SUMMARY:Hank Harris and the Hegg Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy incredible music performed by South Dakota artists during Homegrown Sessions. This series will be ongoing\, so check back frequently for new concert announcements. \nPerforming next as part of our Homegrown Sessions will be Hank Harris and the Hegg Brothers. They will be joined by special guest Jimmy Goings. Enjoy an evening of acoustic folk with local musicians. This performance will be Friday\, October 29. Tickets are $20 adults\, $10 youth & BHSU students. General seating. A cash bar will be available \nHANK HARRIS\nMy musical journey performing in South Dakota has taken me at least a half a million miles through hundreds of towns\, stages large and small\, ballrooms\, opera houses\, libraries\, museums\, bars and eateries\, museums\, community theaters\, schools and cow pastures. From crowds of 15\,000 to intimate small settings. Thousands of people met\, though I can’t remember all their names. \nPlaying with South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands (DD and the Fayrohs\, Red Willow Band and R&B Supply)\, solo\, duos\, trios and an occasional 10-piece horn band has offered me a continuing musical education and opportunity to pursue a life of creating music. Many thanks to the fellow musicians and audiences that have made this possible. Through these journeys\, writing and chasing songs has been a common thread. By drawing from my road experience\, my work with the Adams Museum (Two CDs\, Deadwood Songbooks I and II)\, The South Dakota Railroad Museum (Currently researching and recording a CD collection of train songs)\,12 years as a part of SD Arts Council Touring Artist program\, and 40 years of writing my own songs\, in performance I tell the stories of how these songs come to life. Illuminating the tales of songwriters\, the historical context\, inspiration and the writing process itself. To tell the stories of the storytellers and their journeys\, and then play the songs and let them speak for themselves. It’s all about the story. And the stories are funny\, poignant\, enlightening\, heartfelt\, silly and span the wide and emotional landscape of the human experience. \nJONATHAN HEGG\nJonathon Hegg is the youngest of three musical sons whose parents were lifelong music educators. He graduated from Augustana College (now University) with a degree in musical performance. His joint efforts with his brother Jeremy began with Spooncat! and has moved into duets with him as well as numerous larger configurations. He has had the extreme pleasure to play what he refers to as second keyboard and background vocalist as well as being the mixing engineer of the albums made by Spooncat!\, Holiday Jam\, and anything Hegg Brothers related. He performs music for a living\, which began with his first of three years with A South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. Occasionally he arranges for various ensembles and teaches. \nJEREMY HEGG\nJeremy Hegg\, Music Director for Holiday Jam\, is the oldest son of two lifelong music educators\, grew up in Dell Rapids\, South Dakota\, and received his music degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He is the staff arranger and composer for the Augustana Brass Choir\, Sioux Falls Municipal Band\, and many marching band programs throughout the country. \nAs a performer\, Jeremy is known for his band Spooncat!\, which has performed throughout the region since 1996. He has performed around the country and throughout Europe with artists ranging from Smokey Robinson to Chuck Berry. In recent years\, he has been a featured guest pianist with South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. In 2008\, Jeremy started The Radio Specialists\, a group that includes several Holiday Jam members. Jeremy was also the 2003 recipient of the Mayor’s Award for the Performing Arts. \nJIMMY GOINGS\nOriginally from South Dakota\, Jimmy Goings is famous for being the lead singer and writer for Santa Esmeralda (now Generation Esmeralda) from 1977-1982. He has played with several South Dakota bands\, including Ma’s Boy & Wonderband which were both inducted into the South Dakota Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jimmy has worked with Hank since 1997 when they produced his album “World Beat Cowboy” which went on to win SD Album of the Year. They just finished their sixth Studio Album together. \nListen\n\nCOVID 19 Policies\nIn order to help ensure the safety of all audience members\, performers\, volunteers\, and staff members\, masks will be required during this event regardless of vaccination status. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. SUMMARY:"Once Upon A Shoe" and "Bad Play"
DESCRIPTION:See both “Once Upon A Shoe” and “All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play” in this special double feature performance on Sunday\, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. \n“Once Upon A Shoe” by Joseph Robinette: Mother Goose sadly announces to her children that they must leave their home—a large\, comfortable shoe—and move to an old sneaker “across the tracks.” The children decide to “put on a show” to save their shoe\, and in the best Garlandooney tradition\, they proceed to enact eight of Mother Goose’s best poems. In the audience\, a stranger turns out to be the famous movie producer Cecil B. DeMillstream and\, of course\, he loves the show! The shoe is saved and Mother Goose and her troupe are off to Hollywood. This production is performed by children in grades 2-6. \n“All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play” by Werner Trieschmann: Based on several disastrous theatrical experiences\, “Bad Play” peels back a tattered curtain to examine the process of putting on a show that is less than good. A stuffy narrator (what bad play is complete without a stuffy narrator?) guides the audience through the whole sorry process. We go from the audition—where the director is more worried about roast beef than paying attention to the warm-up exercise\, and the neurotic cast pretends to be bacon—to rehearsals—where a passive-aggressive stage manager gives everyone grief. There’s also a special meeting of the Small Part Support Group and a production of Romeo and Juliet set in a Starbucks with costumes of potato sacks and bowler hats. This production is performed by children in grades 7-12.  \n“Once Upon A Shoe” is produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois \n“All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play” is produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois

Known for his range as a talented lead and harmony singer\, Chet is now also available as a solo performer in addition to ensemble performances. Chet has established himself as a permanent fixture in the South Dakota performing arts community since 1987. He has performed\, toured\, and recorded with local and regional musicians and more than a dozen national acts\, and is listed among many talented musicians in the South Dakota Rock & Roll Music Hall of Fame. Although he is most comfortable performing classic country music\, his musical repertoire and capabilities extend to jazz\, blues\, bluegrass\, rock and roll\, and spiritual genres.  He continues to perform statewide as bassist/vocalist/pianist for The Wilt Brothers Band\, a classic country band performing since the mid-1970s; bassist/vocalist for Campfire Concerto\, an acoustic cowboy music quartet; and bassist for Les Singes Volants\, a gypsy jazz ensemble\, among others. \nConnie Hubbard – Connie Hubbard is no stranger to the Matthews Opera House stage. She has acted\, directed and played in numerous theater productions and concerts over the last seventeen years. Hubbard teaches German language to high school students online\, and to university students at BHSU and SDSM&T. Connie started piano lessons at age 3 and finally finished her music degree at BHSU in 2006. She is so happy to be out of the house and to have the opportunity to play piano with this talented group! Hubbard lives in Spearfish\, has two grown adventuresome kids\, and an awesome husband\, Todd. \nListen\n[arve url=”https://youtu.be/Lg03Mg39uB0″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://youtu.be/AjsHrdS6rVY” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

They showcase America’s dynamic present by combining the diverse talents of four U.S. citizens\, each with a unique cultural background. In this group\, old songs are made new through creative arrangements that highlight the exceptional and well-honed skills of each member. \nAPQ performances strive to counter pervasive prejudices around the issues of race and immigration. In order to help strengthen our country’s social fabric\, APQ desires that its audiences reflect on the notion that as Americans we must acknowledge our differences to discover our commonalities. We must recognize the realities of racism and prejudice in order to build authentic and lasting bonds across cultures and color lines. While we are not responsible for our country’s past\, we are accountable for its future. \n[arve url=”https://youtu.be/NsDwoAr35k8″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \nListen\n\nAPQ Band Members\n\n\nClay Ross is a Grammy Award winning artist and the founder of the Billboard chart topping band Ranky Tanky.
