SUMMARY:JAMuary - Taylor Scott Band

SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: Dancing at Lughnasa
DESCRIPTION:December 22nd & 23rd @ 6:00pm \nThe Matthews Opera House invites community actors to audition for Dancing at Lughnasa\, Brian Friel’s poignant\, memory-rich drama set in 1930s rural Ireland. We’re seeking performers of all experience levels to bring this moving story of sisterhood\, resilience\, and fleeting joy to life. \nNo experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \nDancing at Lughnasa – Directed by Shirlene Joseph \nDancing at Lughnasa follows five unmarried sisters living a modest life in rural Ireland in 1936\, as remembered by the now-grown son of one of the women. During the summer of the Lughnasa festival\, their world is shaken by small but powerful events—the arrival of a new radio\, the return of their long-absent missionary uncle\, and the unexpected visit of the boy’s charming father. These moments of music\, memory\, and brief joy ultimately reveal the fractures that will change the family forever\, in what is widely considered Brian Friel’s masterwork. \nPerformance Dates\nMarch 26\, 27\, 28\, 29 \n\nThursday – Saturday • 7:00 pm\nSunday • 2:00 pm\n\nAvailable Roles\n\nMichael:  Young man\, narrator\nKate: Forty\, schoolteacher\nMaggie: Thirty-eight\, housekeeper\nAgnes: Thirty-five\, knitter\nRose: Thirty-two\, knitter\nChris: Twenty-six\, Michael’s mother\nGerry: Thirty-three\, Michael’s father\nJack: Fifty-three\, missionary priest

SUMMARY:Inspecting Carol
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews Community Theater proudly presents Inspecting Carol by Daniel J. Sullivan\, a backstage holiday comedy that spoofs both A Christmas Carol and the frantic world of community theater. The play follows a struggling theatre troupe as they prepare for their annual production of Dickens’ classic. Everything goes wrong: actors forget lines\, the set collapses\, egos clash\, and rehearsals spiral out of control. When the troupe mistakes a clueless wannabe actor for a feared National Endowment for the Arts inspector\, panic sets in\, and desperate attempts to impress lead to even more ridiculous disasters. \nFull of slapstick\, satire\, and seasonal spirit\, Inspecting Carol is a joyful romp that celebrates the magic (and madness) of live theater. With clever wordplay\, physical comedy\, and a cast of eccentric characters\, this hilarious farce is perfect for anyone who enjoys laughter\, theatrical hijinks\, and the unpredictable charm of community theater. \nPerformances: December 12th-14th\, 16th\, & 19th-21stFridays & Saturdays • 7:00 pmSundays • 2:00 pm | Tuesday • 7:00 pm \nDirected by Max G. SUMMARY:Bellman Presentation: Spearfish Piano Duet Club
DESCRIPTION:Things are absolutely better in pairs! Join us for the most anticipated Bellman Brown Bag Series of the season on Wednesday\, December 10 at noon in the Matthews Theater. Spearfish Piano Duet Club presents their annual holiday event\, an hour of piano melodies played by four hands. \nIt’s always wise to get here early for a good seat. This event is free and open to the public and the theater typically fills up quickly. \nThe Spearfish Piano Duet Club has performed on the Bellman Brown Bag series since 2006. The popular December program includes holiday music and familiar classical music for two performers on one piano. The Duet Club began in 2003\, under the leadership of the late Synva Chrysler\, as a way for intermediate and advanced pianists to maintain their piano skills and at the same time have fun and enjoy each other’s musical talents. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series… \n\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month.Dr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002.Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment. This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives.

SUMMARY:Bellman Presentation: Heart Mountain Internment Camp
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Jo Powell shares the powerful history of the Heart Mountain Internment Camp in Powell\, Wyoming. One of ten camps where Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated during World War II. Through stories\, research\, and reflection\, Powell sheds light on this pivotal chapter of American history and its lasting impact.\n\n\nDr. Jo Powell\nDr. Jo Powell is an author\, illustrator\, sculptor and educator in Spearfish.  She is the author of the Coloristory Books\, books which present local history with a coloring book component.  Dr. Powell believes that coloring books can be educational tools\, and has written several about this area of the Black Hills. Her latest book is about the Japanese Incarceration Camp near Cody\, Wyoming.\n\nHeart Mountain Internment Camp\nIn 1941\, when Imperial Japan bombed Pearl Harbor\, the United States responded in several ways. First\, they declared war on Japan and its allies. Second\, the Government rounded up all the Japanese and Japanese Americans on the West Coast\, 120\,000 of them\, and sent them to incarceration camps in the interior of the country for the duration of the war. Although the stated reason for this illegal detainment was to protect the Japanese population\, the reasons are much more complex. This talk will examine this detainment and its causes and its effects on the Japanese and Japanese Americans both then and now.  The topic of illegal detainment\, incarceration of innocent people\, and human rights still has much pertinence in today’s world.\n\n\nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture.
