SUMMARY:Eliza Blue: Live from the Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Streaming live from her ranch in Northwestern South Dakota\, join writer & folk-singer Eliza Blue with special guest Todd Larson of Eclectic Wreck for a special Facebook Live performance on July 9 at 7:00 pm MT. Eliza will be sharing songs as well as stories from her new book “Accidental Rancher.” \nThe concert will stream for free on the Matthews Opera House Facebook page. You can follow or view our Facebook page at the link below. \nMatthews Opera House Facebook Page \nAbout “Accidental Rancher”\nWhen Eliza Blue first moved to northwestern South Dakota\, she didn’t plan on staying long. After all\, the singer/songwriter had spent most of her adulthood hopping from place to place. But then she fell in love with a Perkins County rancher — and the land\, the wind\, the livestock and the giant blue expanse of a West River sky. \nNow the former urbanite tackles her daily duties on the ranch — bottle-feeding bum lambs\, milking her dairy cow\, Rita\, and wrangling two young children — while somehow finding time to contemplate and write about life on the high plains. In Accidental Rancher\, Blue shares a collection of these writings\, bringing a new voice and a musician’s grace to the culture of rural America. \nPurchase “Accidental Rancher” \nAbout Eliza Blue\nEliza Blue is a shepherd\, writer & folk-singer. In addition to her weekly column ‘Little Pasture on the Prairie\,’ which is carried by eleven different print publications\, she is a regular contributor to South Dakota Public Radio and Prairie Public Radio with her monthly series: ‘Postcards from the Prairie.’ Her first book\, Accidental Rancher\, a collection of essays about her transition from urban musician ranch wife and mother\, is out now. \nIn her 15 years of performing\, Eliza has worked and played with Billy Talbot (Crazy Horse)\, Dessa\, Charlie Parr\, Channy Leanaugh (Roma di Luna & Polica)\, & fellow Dakotan Jami Lynn\, just to name a few. Other highlights include performances at SXSW\, Red Ants Pants\, CMJ\, and Sioux River Folk Fest. \nAfter years on the road as a traveling musician\, Eliza now works in regenerative agriculture raising fiber sheep and grass-fed cattle with her husband and two children. \nEliza Blue Official Website

SUMMARY:Free Creativity Kits
DESCRIPTION:Every summer the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center hosts several Saturday Kids’ Crafts Days. This is a fun way to engage with children in the community and provide free creative outlets and crafts spanning a variety of mediums and materials. \nWith COVID-19 limiting the number of people we can safely host in our gallery and workspace\, this program will be changing just slightly this summer. \nWe are excited to announce that on select dates this summer\, we will be offering FREE Creativity Kits! These kits will include a collection of materials as well as step-by-step instructions to create that craft. We will also be posting the craft tutorial video on our Facebook page on the Saturday of the craft release. \nThese kits will be free to all kids in the area and can be picked up in the gallery during business hours anytime after the craft kit is released. There will only be about 50 kits made for each craft\, so they will be given out on a first-come-first-serve basis. \nAfter your kiddo has finished their craft\, we would love to see you post a photo of it online using the hashtag #MatthewsCreativityKits. We can’t wait to see what you create! \nCraft Dates:\nSaturday\, June 13 \nSaturday\, June 27 \nSaturday\, July 11 \nSaturday\, July 25

SUMMARY:Stay at Home Sellout
DESCRIPTION:This time of social distancing has been difficult for arts organizations like the Matthews Opera House. A few weekends ago\, we would have been celebrating the opening of “Stepping Out\,” but instead our historic theater seats remained empty. \nBut art doesn’t stop just because we can’t have events. There are still many local artists creating\, local musicians singing\, and local actors just itching to get back to the spotlight. Through our gallery and virtual events\, we have been able to share some of these works with you\, but we need your help to make sure we can keep doing what we’re doing now and in the future. \nThat’s why\, on May 5\, we are putting together a special Giving Tuesday NOW fundraiser! We want to have a “sold out” show\, even if no one will actually be in our theater. How will this work? Here are the details: \n\nAnyone willing to donate will be able to “purchase tickets” to our fundraiser event. Each seat will be $15 and you can even choose your favorite seats! IMPORTANT: There will not be a physical event. Each $15 ticket purchase will be treated as a donation.\nYou can purchase tickets either online\, by calling 605.642.7973\, or by stopping by the gallery during business hours (10 am – 5 pm\, Tuesday – Saturday). $15 donations sent online will have a $1.50 processing fee. No fee will be added to “ticket” donations purchased via phone.\nYou will get a confirmation email thanking you for your contribution. Reply to this email with a selfie picture of you and your family. \nOn Tuesday\, May 5\, we will be putting pictures of the families who purchase seats on the seats they purchase and publishing pictures to social media throughout the day.\n\nIf we can sell out the entire auditorium (all 283 seats)\, we will bring in over $4000 to support the arts in the Spearfish area! \nAt the end of the day\, around 7:30 p.m.\, we will celebrate by releasing our second episode of MOH at Home: Virtual Songbook. We have some incredible South Dakota musicians who are excited to share their music with you.  \nThank you all for your support! And while we can’t see you in our theater for a while\, we hope to see your photo on a seat on Tuesday\, May 5.

Castle\,  Christina D. King\n\n“Warrior Women” is the story of mothers and daughters fighting for Native rights in the American Indian Movement of the 1970s. The film unveils not only a female perspective of history\, but also examines the impact political struggles have on the children who bear witness. In the 1970s\, with the swagger of unapologetic Indianness\, organizers of the American Indian Movement (AIM) fought for Native liberation and survival as a community of extended families. \nWarrior Women is the story of Madonna Thunder Hawk\, one such AIM leader who shaped a kindred group of activists’ children – including her daughter Marcy – into the “We Will Remember” Survival School as a Native alternative to government-run education. Together\, Madonna and Marcy fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother-daughter. Today\, with Marcy now a mother herself\, both are still at the forefront of Native issues\, fighting against the environmental devastation of the Dakota Access Pipeline and for Indigenous cultural values. \nThrough a circular Indigenous style of storytelling\, this film explores what it means to navigate a movement and motherhood and how activist legacies are passed down and transformed from generation to generation in the context of colonizing government that meets Native resistance with violence. \nWatch trailer and find out more

Tad was a strong supporter of the Music Department at Black Hills State University. As well as providing scholarship funds\, he was a major donor toward the purchase of a Steinway piano for the recital hall in Meier Hall. He was a distinguished faculty member in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for nearly forty years. As a result he was well aware of how difficult it is for faculty to find funding for the purchase of equipment for research and teaching. During a decade as head of his department\, he was a driving force in obtaining funding for equipment that would foster the careers of young professors. He was delighted to have the opportunity to quickly make a dream come true for the BHSU music professors who had launched a fund-raising effort to purchase a much needed world class piano. Students and faculty were profuse in their thanks to Tad. Just last fall Sandra sat in on a class through BHSU’s Visitor Pass program and as they left class a student said to her “I’m on my way over to Meier Hall to play on the Steinway. Thank you.” Tad would have loved to hear that comment! \n
