Hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nA reception for this exhibit will be Friday\, March 11 from 5 pm – 6 pm and will feature a poetry reading and Q&A time with the author. Author Talks will take place in the Matthews Fireplace Room. \n  \nAbout the Author\nJean Helmer writes flash memoir and poetry. Her topics center on ranch life\, on dealing with radioactivity\, on experiences in a one-room country school\, and on nature. She will read “Prom Night\,” published in Oakwood\, 2019. \nKathy Bjornestad is a newly retired children’s librarian who has been writing most of her life. She has experimented with poetry\, essay\, short story\, adult historical romance\, and young adult and middle-grade fiction. She has been a finalist in the Colorado gold Writing Contest and in the Pikes Peak Writing Contest\, is a Wyoming Fellowship for Creative Fiction recipient\, and received an honorable mention for Wyoming’s Neltje Blanchan Award. One of her short stories appeared as first place winner in a Scribes Valley anthology called “Escape Your World.” She has also been published in Christian Science Monitor’s “Home Forum” and placed multiple times in the Wyoming Writers Annual contest. She currently enjoys membership in Bear Lodge Writers\, Wyoming Writers (past president)\, Northern Colorado Writers and the Belle Fourche Writers Group. \nMargaret “Margie” Bolte is recently retired from the US Public Health Service as a Commissioned Officer and held positions of Safety and Health Officer and Public Health Educator. Some of her writing reflects growing up in a small town in southern Colorado in the 1960s and 1970s. For her\, writing began when she took part in local writing classes and attending the Belle Fourche Writing group. The practice revealed to her the many memories she has of her childhood and young adulthood which she did not know even existed. Using words to tell her story has been gratifying. \nDr. Meg English is a recently retired language arts teacher. She and her husband John have two grown sons and six grandchildren. Her activities include golf\, yoga\, painting\, drawing and volunteer work for the Northern Hills CASA program. Meg teaches community education classes in writing and facilitates the Belle Fourche Writers Group. While she has written essays and poetry\, Meg’s current interest is fiction. She writes to make sense of life and its opportunities\, relationships\, politics and workplace events. Stories bring context to our lives and help to explain events and emotions that are sometimes difficult to understand. Meg’s work can be found in various publications. \nEric Beeman is a retired electronics technician whose experience included maintaining radar equipment for an Air force government contractor in Colony\, Wyoming. He’s always enjoyed a good fiction book or movie and that\, he says\, is why he likes to dream up stories. Eric has learned how to put his stories to paper and is currently learning how to be more observant of details.

SUMMARY:Artist Workshops: Linoleum Block Printing
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center gallery for our free artist workshops! Twice a month we will offer classes led by practicing artists in a variety of media. Each workshop is a three-hour session in which you will get hands-on experience in crafting your own masterpiece.\n\nOn Thursday\, March 24\, we will feature Mary Baker\, teaching the art of linoleum block printing. Future workshops include instruction on embroidery (4/14)\, simple bookmaking and printing (4/28)\, comics and animation (5/12)\, leather-bound journals (5/26)\, and sewing (6/9).\n\nThese events are free\, however\, we always encourage a “pay as you can” donation to help offset the cost of supplies.\n\nThese workshops are a makeSPACE at the Matthews event\, made possible by the South Dakota Arts Council.\n\nSpace is limited. In her latest book “Just Fine\, Thank You\,” Leite explores the jumble of feelings and emotions she experienced in her early years in a closed family. She describes what it does to a young girl when the family doesn’t talk about a father who stays late at the local bar and a mother who expects her daughter to be a perfect young lady without explaining what that involves. She also shares what it does to a young child in a “no-talk’’ family as she tries to make sense of sometimes crazy\, senseless behavior from people she loves. \n“Just Fine\, Thank You” is one of four books in a series titled Blood\, Sex and Tears. She says of the series\, “It’s my desire that you can find hope for yourself or a loved one based on my story of redemption.’’ \nLeite has had a successful\, 35-year career as a professional counselor and author whose focus is on drug and alcohol problems and mental health issues. Among her best-known works are “Women: What Do We Want?” and “A Fix for the Family Rift Caused by Addiction.” She is a graduate of Black Hills State University with a composite major in Social Science. She holds a master’s degree from Oklahoma University and has presented addiction and mental health workshops in Oregon\, Texas\, Minneapolis\, Montana\, Colorado and Arizona. She has also held frequent workshops on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and is currently conducting workshops for the Miskwaki Tribe in Tama\, Iowa. She is the author of 14 published works including manuals for The Family Restoration Program and many newspaper and magazine articles. She will be joined by country singer Nick Shoulders. \nWith her spellbinding voice and time-bending sensibilities\, Sierra Ferrell makes music that’s as fantastically vagabond as the artist herself. Growing up in small-town West Virginia\, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist left home in her early 20s to journey across the country with a troupe of nomadic musicians\, playing everywhere from truck stops to alleyways to freight-train boxcars speeding down the railroad tracks. After years of living in her van and busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle\, she moved to Nashville and soon landed a deal with Rounder Records on the strength of her magnetic live show. SUMMARY:"The Chair is Not Me" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“The Chair is Not Me” exhibition features poems and art from the book\, “The Chair is Not Me\,” written by “JJ” James Janis. This book is a collection of poems about his life experiences and challenges as a diversely abled individual. Mr. Janis originally composed twenty-one poems\, eleven of which have been illustrated by artists of diverse abilities and cultures.  The collection of poetry seeks to advocate for individuals with diverse abilities through the exploration of disabilities and the culture surrounding disabilities\, the human condition\, life on Pine Ridge\, and communication. \nArt can be viewed March 2 – 31 in the Matthews Opera House gallery. Hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 10 am – 5 pm. \nA reception for this exhibit will be Friday\, March 11 from 5 pm – 6 pm and will feature a poetry reading and Q&A time with the author. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available. \nThe themes explored by the poetry and art featuring in this exhibit include: \n\nSociety’s perception of diversely abled individuals and diverse cultures.\nNecessary assistive devices and processes that assist\, but also unintentionally diminish.\nThe impacts of labeling.\nThe lasting effects of genocide on a society.\nPerception of the world through a child’s eyes and imagination.\nThe joy of freedom.\nCommunication and the importance of one-on-one interactions.\nThe humor found in the duality of human kind’s predispositions.\nIdentity.\nNomadic qualities of an individual with disabilities.\nThe acceptance and normalization of individuals with disabilities.\nForgiveness of past transgressions.

SUMMARY:Artist Workshops: Cardboard Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center gallery for our free artist workshops! Twice a month we will offer classes led by practicing artists in a variety of media. Each workshop is a three-hour session in which you will get hands-on experience in crafting your own masterpiece.\n\nOn Thursday\, March 10\, we will feature Mary Baker\, teaching the art of printmaking with cardboard. Future workshops include instruction on linoleum block printing (3/24)\, embroidery (4/14)\, simple bookmaking and printing (4/28)\, comics and animation (5/12)\, leather-bound journals (5/26)\, and sewing (6/9).\n\nThese events are free\, however\, we always encourage a “pay as you can” donation to help offset the cost of supplies.\n\nThese workshops are a makeSPACE at the Matthews event\, made possible by the South Dakota Arts Council.\n\nSpace is limited. SUMMARY:Dr. David Wolff: "Finding our Past: Landmarks in Black Hills History"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, March 9 at noon as BHSU’s Dr. David Wolff presents Finding Our Past: Landmarks in Black Hills History. By using a number of images\, this presentation will visit sites around the Black Hills that can tell us about our past. Some of these places have historic markers\, while others are just anonymous features on the landscape. Either way\, area residents are probably familiar with them\, but not with the full stories behind the locations. Through tales of the gold rush\, past mining ventures\, violent moments\, and famous personalities\, this talk will connect the landmarks to our past. \nDr. Wolff is Professor Emeritus at Black Hills State University where he specializes in South Dakota and Black Hills history. Wolff received a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and has written three books: Industrializing the Rockies; Seth Bullock: Black Hills Lawman; and The Savior of Deadwood: James K.P. Miller on the Gold Frontier. Wolff serves on the Board of Trustees for the South Dakota State Historical Society and Deadwood’s Adams Museum & House. He has received a number of awards\, including the Mining History Association’s Rodman Paul Award for Outstanding Contributions to Mining History. \n  \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n  \n
