Terrible\, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of Game of Thrones and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy\, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras\, you win or you die. Produced by special arrangement with PLAYSCRIPTS of New York\, NY   \n  \n“Laffin School” | Group B | Actors in grades 2-6 (entering these grades in Fall 2022) Jokes! Jokes! Jokes! It’s the classic situation. A young substitute teacher\, Miss Quackenbush\, turns up at the Little Red Schoolhouse and finds her class is comprised of the dumbest (and funniest) pupils found anywhere. The previous teacher had a nervous breakdown. No wonder! With things like mice in lunch boxes and a student with the measles\, anything more will drive you crazy! Unless the likable but dim-bulbed pupils can pass a simple exam\, they won’t advance to the next grade. Find out why the pupils don’t want to be “promoted” and why Miss Quackenbush has to find some way to get rid of them! SUMMARY:Sicard Hollow
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center\, along with Spread the Tunes\, Inc.\, are excited to announce that bluegrass band Sicard Hollow will be performing at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Saturday\, April 16 at 7:30 pm. \n \nSicard Hollow is a four-piece progressive bluegrass band who formed with a mutual passion for pushing the boundaries of genre. Heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead and New Grass Revival\, these young pickers bring new energy to a timeless style with a combination of fearless improvisation and instrumental prowess. \nThe band formed through mutual connections within the Nashville music scene who all wanted to play something different. They were all simultaneously discovering bluegrass while existing in their other scenes. Once they got together\, the rest was history. \nHaving toured extensively around the country since 2018\, this group of players continues to grow their sound with every performance. With the release of their debut studio album\, ‘Secret of the Breeze’ (2020)\, a live album called ‘Live at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville’ (2021)\, and their upcoming sophomore studio effort\, there is no slowing down for Sicard Hollow. \n\nListen\nhttp://

SUMMARY:Alex Portal: Award-Winning Cartoonist and Illustrator
DESCRIPTION:Alex Portal was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He grew up watching and loving everything related to cartoons and comic books. As a kid\, Alex would spend hours scribbling away on pretty much any blank surface he could find. After high school\, Alex worked odd jobs while continuing his self-guided studies of cartooning and working towards finding his big break. While living in North Carolina\, Alex met his wife Rachel and after graduating with a master’s degree in public history\, Rachel accepted a position with Deadwood History Inc. and the two moved to South Dakota. \nShortly after arriving\, Alex started working with the Black Hills Pioneer newspaper as a freelance editorial cartoonist. Alex gained some measure of note in the community\, and to date has won several awards for his cartoons including “Best Original Editorial Cartoon” from the South Dakota Newspaper Association\, and illustrated several children’s books written by local authors – including three books in the “But Nana…” series\, and “Grandpa’s White Cane.” \nAlex currently lives in Lead with Rachel and their two cats\, Maggie and Bumble. He serves as a reporter and inhouse cartoonist for the Black Hills Pioneer\, and is working on a fourth “But Nana…” book. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Auditions: Page to Stage
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Matthews Opera House for auditions for our new community theater experiment\, “Page to Stage!” This unique reader’s theater production will offer opportunities for actors to read from four different scripts and is a perfect opportunity for those new to the stage\, seasoned actors who are short on time but long on ambition\, and anyone who would like to participate in a relaxed\, creative theater experience. \n“Page to Stage” will feature four plays: “Love\, Loss\, and What I Wore\,” directed by Julie Walkins; “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” directed by Joanna Mechaley; “A Gap in Generations\,” directed by Max Merchen; and a new play written and directed by local playwright Charlotte Dougherty\, “I Know What You Did.” Each play is a full-length script. Due to its nature as a Reader’s Theater\, however\, actors will not face the typical rigorous requirements–the rehearsal period will be brief\, there will be minimal movement and no memorization required! \nEach play will perform on scheduled weekends throughout the month of May. \nAuditions will be held simultaneously and community members are invited to try out for one or more of the four productions.  \n“Love\, Loss and What I Wore\,” written by Nora and Delilah Ephron and adapted from the memoir  of the same name by Ilene Beckerman\, will be directed by long-time Matthews thespian\, Julie Walkins. This funny\, compelling script is an intimate collection of stories about women\, clothes and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers\, prom dresses\, mothers\, buying bras\, mothers\, hating purses and why we only wear black. \nJoanna Mechaley will direct “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” by Paul Zindel. This play focuses on a frowzy\, acid-tongued mother who wreaks petty vengeance on everyone around her\, including her two daughters. But her youngest daughter exhibits an intuitive gift for science\, and proves that something beautiful and full of promise can emerge from even the most barren\, afflicted soil. \nOnce again proving that laughter is the best medicine\, Max Merchen will direct “A Gap in Generations\,” by Jerry Blunt. This comedic-farce explodes with belly-laughs as the readers discover a square in old Bologna peopled by types that could have strayed from any of Shakespeare’s classic tales. \nIn addition to nationally published scripts\, “Page to Stage” will also feature the work of a local playwright\, “Dark Secrets\,” written and directed by C.A. Dougherty. In Dougherty’s newest play\, two sisters with a bad case of sibling rivalry find themselves faced with unexpected and sometimes hilarious consequences\, trying to test out the theory that everyone has at least one secret that they don’t want anyone to know. Ever!
