SUMMARY:Community Mural Painting Session
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we’re inviting you to lend a hand in the creation of the George Martin Memorial Mural. A public painting session will be held on Saturday\, February 26 in the Matthews theater. Sections of the mural will be on display and ready for your brushwork! Come be a part of this larger-than-life\, paint-by-numbers mural project. \nBe sure to wear clothes that can get a little dirty and join us in the theater from 11 am until 3 pm. \nThe mural commemorates the legacy of George Martin\, a life-long citizen\, councilman\, and active Spearfish resident. Once completed\, it will take its place on the side of the Sears building\, facing Old City Hall Square in downtown Spearfish. \nThe concept and design of the work were developed by BHSU associate professor of art Desy Schoeneweis and a group of university students. It incorporates aspects of Martin’s life and personality with the feel of a game board\, with colorful and playful images greeting the viewer at every turn. Roaming across the display are illustrations of the Western Hills Humane Society\, the High Plains Western Heritage Center\, and the D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery and Archives\, all places that Martin held near and dear to his heart. \nWe invite you to put on your grubbies and join us for this exciting community project! This event is appropriate for ages three and up. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Right in the Eye
DESCRIPTION:If the imagination were to incarnate\, it would not be surprising if it took the form of cinematographer Georges Méliès. \nRight in the Eye is a live concert designed as a soundtrack to a montage of silent films by George Méliès (1861 – 1938) considered to be one of the inventors of cinematography.  It is the musical brainchild of Jean-François Alcoléa who has created a magical show where a multi-layered\, evocative and intricate score complements and interprets the otherwise silent films.  A trio of virtuoso musicians are almost a show in themselves\, as they conjure music from an extraordinary array of instruments: basics like piano\, percussion and guitar; fantastic oddities like the aquaphone (ocean harp)\, theremin and melodica; and mundane objects like stemware\, circular saws\, and even plastic take-out lids.  The mesmerizing score and panoply of unexpected sound expertly evokes the technical wizardry\, hilarity\, and stream of invention bequeathed to cinema by Méliès. \n“An exuberant mixed-media feast full of experimental verve.” – The Fountain\, Edinburgh Fringe Festival \n“A magical hour where films\, lighting and music weave a rich tapestry. A unique experience that goes way beyond merely watching very old movies.” – SG Fringe\, Edinburgh \n“It is at once inventive\, elegant\, and moving … right to the core!” – Chronique Festival Avignon \n[arve url=”https://youtu.be/fNIiLCmmD9E” /] \n

She writes a weekly column\, Little Pasture on the Prairie\, that is carried by 17 different print publications\, writes and produces audio “postcards” from her ranch for South Dakota Public Broadcasting and Prairie Public Radio\, and just released her first book\, Accidental Rancher. Her writing has also been featured in The Guardian and the New York Times\, and she is regular columnist for The Daily Yonder\, a national publication for and about rural people. Blue’s latest project\, an Midwest-Emmy nominated traveling concert series called Wish You Were Here is in its second season on PBS. She also has a weekly show\, ‘Live from the Home Farm\,’ that broadcasts on social media every Saturday night from her ranch. \nIn her 15 years as a touring musician\, she’s had the opportunity to collaborate with Billy Talbot of the band Crazy Horse\, Chuck Suchy\, Charlie Parr\, and Jami Lynn just to name a few. Other highlights include performances at SXSW\, Red Ants Pants\, CMJ\, and Sioux River Folk Fest and she had a song featured last year on NPR‘s prestigious All Songs Considered’s blog. \nAfter spending years on the road full-time\, Blue now lives and works on a cattle and sheep ranch with her husband and their two children.

SUMMARY:Bad Movie Night: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
DESCRIPTION:Grab your comfiest PJs and head on down to the Matthews Opera House on December 11 for our Bad Movie Night – Holiday Pajama Party! We will be watching the incredible (and incredibly bad) cult classic “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” in our historic theater. It’s going to be a blast! \nSuggested attendee age of 14 or older\, but all ages are permitted with parental discretion \nAbout “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians”\nMartian ruler Kimar (Leonard Hicks) is upset that the children of Mars are lazy and under the influence of too much pop culture from Earth. They are obsessed with the planet’s television programs and don’t want to do much of anything. In an attempt to get the kids peppy again\, Kimar orders the kidnapping of Santa Claus (John Call)\, hoping that the jolly old toymaker will know how to cheer the children up again. But two Earth children are also nabbed\, and this complicates things for Kimar. \n[arve url=”https://youtu.be/NyaJkLJK4gM” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Hank Harris and the Hegg Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy incredible music performed by South Dakota artists during Homegrown Sessions. This series will be ongoing\, so check back frequently for new concert announcements. \nPerforming next as part of our Homegrown Sessions will be Hank Harris and the Hegg Brothers. They will be joined by special guest Jimmy Goings. Enjoy an evening of acoustic folk with local musicians. This performance will be Friday\, October 29. Tickets are $20 adults\, $10 youth & BHSU students. General seating. A cash bar will be available \nHANK HARRIS\nMy musical journey performing in South Dakota has taken me at least a half a million miles through hundreds of towns\, stages large and small\, ballrooms\, opera houses\, libraries\, museums\, bars and eateries\, museums\, community theaters\, schools and cow pastures. From crowds of 15\,000 to intimate small settings. Thousands of people met\, though I can’t remember all their names. \nPlaying with South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands (DD and the Fayrohs\, Red Willow Band and R&B Supply)\, solo\, duos\, trios and an occasional 10-piece horn band has offered me a continuing musical education and opportunity to pursue a life of creating music. Many thanks to the fellow musicians and audiences that have made this possible. Through these journeys\, writing and chasing songs has been a common thread. By drawing from my road experience\, my work with the Adams Museum (Two CDs\, Deadwood Songbooks I and II)\, The South Dakota Railroad Museum (Currently researching and recording a CD collection of train songs)\,12 years as a part of SD Arts Council Touring Artist program\, and 40 years of writing my own songs\, in performance I tell the stories of how these songs come to life. Illuminating the tales of songwriters\, the historical context\, inspiration and the writing process itself. To tell the stories of the storytellers and their journeys\, and then play the songs and let them speak for themselves. It’s all about the story. And the stories are funny\, poignant\, enlightening\, heartfelt\, silly and span the wide and emotional landscape of the human experience. \nJONATHAN HEGG\nJonathon Hegg is the youngest of three musical sons whose parents were lifelong music educators. He graduated from Augustana College (now University) with a degree in musical performance. His joint efforts with his brother Jeremy began with Spooncat! and has moved into duets with him as well as numerous larger configurations. He has had the extreme pleasure to play what he refers to as second keyboard and background vocalist as well as being the mixing engineer of the albums made by Spooncat!\, Holiday Jam\, and anything Hegg Brothers related. He performs music for a living\, which began with his first of three years with A South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. Occasionally he arranges for various ensembles and teaches. \nJEREMY HEGG\nJeremy Hegg\, Music Director for Holiday Jam\, is the oldest son of two lifelong music educators\, grew up in Dell Rapids\, South Dakota\, and received his music degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He is the staff arranger and composer for the Augustana Brass Choir\, Sioux Falls Municipal Band\, and many marching band programs throughout the country. \nAs a performer\, Jeremy is known for his band Spooncat!\, which has performed throughout the region since 1996. He has performed around the country and throughout Europe with artists ranging from Smokey Robinson to Chuck Berry. In recent years\, he has been a featured guest pianist with South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. In 2008\, Jeremy started The Radio Specialists\, a group that includes several Holiday Jam members. Jeremy was also the 2003 recipient of the Mayor’s Award for the Performing Arts. \nJIMMY GOINGS\nOriginally from South Dakota\, Jimmy Goings is famous for being the lead singer and writer for Santa Esmeralda (now Generation Esmeralda) from 1977-1982. He has played with several South Dakota bands\, including Ma’s Boy & Wonderband which were both inducted into the South Dakota Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jimmy has worked with Hank since 1997 when they produced his album “World Beat Cowboy” which went on to win SD Album of the Year. They just finished their sixth Studio Album together. \nListen\n\nCOVID 19 Policies\nIn order to help ensure the safety of all audience members\, performers\, volunteers\, and staff members\, masks will be required during this event regardless of vaccination status.
