SUMMARY:Laffin School
DESCRIPTION:The Froelich Young Actors Guild presents a special double feature event: “Game of Tiaras\,” a comedy by Don Zolidis and “Laffin School\,” a comedy by Keith Jackson! Both shows will be performed on Saturday\, June 25 at 7 pm and Sunday\, June 26 at 2 pm. One ticket gains access to both plays. \nAbout the Shows\n“Game of Tiaras” by Don Zolidis\nActors in grades 7-12 \nWhen the aging king of a Magical Kingdom (England) decides to split his empire between his three daughters\, Cinderella\, Belle\, and the Snow Queen (who in no way resembles a copyrighted character)\, terrible tragedy ensues. Terrible\, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of Game of Thrones and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy\, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras\, you win or you die. \nProduced by special arrangement with PLAYSCRIPTS of New York\, NY \n“Laffin School” by Keith Jackson\nActors in grades 2-6 \nJokes! Jokes! Jokes! It’s the classic situation. A young substitute teacher\, Miss Quackenbush\, turns up at the Little Red Schoolhouse and finds her class is comprised of the dumbest (and funniest) pupils found anywhere. The previous teacher had a nervous breakdown. No wonder! With things like mice in lunch boxes and a student with the measles\, anything more will drive you crazy! Unless the likable but dim-bulbed pupils can pass a simple exam\, they won’t advance to the next grade. Find out why the pupils don’t want to be “promoted” and why Miss Quackenbush has to find some way to get rid of them! \nProduced by special arrangement with PIONEER DRAMA SERVICE\, INC. of Englewood\, CO \n

SUMMARY:The Resonant Rogues: CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Cory Marie Podielski\nWe are so sorry to announce that tonight’s live music with The Resonant Rogues has been cancelled due to travel issues. We wish the band a speedy fix so they can get back on the highways and byways! Our apologies for any inconvenience–Advance ticket holders will be contacted by Matthews staff. \nFolk duo The Resonant Rogues will perform at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Saturday\, June 18 at 7:30 pm. \nThe Resonant Rogues’ dark Appalachian folk paints a picture of their lives in the mountains of Western North Carolina and on the road. Anchored by the songwriting duo of Sparrow (banjo\, accordion) and Keith Josiah Smith (guitar)\, the duo has traveled the byways and highways of America and crossed the oceans with instruments in tow. From riding freight trains to building their own homestead\, the pair are no strangers to blazing unconventional trails. At once rooted and adventurous\, each song tells a story of real experiences\, friendships\, and challenges. \n\nAbout the musicians\nSparrow\nSongwriter\, accordion\, banjo\, vocals \nSparrow’s passion for movement and sound started early\, with much time and energy spent on choir\, orchestra\, musical theatre\, swing dancing\, and figure skating. A voracious student\, she has immersed herself in an enormous range of performance arts. Sparrow plays old-fashioned originals with The Resonant Rogues and also leads a traditional jazz band called Sparrow and her Wingmen. She also occasionally performs as a solo artist and released an album of her original music in 2012. Her instruments include accordion\, banjo\, and fiddle. She has been belly dancing since 2003\, teaching and performing in Asheville and around the country. In 2006-2007\, Sparrow attended the Circus Center in San Francisco\, primarily for acrobatics\, and has toured and performed with Asheville’s Runaway Circus. \n  \nKeith Josiah Smith\nSongwriter\, guitar\, vocals \nSmith’s musical journey began with playing drums in punk/rock bands in his early teens. He then developed a passion for songwriting upon learning his first chords on the guitar and hosted open mics and a community music festival in his hometown of Menomonie\, WI. In the spring of ’09\, at the age of 18\, he left home and began traveling around the USA\, hopping freight trains and street performing for a living. In 2010\, he traveled to Nashville\, TN with hometown friend Jason Dea West (Intuitive Compass) and formed Barefoot Surrender with Benjamin Tod (Lost Dog Street Band). In the ensuing years\, he accompanied many other street bands between the Pacific Northwest and New Orleans\, LA. In 2012\, he gained a renewed focus on songwriting and studying the guitar\, which led him to record a demo in Seattle\, WA. With that new demo in hand\, he spent the next 10 days traveling across the country via freight train\, visiting musician friends along the way and landing in Asheville\, NC\, where he serendipitously met a woman named Sparrow who needed a guitarist for her recording session in three days. They formed Resonant Rogues in 2013\, and Keith’s adventurous spirit is now satisfied with touring around the world with his wife\, Sparrow. \n“I urge you to get out and hear them” -Lonesome Highway \n“Their intense cohesion is so intertwined that it feels like they’re playing with one pair of hands.” –No Depression \nListen…\nhttp:// \n

SUMMARY:Author Talks: Troy Dobyns
DESCRIPTION:Author Talks take place in the Matthews Fireplace Room every Tuesday at 12:30. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, May 31 at 12:30 pm for our next makeSPACE at the Matthews Author Talk with Troy Dobyns. \nAbout the Author\nAt two weeks old\, Troy started traveling with his family due to his father’s Naval career. He and his family lived in many places but always came home to the Black Hills for vacations. When their father retired\, they knew this would be their permanent home. \nIn the spring of 1972\, the family moved to Rapid City just in time to live through the Rapid City flood. Troy’s story is intertwined with several others from the maternal side of his family who also fought the waters of that horrible night in June 1972. These stories are revealed through several accounts of the family but mostly through the eyes of the then-eight-year-old author. The story covers the day of the flood\, the night of the flood\, survivorship\, the aftermath\, and the recovery. \nAre you interested in presenting an Author Talk? Contact us at 605-717-6967 or engage@matthewsopera.com

SUMMARY:Dark Secrets
DESCRIPTION:The finale performance of the 2022 Page-to-Stage series “Dark Secrets\,” or (“I Know What You Did”)\, is written and directed by local playwright C.A. Dougherty. In Dougherty’s newest play\, two sisters with a bad case of sibling rivalry find themselves faced with unexpected and sometimes hilarious consequences\, trying to test out the theory that everyone has at least one secret that they don’t want anyone to know. \nReader’s theater is a unique experience for audiences. In a typical theater experience\, the audience is invited into the scene; but during a reader’s theater production the audience is invited into the story. Stripping a script to its barest bones–the dialogue–really pushes both actors and directors to focus their energy on developing rich characters that keep the plot moving forward without reliance on props and sets. This undertaking emphasizes the power of the words. \nEach show will be followed by a meet and greet with the cast\, providing the audience with a unique opportunity to socialize with the performers and crew. Coffee and cookies will be provided. \n“Page to Stage: A Readers Theater Experience” will run at the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center every weekend in May with performances on Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Admission is $5 at the door.

Produced by special arrangement with PLAYSCRIPTS of New York\, NY   \n  \n“Laffin School” | Group B | Actors in grades 2-6 (entering these grades in Fall 2022) Jokes! Jokes! Produced by special arrangement with PIONEER DRAMA SERVICE\, INC. of Englewood\, CO

SUMMARY:A Gap in Generations
DESCRIPTION:Once again proving that laughter is the best medicine\, Max Merchen will direct “A Gap in Generations\,” by Jerry Blunt\, continuing the Page-to-Stage series. This comedic-farce explodes with belly-laughs as the readers discover a square in old Bologna peopled by types that could have strayed from any of Shakespeare’s classic tales. SUMMARY:CANCELED: Author Talks: Doug Hoff
DESCRIPTION:We regret that this week’s Author Talks with Doug Hoff has been canceled. We hope to reschedule at a later date. \nAuthor Talks take place in the Matthews Fireplace Room every Tuesday at 12:30. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, May 17 at 12:30 pm for our next makeSPACE at the Matthews Author Talk with Doug Hoff. Author Talks will take place in the Matthews Fireplace Room. \nWe will also be broadcasting Author Talks on ZOOM for those who prefer attending virtually. \nAbout the Author\nDouglas Henry Hoff was born in 1948 and graduated as valedictorian of his high school class in 1966. He attended and was an honor student at Black Hills State University and the SD School of Mines and Technology. He and Marlene (Molly) were married in 1968 while attending SDSMT. When his parents considered the sale of the family farm Doug and Molly decided to give ranching a try and later bought the farm\, which they eventually tripled in size. While there they started a herd of world-renowned registered Angus cattle\, a cattle genetics and research company that they later sold to Cargill\, and had two children\, Brian and Andrea. \nWhile ranching Doug received The National Ralston Purina Youth of the Year award\, The SD Young Farmer of the Year award\, The North American Beef Improvement Federation Seedstock Producer of the Year award\, and The 2000 US Livestock Man of the Year award. He graduated from the SD Agriculture and Rural Development program. He and Molly enjoyed and lived a robust ranching career\, selling semen\, embryos\, and cattle around the globe\, with cattle from their cowherd dispersal going to five continents. Doug brought his expertise and in-depth agricultural experience to this book\, helping to produce a unique perspective of the demands of agriculture and living on the prairie. \nAre you interested in presenting an Author Talk? SUMMARY:The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds
DESCRIPTION:The Page-to-Stage reader’s theater series continues with “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” written by Paul Zindel and directed by Joanna Mechaley. This play focuses on a frowzy\, acid-tongued mother who wreaks petty vengeance on everyone around her\, including her two daughters. SUMMARY:Artist Workshops: Comics and Animation
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center gallery for our free artist workshops! Twice a month we will offer classes led by practicing artists in a variety of media. Each workshop is a three-hour session in which you will get hands-on experience in crafting your own masterpiece.\n\nOn Thursday\, May 12\, we will feature Maxwell Green\, teaching the art of comics and animation. In this workshop\, participants will participate in a variety of fun activities focused on both comics and animation. For comics\, the focus will be on character creation strategies\, storytelling\, and sequencing our comics. Animation activities will build off of what was learned with comics\, working towards things like flipbooks and other traditional\, hands-on techniques. By the end of the session\, students will have completed a short comic\, flipbooks\, multiple drawings from activities\, and more!\n\nFuture workshops include instruction on leather-bound journals (5/26)\, and sewing (6/9).\n\nThese events are free\, however\, we always encourage a “pay as you can” donation to help offset the cost of supplies.\n\nThese workshops are a makeSPACE at the Matthews event\, made possible by the South Dakota Arts Council.\n\nSpace is limited. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n  \n
