SUMMARY:Bellman Presentation: Spearfish Piano Duet Club
DESCRIPTION:Things are absolutely better in pairs! Join us for the most anticipated Bellman Brown Bag Series of the season on Wednesday\, December 10 at noon in the Matthews Theater. Spearfish Piano Duet Club presents their annual holiday event\, an hour of piano melodies played by four hands. \nIt’s always wise to get here early for a good seat. This event is free and open to the public and the theater typically fills up quickly. \nThe Spearfish Piano Duet Club has performed on the Bellman Brown Bag series since 2006. The popular December program includes holiday music and familiar classical music for two performers on one piano. The Duet Club began in 2003\, under the leadership of the late Synva Chrysler\, as a way for intermediate and advanced pianists to maintain their piano skills and at the same time have fun and enjoy each other’s musical talents. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series… \n\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month.Dr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002.Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment. SUMMARY:Bellman Presentation: Heart Mountain Internment Camp
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Jo Powell shares the powerful history of the Heart Mountain Internment Camp in Powell\, Wyoming. One of ten camps where Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated during World War II. Through stories\, research\, and reflection\, Powell sheds light on this pivotal chapter of American history and its lasting impact.\n\n\nDr. Jo Powell\nDr. Jo Powell is an author\, illustrator\, sculptor and educator in Spearfish.  She is the author of the Coloristory Books\, books which present local history with a coloring book component.  Dr. Powell believes that coloring books can be educational tools\, and has written several about this area of the Black Hills. Her latest book is about the Japanese Incarceration Camp near Cody\, Wyoming.\n\nHeart Mountain Internment Camp\nIn 1941\, when Imperial Japan bombed Pearl Harbor\, the United States responded in several ways. First\, they declared war on Japan and its allies. Second\, the Government rounded up all the Japanese and Japanese Americans on the West Coast\, 120\,000 of them\, and sent them to incarceration camps in the interior of the country for the duration of the war. Although the stated reason for this illegal detainment was to protect the Japanese population\, the reasons are much more complex. This talk will examine this detainment and its causes and its effects on the Japanese and Japanese Americans both then and now.  The topic of illegal detainment\, incarceration of innocent people\, and human rights still has much pertinence in today’s world.\n\n\nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture. SUMMARY:The Lion in Winter
DESCRIPTION:FRIDAY\, OCTOBER 31 PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN CANCELED \nThis October\, step into the candlelit halls of 1183\, where kings and queens wage wars not only on battlefields but at the dinner table. The Lion in Winter\, by James Goldman\, invites you into the turbulent world of King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine—two legendary figures whose marriage is as fierce as their fight for the future of the crown. \nIt is Christmas at Chinon Castle\, and Henry summons his estranged queen\, his three unruly sons\, and a scheming young king of France for a holiday “family gathering” unlike any other. Behind the laughter and biting wit lies a dangerous game of alliances and betrayals\, as each player maneuvers for power in a realm where love is tangled with ambition. \nWith its razor-sharp dialogue\, wry humor\, and unflinching look at the human heart\, The Lion in Winter has captivated audiences for decades. This revival by The Matthews Opera House Community Theater honors its first appearance on our stage in 1999\, breathing fresh life into a timeless battle of wills. \nExpect sumptuous period costumes\, a richly talented local cast\, and an evening that proves history’s grandest dramas are often played out within the walls of a family home. \nPerformances: October 24\, 25\, 26\, 28 & November 1\, 2Fridays & Saturdays • 7:00 pmSundays • 2:00 pm | Tuesday • 7:00 pm \nDirected by Joe Saracco & Charlotte Dougherty \nEleanor (Queen of Aquitaine) ………Shirlene Joseph\nHenry II (King of England)……..Dwight Myers\nAlais (Princess of France)……….Leah Joy\nRichard (Lionheart\, son)…………Patrick Luebben\nGeoffrey (son)…………………….Owen Lichtenberg\nJohn (son)…………………….……John Eisenbraun\nPhillip (King of France)…………..Stephanie Bussiere

SUMMARY:The Lion in Winter
DESCRIPTION:This October\, step into the candlelit halls of 1183\, where kings and queens wage wars not only on battlefields but at the dinner table. \nPerformances: October 24\, 25\, 26\, 28\, 31 & November 1\, 2Fridays & Saturdays • 7:00 pmSundays • 2:00 pm | Tuesday • 7:00 pm \nDirected by Joe Saracco & Charlotte Dougherty \nEleanor (Queen of Aquitaine) ………Shirlene Joseph\nHenry II (King of England)……..Dwight Myers\nAlais (Princess of France)……….Leah Joy\nRichard (Lionheart\, son)…………Patrick Luebben\nGeoffrey (son)…………………….Owen Lichtenberg\nJohn (son)…………………….……John Eisenbraun\nPhillip (King of France)…………..Stephanie Bussiere

SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: Inspecting Carol
DESCRIPTION:October 14th & 15th @ 6:30pm \nThe Matthews Opera House invites community members to audition for Inspecting Carol\, a hilarious holiday comedy that blends backstage drama with festive cheer. When a struggling theater troupe’s production of A Christmas Carol goes wildly off the rails\, expect miscast roles\, onstage mishaps\, and nonstop laughter. \nNo experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \nInspecting Carol – Directed by Max Merchen\nInspecting Carol is a backstage holiday comedy by Daniel J. Sullivan that spoofs both A Christmas Carol and the frantic world of community theater. The play follows a struggling theater company preparing for their annual production of Dickens’ classic. Everything goes wrong: actors forget lines\, the set collapses\, egos clash\, and rehearsal spirals out of control. When the troupe mistakes a clueless wannabe actor for a feared National Endowment for the Arts inspector\, panic sets in\, and desperate attempts to impress lead to even more ridiculous disasters. Full of slapstick\, satire\, and seasonal spirit\, Inspecting Carol is a joyful romp that celebrates the magic (and madness) of live theater. \nPerformance Dates\nDecember 12\, 13\, 14\, 16\, 19\, 20\, 21 \n\nFridays & Saturdays • 7:00 pm\nSundays • 2:00 pm | Tuesday • 7:00 pm\n\nAvailable Roles\n\nZorah Bloch: Founding director of The Soapbox Playhouse. In her 40’s. Extremely self-concerned.\nSidney Carlton: In his 60’s. A founding member of the Company. Kind but somewhat addled.\nDorothy Tree Hapgood: His wife. In her 60’s. English and unable to lose her accent. A founding member.\nLarry Vauxhall: In his 40’s. Tough\, intellectually vain Child of the ’60’s\, still looking for a turn-on. A founding member.\nPhil Hewlitt: In his 40’s. Small\, obsessive usually plays the ineffectual character in any Soapbox production. A founding member.\nWalter E. Parsons: In his 30’s. Recently taken up acting again after a stint in the armed forces. Good natured\, excitable.\nLuther Beauty: A large eleven-year-old. He’s been playing Tiny Tim two years too long. Extremely friendly.\nKevin Emery: A nervous man in the impossible position of managing director. In his 40’s. Afraid of Zorah.\nM.J. (Mary Jane) McMann: In her 40’s. A realist. She long ago realized that the Company hit bottom. She looks on now as a bemused observer. Founding member.

This intimate performance comes on the heels of a big weekend in the Black Hills. Whether you’re winding down after the energy of the Deadwood Jam or just looking for a soul-stirring Sunday experience\, this show offers a chance to slow down\, listen deeply\, and connect through song.\n\nA Kentucky native and the first artist signed to John Prine’s Oh Boy Records in over 15 years\, Waldon has carved out a reputation for raw honesty\, poetic grit\, and deep musical roots. She’ll be joined by her band\, The Muleskinners\, for a set that promises stripped-back storytelling and musical power in equal measure.\nThis is a listening-room experience: seated\, focused\, and unforgettable.\n\nWhat to Expect:A full 90-minute performance with Kelsey Waldon & The MuleskinnersReserved seating in the historic Matthews Opera HouseA quiet\, intimate space to fully engage with the music\n\nGeneral Admission: $25\nPresale Access: June 24–27 using code: GHOST\nPublic On Sale: Friday\, June 27 @ 8am MT\n\nCome early. From that moment\, I knew sound healing would play a vital role in my life. I developed a deep interest in the therapeutic effects of sound therapy\, exploring the use of crystal and Tibetan singing bowls\, gongs\, and various healing instruments.\nThis fascination led me to become a certified Sound Healing Practitioner through multiple esteemed programs\, including the International Sound Healing Academy. Sharing the gift of sound and vibration has been profoundly rewarding\, as I witness the positive impact it has on others.\nI firmly believe that the harmonious integration of yoga\, meditation\, and sound therapy can create profound peace and balance in the lives of my participants. Join me in this journey toward healing and well-being through sound.\n—————————————–\nTammy (aka Wags): I am a Reiki Practitioner and owner of Inner Peace Pathways. I incorporated Sound Healing in 2022 to facilitate mindful listening\, and assist other with the resetting their nervous systems. This has allowed me to offer other options for personal healing.
