearfish Farmers Market where she sells her polished rocks and jewelry. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Knitting Basics
DESCRIPTION: \n \nLet’s learn how to knit.\nIn this session\, you will learn the basics of knitting including how to cast on (start a project)\, knit\, purl\, and cast off (finish a project). For this workshop\, we will knit a dishcloth. The instructor is Sheila French. \nThis is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. \nAbout the Instructor\nSheila French began knitting at age 10. She sat by the fireplace on winter evenings with her mother. In the beginning\, her mother would have to cut her knitting off the needle because it was too tight. Year after year she would give it another shot until she mastered it. By high school\, she was knitting sweaters. \nBy age 10 she had already learned to embroider\, at 16 she began weaving\, and at 17\, she tackled her first quilt. Fiber arts are definitely in Sheila’s blood. Every evening as the day draws to a close\, you will find her with a needle of some sort in her hand working on her next creation. \n
