SUMMARY:Auditions: Page to Stage
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Matthews Opera House for auditions for our new community theater experiment\, “Page to Stage!” This unique reader’s theater production will offer opportunities for actors to read from four different scripts and is a perfect opportunity for those new to the stage\, seasoned actors who are short on time but long on ambition\, and anyone who would like to participate in a relaxed\, creative theater experience. \n“Page to Stage” will feature four plays: “Love\, Loss\, and What I Wore\,” directed by Julie Walkins; “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” directed by Joanna Mechaley; “A Gap in Generations\,” directed by Max Merchen; and a new play written and directed by local playwright Charlotte Dougherty\, “I Know What You Did.” Each play is a full-length script. Due to its nature as a Reader’s Theater\, however\, actors will not face the typical rigorous requirements–the rehearsal period will be brief\, there will be minimal movement and no memorization required! \nEach play will perform on scheduled weekends throughout the month of May. \nAuditions will be held simultaneously and community members are invited to try out for one or more of the four productions.  \n“Love\, Loss and What I Wore\,” written by Nora and Delilah Ephron and adapted from the memoir  of the same name by Ilene Beckerman\, will be directed by long-time Matthews thespian\, Julie Walkins. This funny\, compelling script is an intimate collection of stories about women\, clothes and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers\, prom dresses\, mothers\, buying bras\, mothers\, hating purses and why we only wear black. \nJoanna Mechaley will direct “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” by Paul Zindel. This play focuses on a frowzy\, acid-tongued mother who wreaks petty vengeance on everyone around her\, including her two daughters. But her youngest daughter exhibits an intuitive gift for science\, and proves that something beautiful and full of promise can emerge from even the most barren\, afflicted soil. \nOnce again proving that laughter is the best medicine\, Max Merchen will direct “A Gap in Generations\,” by Jerry Blunt. This comedic-farce explodes with belly-laughs as the readers discover a square in old Bologna peopled by types that could have strayed from any of Shakespeare’s classic tales. \nIn addition to nationally published scripts\, “Page to Stage” will also feature the work of a local playwright\, “Dark Secrets\,” written and directed by C.A. Dougherty. In Dougherty’s newest play\, two sisters with a bad case of sibling rivalry find themselves faced with unexpected and sometimes hilarious consequences\, trying to test out the theory that everyone has at least one secret that they don’t want anyone to know. Ever!

She will read “Prom Night\,” published in Oakwood\, 2019. \nKathy Bjornestad is a newly retired children’s librarian who has been writing most of her life. She has experimented with poetry\, essay\, short story\, adult historical romance\, and young adult and middle-grade fiction. She has been a finalist in the Colorado gold Writing Contest and in the Pikes Peak Writing Contest\, is a Wyoming Fellowship for Creative Fiction recipient\, and received an honorable mention for Wyoming’s Neltje Blanchan Award. One of her short stories appeared as first place winner in a Scribes Valley anthology called “Escape Your World.” She has also been published in Christian Science Monitor’s “Home Forum” and placed multiple times in the Wyoming Writers Annual contest. She currently enjoys membership in Bear Lodge Writers\, Wyoming Writers (past president)\, Northern Colorado Writers and the Belle Fourche Writers Group. \nMargaret “Margie” Bolte is recently retired from the US Public Health Service as a Commissioned Officer and held positions of Safety and Health Officer and Public Health Educator. Some of her writing reflects growing up in a small town in southern Colorado in the 1960s and 1970s. For her\, writing began when she took part in local writing classes and attending the Belle Fourche Writing group. The practice revealed to her the many memories she has of her childhood and young adulthood which she did not know even existed. Using words to tell her story has been gratifying. \nDr. Meg English is a recently retired language arts teacher. She and her husband John have two grown sons and six grandchildren. Her activities include golf\, yoga\, painting\, drawing and volunteer work for the Northern Hills CASA program. Meg teaches community education classes in writing and facilitates the Belle Fourche Writers Group. While she has written essays and poetry\, Meg’s current interest is fiction. She writes to make sense of life and its opportunities\, relationships\, politics and workplace events. Stories bring context to our lives and help to explain events and emotions that are sometimes difficult to understand. Meg’s work can be found in various publications. \nEric Beeman is a retired electronics technician whose experience included maintaining radar equipment for an Air force government contractor in Colony\, Wyoming. He’s always enjoyed a good fiction book or movie and that\, he says\, is why he likes to dream up stories. Eric has learned how to put his stories to paper and is currently learning how to be more observant of details.

SUMMARY:Author Talks: Evelyn Leite
DESCRIPTION:Author Talks take place in the Matthews Fireplace Room every Tuesday at 12:30. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, March 22 at 12:30 pm for our next makeSPACE at the Matthews Author Talk with Evelyn Leite. Author Talks will take place in the Matthews Fireplace Room. \nWe will also be broadcasting Author Talks on ZOOM for those who prefer attending virtually. \nZoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/3793973264?pwd=MTIvWkl3cWxCMjBzR0g0T2REbmNsZz09 \nMeeting ID: 379 397 3264 \nPasscode: MOH-7973 \nAbout the Author\nChildren in families that keep secrets learn early in life to project a brave front\, to avoid letting the outside world peek behind the mask\, to cope alone with feelings of guilt\, anger\, fear and confusion. \nRapid City counselor and author Evelyn Leite grew up in such a family\, struggling to understand her emotions\, uncertain how she could love her parents and siblings so deeply but hate their words and actions. In her latest book “Just Fine\, Thank You\,” Leite explores the jumble of feelings and emotions she experienced in her early years in a closed family. She describes what it does to a young girl when the family doesn’t talk about a father who stays late at the local bar and a mother who expects her daughter to be a perfect young lady without explaining what that involves. She also shares what it does to a young child in a “no-talk’’ family as she tries to make sense of sometimes crazy\, senseless behavior from people she loves. \n“Just Fine\, Thank You” is one of four books in a series titled Blood\, Sex and Tears. She says of the series\, “It’s my desire that you can find hope for yourself or a loved one based on my story of redemption.’’ \nLeite has had a successful\, 35-year career as a professional counselor and author whose focus is on drug and alcohol problems and mental health issues. Among her best-known works are “Women: What Do We Want?” and “A Fix for the Family Rift Caused by Addiction.” She is a graduate of Black Hills State University with a composite major in Social Science. She holds a master’s degree from Oklahoma University and has presented addiction and mental health workshops in Oregon\, Texas\, Minneapolis\, Montana\, Colorado and Arizona. She has also held frequent workshops on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and is currently conducting workshops for the Miskwaki Tribe in Tama\, Iowa. She is the author of 14 published works including manuals for The Family Restoration Program and many newspaper and magazine articles. She’s a 2008 inductee into the South Dakota Hall of Fame. \nAre you interested in presenting an Author Talk? Contact us at 605-717-6967 or engage@matthewsopera.com

SUMMARY:Sierra Ferrell with Nick Shoulders
DESCRIPTION:This performance is SOLD OUT! \nThe Matthews Opera House & Arts Center\, along with Spread the Tunes\, Inc.\, are excited to announce that singer/songwriter Sierra Ferrell will be performing at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Thursday\, March 17 at 7:30 pm. She will be joined by country singer Nick Shoulders. \nWith her spellbinding voice and time-bending sensibilities\, Sierra Ferrell makes music that’s as fantastically vagabond as the artist herself. Growing up in small-town West Virginia\, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist left home in her early 20s to journey across the country with a troupe of nomadic musicians\, playing everywhere from truck stops to alleyways to freight-train boxcars speeding down the railroad tracks. After years of living in her van and busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle\, she moved to Nashville and soon landed a deal with Rounder Records on the strength of her magnetic live show. Now\, on her highly anticipated label debut Long Time Coming\, Ferrell shares a dozen songs beautifully unbound by genre or era\, instantly transporting her audience to an infinitely more enchanted world. \nCo-produced by Stu Hibberd and 10-time Grammy Award-winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss\, Dolly Parton\, Gillian Welch)\, Long Time Coming embodies a delicate eclecticism fitting for a musician who utterly defies categorization. “I want my music to be like my mind is — all over the place\,” says Ferrell\, who recorded the album at Southern Ground and Minutia studios in Nashville. “I listen to everything from bluegrass to techno to goth metal\, and it all inspires me in different ways that I try to incorporate into my songs and make people really feel something.” In sculpting the album’s chameleonic sound\, Ferrell joined forces with a knockout lineup of guest musicians (including Jerry Douglas\, Tim O’Brien\, Chris Scruggs\, Sarah Jarosz\, Billy Strings\, and Dennis Crouch)\, adding entirely new texture to each of her gracefully crafted and undeniably heartfelt songs. \nSprung from her self-described “country heart but a jazz mind\,” Long Time Coming opens on the unearthly reverie of “The Sea\,” a haunting and hypnotic tale of scorned love. Its bewitching arrangement is adorned with sublime details like Ferrell’s tender toy-piano melodies and Scruggs’s woozy steel-guitar work. In a striking sonic shift emblematic of the whole album\, Ferrell then veers into the galloping beat and classic bluegrass storytelling of “Jeremiah\,” a heavy-hearted but sweetly hopeful romp featuring Jarosz on banjo and octave mandolin. Another impossibly charming bluegrass gem\, “Bells of Every Chapel” sustains that wistful mood as Ferrell muses on the exquisite pain of “loving someone unconditionally with all your heart\, but they don’t receive your love the way you want them to.” Graced with Strings’s nimble acoustic-guitar work and the heavenly harmonies of O’Brien and Julie Lee\, “Bells of Every Chapel” reaches its breathtaking crescendo as Ferrell belts out the song’s closing lyrics\, effectively twisting that heartache into something strangely glorious. \n \nAbout Nick Shoulders \nWielding an ethereal croon and masterful whistle crafted from a lifetime chasing lizards through the Ozark hills\, Nick Shoulders is a living link to roots of country music with a penchant for the absurd. Combining his family’s deep ties to regional traditional singing with his years of playing to crowded street corners\, Nick has sought to forge a hybridized form of raucously clever country music; born of forgotten rocky hollers and bred to confront the tensions of the 21st century South. As evidenced by his surreal album art and anachronistic songwriting\, Nick’s creative output is steeped in the complicated history of his beloved home of rural Arkansas\, but crafted as a conscious rebuke of country music’s blind allegiance to historical seats of power and repression. With a kind word and a mean yodel\, Nick hopes to put the ‘Try’ in country. \nListen\n \nWatch\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDGaultyNIk” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MekiBNW142Y” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKO75S0K8K4″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /]
