SUMMARY:Sierra Ferrell with Nick Shoulders
DESCRIPTION:This performance is SOLD OUT! \nThe Matthews Opera House & Arts Center\, along with Spread the Tunes\, Inc.\, are excited to announce that singer/songwriter Sierra Ferrell will be performing at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Thursday\, March 17 at 7:30 pm. She will be joined by country singer Nick Shoulders. \nWith her spellbinding voice and time-bending sensibilities\, Sierra Ferrell makes music that’s as fantastically vagabond as the artist herself. Growing up in small-town West Virginia\, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist left home in her early 20s to journey across the country with a troupe of nomadic musicians\, playing everywhere from truck stops to alleyways to freight-train boxcars speeding down the railroad tracks. After years of living in her van and busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle\, she moved to Nashville and soon landed a deal with Rounder Records on the strength of her magnetic live show. Now\, on her highly anticipated label debut Long Time Coming\, Ferrell shares a dozen songs beautifully unbound by genre or era\, instantly transporting her audience to an infinitely more enchanted world. \nCo-produced by Stu Hibberd and 10-time Grammy Award-winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss\, Dolly Parton\, Gillian Welch)\, Long Time Coming embodies a delicate eclecticism fitting for a musician who utterly defies categorization. “I want my music to be like my mind is — all over the place\,” says Ferrell\, who recorded the album at Southern Ground and Minutia studios in Nashville. “I listen to everything from bluegrass to techno to goth metal\, and it all inspires me in different ways that I try to incorporate into my songs and make people really feel something.” In sculpting the album’s chameleonic sound\, Ferrell joined forces with a knockout lineup of guest musicians (including Jerry Douglas\, Tim O’Brien\, Chris Scruggs\, Sarah Jarosz\, Billy Strings\, and Dennis Crouch)\, adding entirely new texture to each of her gracefully crafted and undeniably heartfelt songs. \nSprung from her self-described “country heart but a jazz mind\,” Long Time Coming opens on the unearthly reverie of “The Sea\,” a haunting and hypnotic tale of scorned love. Its bewitching arrangement is adorned with sublime details like Ferrell’s tender toy-piano melodies and Scruggs’s woozy steel-guitar work. In a striking sonic shift emblematic of the whole album\, Ferrell then veers into the galloping beat and classic bluegrass storytelling of “Jeremiah\,” a heavy-hearted but sweetly hopeful romp featuring Jarosz on banjo and octave mandolin. Another impossibly charming bluegrass gem\, “Bells of Every Chapel” sustains that wistful mood as Ferrell muses on the exquisite pain of “loving someone unconditionally with all your heart\, but they don’t receive your love the way you want them to.” Graced with Strings’s nimble acoustic-guitar work and the heavenly harmonies of O’Brien and Julie Lee\, “Bells of Every Chapel” reaches its breathtaking crescendo as Ferrell belts out the song’s closing lyrics\, effectively twisting that heartache into something strangely glorious. \n \nAbout Nick Shoulders \nWielding an ethereal croon and masterful whistle crafted from a lifetime chasing lizards through the Ozark hills\, Nick Shoulders is a living link to roots of country music with a penchant for the absurd. Combining his family’s deep ties to regional traditional singing with his years of playing to crowded street corners\, Nick has sought to forge a hybridized form of raucously clever country music; born of forgotten rocky hollers and bred to confront the tensions of the 21st century South. As evidenced by his surreal album art and anachronistic songwriting\, Nick’s creative output is steeped in the complicated history of his beloved home of rural Arkansas\, but crafted as a conscious rebuke of country music’s blind allegiance to historical seats of power and repression. With a kind word and a mean yodel\, Nick hopes to put the ‘Try’ in country. \nListen\n \nWatch\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDGaultyNIk” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MekiBNW142Y” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKO75S0K8K4″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Dr. David Wolff: "Finding our Past: Landmarks in Black Hills History"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, March 9 at noon as BHSU’s Dr. David Wolff presents Finding Our Past: Landmarks in Black Hills History. By using a number of images\, this presentation will visit sites around the Black Hills that can tell us about our past. Some of these places have historic markers\, while others are just anonymous features on the landscape. Either way\, area residents are probably familiar with them\, but not with the full stories behind the locations. Through tales of the gold rush\, past mining ventures\, violent moments\, and famous personalities\, this talk will connect the landmarks to our past. \nDr. Wolff is Professor Emeritus at Black Hills State University where he specializes in South Dakota and Black Hills history. Wolff received a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and has written three books: Industrializing the Rockies; Seth Bullock: Black Hills Lawman; and The Savior of Deadwood: James K.P. Miller on the Gold Frontier. Wolff serves on the Board of Trustees for the South Dakota State Historical Society and Deadwood’s Adams Museum & House. He has received a number of awards\, including the Mining History Association’s Rodman Paul Award for Outstanding Contributions to Mining History. \n  \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Mural Painting Session
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we’re inviting you to lend a hand in the creation of the George Martin Memorial Mural. A public painting session will be held on Saturday\, February 26 in the Matthews theater. Sections of the mural will be on display and ready for your brushwork! Come be a part of this larger-than-life\, paint-by-numbers mural project. \nBe sure to wear clothes that can get a little dirty and join us in the theater from 11 am until 3 pm. \nThe mural commemorates the legacy of George Martin\, a life-long citizen\, councilman\, and active Spearfish resident. Once completed\, it will take its place on the side of the Sears building\, facing Old City Hall Square in downtown Spearfish. \nThe concept and design of the work were developed by BHSU associate professor of art Desy Schoeneweis and a group of university students. It incorporates aspects of Martin’s life and personality with the feel of a game board\, with colorful and playful images greeting the viewer at every turn. Roaming across the display are illustrations of the Western Hills Humane Society\, the High Plains Western Heritage Center\, and the D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery and Archives\, all places that Martin held near and dear to his heart. \nWe invite you to put on your grubbies and join us for this exciting community project! SUMMARY:Right in the Eye
DESCRIPTION:If the imagination were to incarnate\, it would not be surprising if it took the form of cinematographer Georges Méliès. \nRight in the Eye is a live concert designed as a soundtrack to a montage of silent films by George Méliès (1861 – 1938) considered to be one of the inventors of cinematography.  It is the musical brainchild of Jean-François Alcoléa who has created a magical show where a multi-layered\, evocative and intricate score complements and interprets the otherwise silent films.  A trio of virtuoso musicians are almost a show in themselves\, as they conjure music from an extraordinary array of instruments: basics like piano\, percussion and guitar; fantastic oddities like the aquaphone (ocean harp)\, theremin and melodica; and mundane objects like stemware\, circular saws\, and even plastic take-out lids.  The mesmerizing score and panoply of unexpected sound expertly evokes the technical wizardry\, hilarity\, and stream of invention bequeathed to cinema by Méliès. \n“An exuberant mixed-media feast full of experimental verve.” – The Fountain\, Edinburgh Fringe Festival \n“A magical hour where films\, lighting and music weave a rich tapestry. A unique experience that goes way beyond merely watching very old movies.” – SG Fringe\, Edinburgh \n“It is at once inventive\, elegant\, and moving … right to the core!” – Chronique Festival Avignon \n[arve url=”https://youtu.be/fNIiLCmmD9E” /] \n

SUMMARY:Author Talks: Eliza Blue
DESCRIPTION:Author Talks take place in the Matthews Fireplace Room every Tuesday at 12:30. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, February 15 at 12:30 pm for our next makeSPACE at the Matthews Author Talk with Eliza Blue. When Eliza Blue first moved to northwestern South Dakota\, she didn’t plan on staying long. After all\, the singer/songwriter had spent most of her adulthood hopping from place to place. But then she fell in love with a Perkins County rancher — and the land\, the wind\, the livestock and the giant blue expanse of a West River sky. In her book Accidental Rancher\, Blue shares a collection of these writings\, bringing a new voice and a musician’s grace to the culture of rural America. \nWe will also be broadcasting Author Talks on ZOOM for those who prefer attending virtually. \nZoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/3793973264?pwd=MTIvWkl3cWxCMjBzR0g0T2REbmNsZz09 \nMeeting ID: 379 397 3264 \nPasscode: MOH-7973 \nAbout the Author\nEliza Blue is a shepherd\, folk musician\, and writer residing in western South Dakota. She writes a weekly column\, Little Pasture on the Prairie\, that is carried by 17 different print publications\, writes and produces audio “postcards” from her ranch for South Dakota Public Broadcasting and Prairie Public Radio\, and just released her first book\, Accidental Rancher. Her writing has also been featured in The Guardian and the New York Times\, and she is regular columnist for The Daily Yonder\, a national publication for and about rural people. Blue’s latest project\, an Midwest-Emmy nominated traveling concert series called Wish You Were Here is in its second season on PBS. She also has a weekly show\, ‘Live from the Home Farm\,’ that broadcasts on social media every Saturday night from her ranch. \nIn her 15 years as a touring musician\, she’s had the opportunity to collaborate with Billy Talbot of the band Crazy Horse\, Chuck Suchy\, Charlie Parr\, and Jami Lynn just to name a few. Other highlights include performances at SXSW\, Red Ants Pants\, CMJ\, and Sioux River Folk Fest and she had a song featured last year on NPR‘s prestigious All Songs Considered’s blog. \nAfter spending years on the road full-time\, Blue now lives and works on a cattle and sheep ranch with her husband and their two children.
