SUMMARY:The Talbott Brothers - Subscription Series
DESCRIPTION:The second event of The Matthews’ 2019-20 Subscription Series will take place on Nov. 14\, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. \nBlood is thicker than water and there’s nothing like family creating music together to prove it. With contrasting blood-harmonies and left-handed/right-handed guitar playing\, singer-songwriter duo The Talbott Brothers combine rock\, blues and pop with honest storytelling. \nNick and Tyler were born and raised in Imperial\, a small town in Southwestern Nebraska\, just a stone’s throw from the Colorado border. They began writing and performing together before relocating to their mother’s birthplace of Portland\, Oregon. Tyler\, the youngest (lead vocals\, baritone guitar\, harmonica) and Nick\, the oldest (backing vocals\, lead guitar) discovered their love of music after digging their dad’s old dreadnaught guitar out of the basement and teaching themselves to play along to Johnny Cash\, Bob Seger and the Beatles on vinyl. \nFollowing the release of 2017’s GRAY\, they found themselves in front of sold out crowds in the US and sharing the stage with ZZ Ward\, Johnnyswim and AJR. Ear to the Ground Music dubbed the record as one of the ‘Top 5 Albums of the Year’ stating it as\, “equal parts optimistic and captivating\, inspiring and hopeful.” Through rigorous touring and over half a million streams on Spotify\, they continue to build a strong and loyal fanbase wherever they go. \nWebsite | Spotify | Facebook

SUMMARY:JAS Quintet with Jami Lynn
DESCRIPTION:Subscription Series Kick-off!\nJAS Quintet is one of South Dakota’s premier jazz ensembles. Formed in 2012 and based in Sioux Falls the ensemble continues to perform concert and festival dates throughout the region. JAS features the classic jazz quintet instrumentation of trumpet\, saxophone\, piano\, bass and drums. Their repertoire is a diverse mix of old and new\, featuring many original compositions and arrangements by members of the band. \nThis performances will be the West River debut of their new album “Bird Ritual Interrupted.” \nThis event is part of the 2019-20 Subscription Series. Find out more and purchase the season HERE. \nConcerts include favorites from Wayne Shorter\, Herbie Hancock\, Miles Davis\, Clifford Brown\, Thelonious Monk\, Duke Ellington\, and contemporary artists. You are sure to hear many familiar tunes during a JAS concert along with a few new jazz classics. The members of the JAS Quintet are recognized as some of the finest jazz musicians and educators in the region. Touring extensively throughout South Dakota as a part of the South Dakota Arts Council’s Touring Artist program\, the JAS Quintet has established a reputation as one of the top jazz ensembles in the region. \nJAS Quintet Band Members\n\nJoel Shotwell – Saxophones\nJim Speirs – Trumpet & Flugel Horn\nJeffrey Paul – Piano\nAndrew Reinartz – Bass\nDaniel Heier – Drums\n\nWith Special Guest from Jami Lynn\n \nJAS Quintet will also be joined by South Dakota singer Jami Lynn. Jami’s roots are in the old-time country\, folk\, and polka of the Northeastern South Dakota jamborees of her childhood\, but a love for the great ladies of jazz developed right alongside her love of the banjo. \nWhile studying classical voice at the University of South Dakota\, Jami recorded two full-length albums and wrote her thesis\, “Early American Folk Music of the Upper Midwest” which introduced her into the folklore world of cowboys\, settlers\, lumberjacks\, and miners. The resulting recording\, Sodbusters was featured in the Smithsonian’s Shared Harmonies Project. While solo jazz pieces by Billie Holiday\, Fats Waller\, and Gershwin always work their way into solo performances\, sitting in with the Sioux Falls-based\, Dakota Jazz Collective\, and jazz/funk band\, Polyphase\, has eventually led Jami to a full-on collaboration with bassist Andrew Reinartz. Released in October of 2017\, the resulting work showcases Jami Lynn’s vocally driven jazz originals and some of her favorite standards as re-imagined by Reinartz\, pianist Jeff Paul\, and percussionist Daniel Heier. \nWhen not performing for public audiences\, Lynn also brings folk music to elementary students and hospital systems through the SD State Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools program and Touring Artists program. She is currently based out of Spearfish\, SD.
