SUMMARY:FILM FESTIVAL: "Me\, The Other" (ArtCentral)
DESCRIPTION:ArtCentral has announced the ArtCentral Film Festival – Season 2 to be shown at The Matthews in 2018. The films run from September through November\, for a total of four movies. The Northern Black Hills Rotary Club again partners with us to help bring this quality series of films to Spearfish. Through this series\, we use art as a tool – films in this case – to engage our community on specific topics that are relevant to all members of our community. \nALL MOVIES ARE FREE \nMe\, The Other | Sept. 18\, 2018 | 6:30 p.m.\n2018\, NR\, 110 minutes\nDirected by: Shidan Majidi \nLocation: The Matthews Opera House theater \n“Me\, the “Other” is a documentary film about a diverse group of twelve students from diverse backgrounds (ethnic\, racial\, religious\, and sexual orientation) living on the frontlines of prejudice by asking the questions we don’t discuss in classrooms\, workplaces\, and social places. Through their struggles and accomplishments\, we find ourselves in each of them. Otherness’ is never one thing. The film is the centerpiece of a platform for creating conversations about what connects us and what keeps us apart. \nDISCUSSION follows the movie until approximately 9 p.m. \n\nLEARN MORE about each of the films. \n\n  \nTRAILER

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag: Canyon Hills Project - One Year Later
DESCRIPTION:Speakers present their research and results on the evaluation of a year-long art residency program with the Canyon Hills Center\, a youth psychiatric facility in Spearfish. The study evaluated daily scores of the students who participated in the weekly art program to explore possible relationships between the program and positive behavioral changes. The residences were built around the theme of “Telling Your Story.” This theme encouraged emotional exploration\, self-expression\, creativity\, and inspiration. \nThe program goal was to provide broad exposure to many different forms of art and artists\, with the overlying goal of improving the lives of residents and creating a better environment for both residents and staff. Local artists provided two to five-week residencies in various areas of the arts\, including dance\, theater\, pottery\, collage\, sculpture\, songwriting\, and poetry\, to name a few. Results presented in this talk show the analysis after an entire year of the program. \nSpeakers currently scheduled to present are Alex Giles\, BHSU student researcher\, and a representative from the Canyon Hills Center. \nAbout Alex Giles\nAlex Giles is a junior at Black Hills State University studying psychology. Her expected graduation date is May of 2019. She is currently on two undergraduate research teams for the university\, with emphasis in the areas of art therapy and pain. After graduation\, she plans to go to graduate school and study clinical psychology. \nMade possible by…\nIn 2017\, the Spearfish Area Community Foundation granted the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center (MOH) $10\,000 for a year of residencies at the Canyon Hills Center. Funding covers materials\, staff time\, potential travel expenses\, and the payment of artists. \n  \nWhat is the Bellman?\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture.  Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1:00 p.m.  Designed to begin and end within each lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.
