SUMMARY:Clash of the Titans
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, February 25 from 2-4 pm in the Matthews Theater for a screening of the classic fantasy film\, Clash of the Titans. \nClash of the Titans is the final film to showcase the mind-blowing stop-motion scenes of film artist\, Ray Harryhausen. With powerfully crafted scenes such as the attack of the Kraken or Perseus’s encounter with Medusa\, Harryhausen’s scenes were\, indeed\, a frame-by-frame labor of love. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojw1sau98Jg” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \nWhen the Greek gods grow angry with the mortals for their lack of acknowledgment to the gods\, Zeus punishes them\, which in turn kills a family of fishermen leaving only their son\, Perseus\, alive. \nWhen the queen declares that her daughter\, Andromeda\, is more beautiful than Aphrodite\, Hades is given permission to punish the mortals. Hades punishment: Andromeda must be sacrificed to Zeus or Hades will release the Kraken. \nWhen Perseus comes to the realization that he is the half-son of Zeus\, he gets together a band of men to defeat the Kraken. However\, once Hades learns of this plan he sends Calibos after the men. Through the journey\, Perseus learns that the only way to defeat the Kraken is with the head of Medusa. \nPerseus and his men travel to the underworld in search of Medusa\, where all but Persus is killed. He defeats Medusa and in turn defeats Calibos. Perseus is urged by his dying guardian to hurry as the Kraken will be released shortly\, however\, he is too late. His new battle is to save Andromeda from her fate. \n  \nAbout the NEA Big Read\nThe National Endowment for the Arts Big Read\, a partnership with Arts Midwest\, broadens our understanding of our world\, our communities\, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. SUMMARY:Author Talks at the Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Author Talks at the Matthews returns with a new lineup of local writers ready to dive into their stories\, their methods\, and their inspirations. Join us in the fireplace room every Tuesday at 12:30 for an hour with some of the best authors in the Black Hills area! \nAre you interested in presenting an Author Talk? Contact us at 605-717-6967 or engage@matthewsopera.com \nFeatured author…\nFebruary 21: Robyn VanDersys & MJ Witt\nRobyn VanDersys was born in Washington State\, which is where her love for the great outdoors was born.  She has lived in several different states and in 2015 settled in the Black Hills of South Dakota with her husband and kids. Her life has consisted of one adventure to the next\, including racing monster trucks in her early twenties\,  raising three strong children\, riding around Mexico on her four wheeler while living out of a backpack\, and volunteering on a chase team while her husband raced the Baja 1000. She spends her free time off-roading and hiking the many trails of the Black Hills\, and also enjoys traveling and having as many adventures as humanly possible. \nMJ Witt is an apocalyptic fiction writer with Raventhorne Books. Born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota\, MJ Witt has plied his hand at an amazing variety of vocations\, including wilderness outfitter\, horse trainer\, SCUBA diving instructor\, dolphin trainer before finally settling into technology. Being an avid reader his whole life\, the transition to writing is his newest adventure. He loves authors who can tell a good story\, and Robert Heinlein and Louis L’Amour are among his icons. He lives with his wife and child in the Pacific Northwest. If he isn’t working on their farm taking care of the horses and other animals\, you will often find him traveling around the world enjoying new experiences and seeing what’s over the next horizon. \nComing Soon…\nFebruary 28: Noel Hamiel \nNoel Hamiel is a career newspaperman of 35 years beginning at the Huron Plainsman\, and the final 14 years at The Daily Republic where he retired as publisher in 2007. In 2007\, he accepted a position with the South Dakota Community Foundation where he worked with communities statewide in philanthropic development. During his career\, Hamiel received numerous awards for editorial and column writing. He served as an instructor of mass communications at St. Thomas More College\, Fort Thomas\, Ky. He is also the author of Sketches of South Dakota\, published in 2002 and illustrated by Allison Hamiel. \nHamiel will speak about his book\, South Dakota Mathis Murders: Horror in the Heartland\, which focusses on\, perhaps\, the most infamous murder case in state history. Mathis was shot twice in the head at point-blank range inside the family’s steel shed serving as their makeshift home. Two of her three children\, ages 2 and 4\, were also shot in the head. The brutality of the killings shocked the state and set off a frenzy of law enforcement activity. Despite its intensity\, the investigation never found the murderer or the murder weapon. Though charged with the crime\, Mathis’s husband was acquitted\, leaving the door open for endless speculation about what really occurred on that late summer morning of Sept. 8\, 1981. With renewed insight from those involved\, veteran South Dakota journalist Noel Hamiel explores this cold case of murder and mystery that still haunts the Mount Rushmore state.

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series: Dr. Jo Powell
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free-to-attend Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, February 8 at noon in the Matthews Theater with speaker Dr. Jo Powell and her presentation On Mythology. \nMost people are familiar with the myths of the ancient Greeks and Romans\, stories of the gods and goddesses that ruled the world in early Western civilizations.  However\, all people around the world have their own set of myths and legends. But what exactly is mythology?   Why is it so important to us? And is it still important to us in our modern world? What we call mythology today had its foundations in attempting to explain a terrifying world\, and terrifying situations and their consequences (death and suffering).  We humans are complex beings\, but we have simple needs—we need to know why things happen\, we need to find meaning in things\, events\, ourselves.  Each human culture\, from the beginnings of our human history\, makes its own stories about the creation of the world\, the origins of humankind\, and the meaning of life. There is a great\, inborn need in us to understand why things happen\, to make sense of this\, our world. Myths provide meaning/cohesion in a society.  Science\, by its requirement that all things must be proven\, destroyed myths to a certain extent.  Myths are not\, for the most part\, true and proven.  That said\, though\, the purpose of myths is still valid.  We need to understand the underlying truths of myths or chaos results. \nThis lecture will examine mythology as a universal human need\, provide examples of world mythology\, and discuss some examples of folk art that were created based on that culture’s mythology.  We will also discuss why mythology still exists in our “modern” cultures today. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n  \n  \nAbout the NEA Big Read Program\nThe National Endowment for the Arts Big Read\, a partnership with Arts Midwest\, broadens our understanding of our world\, our communities\, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us in the Matthews theater on Saturday\, January 21 from 2-4 pm for a free screening of the 1963 film Jason & the Argonauts. \nThis cult classic was a leader in special effects for its time\, featuring the mind-blowing stop motion scenes of film artist\, Ray Harryhausen. Who can forget the incredible battle against the skeleton army? \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfedvthepRs” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \nAs told by the original Greek epic\, Jason and his crew set sail in search of the legendary Golden Fleece. The first stop made by the Argonauts\, Jason’s crew of highly skilled warriors\, is to an island populated solely by women who\, unknown to Jason and his men\, had killed their husbands. \nAfter the first of many adventures\, Jason and the Argonauts come to the Straits of Bosphorus\, known to the Greeks as the end of the world. The Greeks believed this to be a perilous location and trusted that the rocks would crash into and ships that made an attempt to pass. However\, Jason had earlier helped a prophet who instructed him to send a bird ahead\, allowing the rocks to reopen for his ship instead of crashing into it. \nAt the almost-end of his journey\, Jason is faced with yet another set of challenges given to him by King Aietes\, the holder of the Golden Fleece. Given a list of tasks deemed to be impossible\, Jason accomplishes them all with the help of one person- Medea\, the daughter of King Aietes. Medea had taken a liking to Jason and offered her help in these challenges in exchange for him agreeing to marry her. \nJason and Medea return to Greece to reclaim his fathers throne\, but their success is short-lived. They become exiled to Corinth where Jason\, breaking his promise to the gods to only be true to Medea\, accepts the offer of the king for his daughters hand in marriage. Medea\, enraged by the exchange\, proceeds to kill all the women\, and her children with Jason. She later finds her way to marriage with Achilles on Mount Olympus. \n  \nAbout the NEA Big Read\nThe National Endowment for the Arts Big Read\, a partnership with Arts Midwest\, broadens our understanding of our world\, our communities\, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. SUMMARY:The Two Tracks
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews\, in partnership with Spread the Tunes\, is excited to bring you The Two Tracks as part of our “JAM-uary” music series! The Two Tracks will take the stage on Friday\, January 20 at 7 pm. General admission tickets for this single event are $12 in advance or $15 day of show. The entire concert series can also be purchased for a discounted price of $40! \nThis concert benefits Grooming Alliance of Spearfish and Black Hills Nordic Ski Club. \n“There is just enough twang in the music to make it country and just enough rock to make it interesting.”\n– No Depression \n\nAbout the Band\nAmerican Songwriter has this to say about The Two Tracks: “They avoid many of the cliches and gimmicks that have grown common in the Americana world while still championing a natural\, Earth-grown sound. To hear an acoustic quartet reach a level of dynamic and thematic intensity like The Two Tracks do is an immeasurably rewarding experience. It’s pure musicianship\, it’s pure excellence\, it’s pure Americana.” \nHusband and wife duo Julie and Dave Huebner write songs that traverse the male and female perspective with emotional and natural images of rural American life. The band cares about lyrics\, story\, the power of the song as much as the music itself\, and every arrangement is designed to fully highlight that direct connection between the song and the listener. Hailing from the eastern side of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming\, the band has traversed the country bringing their joyful\, unique sound to stages big and small\, including NewWestFest (CO)\, Deadwood Jam (SD)\, Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival (CA)\, MeadowGrass (CO)\, Albino Skunk Music Festival (SC)\, Red Ants Pants Music Festival (MT)\, Levitt Sioux Falls (SD)\, LevittAMP Green Bay (WI)\, Ashley for the Arts (WI)\, Beartrap Summer Festival (WY)\, Sioux River Folk Festival (SD)\, Music on the Mothership (NM)\, Oystergrass (WY)\, and The LAWN (CO)\, to name a few\, and opened for artists such as Orville Peck\, Eilen Jewell\, Kitchen Dwellers\, Black Lillies\, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades and more. They recently completed their first international trip\, traveling to Dubai for performances at the World Expo. \nJulie’s driving rhythm guitar\, on-stage enthusiasm and vocal prowess dance perfectly with Dave’s rich voice and unique cello playing\, adding a layer of surprise to the band’s sound. This is complemented wonderfully by the four part harmonies\, and rock solid groove filled out by Taylor Phillps on bass and Fernando Serna on drums. All seasoned musicians and good friends\, they have knit their passions into a tight band family\, and it comes across in their albums and on stage. Their latest Cheers to Solitude\, was one of the last records made at The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville with Grammy winning engineer Sean Sullivan (Sturgill Simpson\, Travelin’ McCourys)\, and was produced by Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider\, Rodney Crowell) and mixed by Grammy winner Trina Shoemaker (Tanya Tucker\, Sheryl Crow)\, spending several weeks on the Top 40 Americana Radio Chart\, and the Top 10 Alt-Country Specialty Chart.  \n“Great vocals\, strong lyrics\, and glorious harmonies.  More than anything\, though\, it’s the sheer joy of making music that comes through.”\n-Glide magazine \nListen Now…\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW4OV58yToc” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGoK39LsydY” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:God's Eye Ornament
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Matthews Gallery on Tuesday\, January 17 at 10 am for Gods Eye Weaving\, where you will be guided through the process of creating a colorful ornament using simple weaving techniques. \nYou may have encountered God’s Eye ornaments as a school project but the activity has a history that is hundreds of years old. \nGod’s Eye ornaments first originated among the Huichol\, the indigenous peoples of what is now western Mexico. They believed that the spiritual world could be accessed through crafting objects. The Huichol made large ceremonial shields with colored yarn and sticks as protection against the uncertainties of the future\, so that a god could keep a watchful eye over the craftsman. \nBlack yarn or a mirrored disk in the center of the God’s Eye is intended to help the god see better and where the stick foundation crosses\, an opening was left so that shamans and gods could travel easily between the spirit world and earth. The four points of the “eye” are believed to represent the four earthly elements (fire\, water\, earth and air). \n \nThis workshop is free to attend\, however\, space is limited to 10 participants. Registration is required. Contact the Matthews Community Engagement Manager at (605)717-6967 or email engage@matthewsopera.com to reserve your spot. \n  \nAbout the NEA Big Read\nThe National Endowment for the Arts Big Read\, a partnership with Arts Midwest\, broadens our understanding of our world\, our communities\, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. SUMMARY:What Do You See?
DESCRIPTION:Young artists are being invited to the Matthews on Saturday\, January 14 at noon for “What Do You See\,” a painting project workshop. \nAfter listening to a passage from Circe\, students paint the characters or scenes they see while objectives of line\, shape\, form\, and space are present. A discussion will take place after each masterpiece has been created. \nAbout the Book\nIn the house of Helios\, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans\, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful\, like her father\, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship\, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft\, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. \nThreatened\, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island\, where she hones her occult craft\, tames wild beasts\, and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology\, including the Minotaur\, Daedalus\, and his doomed son Icarus\, the murderous Medea\, and\, of course\, wily Odysseus. \nBut there is danger\, too\, for a woman who stands alone\, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods\, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most\, Circe must summon all her strength and choose\, once and for all\, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from\, or the mortals she has come to love. \nWith unforgettably vivid characters\, mesmerizing language\, and page-turning suspense\, Circe is a triumph of storytelling\, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry\, palace intrigue\, love\, and loss\, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world. \nAbout the NEA Big Read\nThe National Endowment for the Arts Big Read\, a partnership with Arts Midwest\, broadens our understanding of our world\, our communities\, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. SUMMARY:The Sweet Lillies
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews\, in partnership with Spread the Tunes\, is excited to bring you The Sweet Lillies as part of our “JAM-uary” music series! The Sweet Lillies will take the stage on Friday\, January 13 at 7 pm. General admission tickets for this single event are $12 in advance or $15 day of show. The entire concert series can also be purchased for a discounted price of $40! \nThis concert benefits the new Spearfish Skate Park. \n\nAbout the Band\nThe Sweet Lillies’ music is\, first and foremost\, heartfelt and collaborative.  Those defining traits are given life by the trio of musicians who make up the Lillies\, Julie Gussaroff\, Becca Bisque\, and Dustin Rohleder\, who have combined their individual strengths together to deliver powerful narratives of life in song.  With their acoustic string-band lineup of guitar\, viola\, and upright bass given flight by ethereal\, vocal harmonies that float like a dream\, the Sweet Lillies’ music has an old-time soul with a forward-looking eye.  The Sweet Lillies have incorporated all of their cumulative life experiences into their music\, their song-writing\, and their artistry\, crafting an uncommonly-beautiful style they have christened String-Americana – a nod to the band’s all-encompassing musical tastes and willingness to experiment with genres.  As Gussaroff explains\, “Some musicians learn from teachers\, some learn from family members\, and some are self-taught.  Some musicians are classically trained\, some come up through folk\, some draw from multiple springs\, from hip hop through pop to bebop.  In the Lillies’ all of these skill sets are valuable\, relevant\, and appreciated.” \n  The Sweet Lillies are built upon their collaborative ideals and are always ready to share a stage or develop a project with any musicians who share the same no-holds-barred creative approach.  This has made each one of their inventive\, energetic live shows a wholly unique event as setlists are changed on the fly\, songs are given new life and shape\, and guests are always welcome to join in the creative explosion.  Those on-stage partnerships create a space for incorporating instruments\, arrangements\, and styles that aren’t necessarily typical of the genre\, but that help create a rich\, compelling sound that defies easy categorization.  Over the years they have been joined onstage by a number of legendary performers including\, Sam Bush\, George Porter Jr.\, Peter Rowan\, Sally Van Meter\, Andy Hall from the Infamous Stringdusters\, Kyle Hollingsworth and Jason Hahn from the String Cheese Incident\, Jennifer Hartswick\, and Natalie Cressman from the Trey Anastasio Band\, among many others.  Andy Thorn from Leftover Salmon who has sat in on many of those live adventures says\, “It’s always a joy to play with the Sweet Lillies. Over the years\, I’ve seen them evolve from a folk-and-bluegrass group into a genre-bending powerhouse. Today\, at a Lillies show\, you’ll hear everything from their beautiful\, soulful originals\, to creative reinventions of your favorite 90s hip-hop tracks. They’re always ready to have fun – on stage and off – without losing an ounce of their professionalism.” \nThe Sweet Lillies were born from Gussaroff’s desire to form a band in which each member would be an equal participant in terms of songwriting\, singing\, and creative input.  After years of accompanying other artists\, serving as a side player\, and writing songs for others\, multi-instrumentalist and classical-trained vocalist Gussaroff wanted to establish a true musical collective that would highlight the best qualities of all involved.  In 2014 Gussaroff met Bisque\, who was a classically trained violist.  The two found an immediate and deep musical connection and the Sweet Lillies were born.  In 2017 at a campground jam at the Hangtown Ball they heard guitarist Rohleder.  That night the three played for what they remembered as\, “Ten magical hours.”  The following year in 2018\, Rohleder joined the Sweet Lillies full-time completing Gussaroff’s vision.   \nSince forming in 2013 the Sweet Lillies have released three albums: 2016’s self-titled release\, and 2018’s A Lighter Hue produced by Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman.  Their latest album\, Common Ground\, produced by Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone\, was released last year.  \nGussaroff explains\, “String band music is compelling.  What makes it so universally appealing is the way it lends itself to effective fusion of diverse styles\, skill-sets and conceptions.”  The Sweet Lillies take that notion to heart and do just that with their album and performances that exemplifies their collective spirit and pulls from all the varied arrows in the band’s quiver.  The Sweet Lilles stay true to the string-band soul that is at the heart of their music\, but prove they are also unafraid to explore all corners of their distinct musical experiences. Producer Carbone sums it up best\, “The world needs a band like The Sweet Lillies\, whose music is positive without denying the darkness in the world.  Their songs are uplifting but they also invite the listener to be introspective and draw their own conclusions.  Like all great music it does so while taking you on a journey of joy.” \nListen Now…\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygVK3fQwDk” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_1Bj31Ag4″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO2MkJJVZnE” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Locals Only: Adda Boyd\, Randy Hedge and The String Goats
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews\, in partnership with Spread the Tunes\, is excited to bring you Locals Only as part of our “JAM-uary” music series! Locals Only is a multi-musician event featuring local musicians Adda Boyd\, Randy Hedge and The String Goats on Friday\, January 6 at 7 pm. General admission tickets for this single event are $12 in advance or $15 day of show. The entire concert series can also be purchased for a discounted price of $40! \nThis concert benefits The Front Porch Coalition\, a unified front for suicide prevention. \n\nAbout the Bands\nThe String Goats\nThe String Goats are a Spearfish bluegrass supergroup of sorts\, featuring members of Six Mile Road (Jake Jackson on fiddle & vocals\, Trappor Masson on banjo\, and Mike Brennan on bass)\, along with Humbletown’s Dylan Lewis on guitar & vocals.  They’ve been playing around the Spearfish area since early 2022.  “Pure\, simple\, South Dakota bluegrass.” \n  \nAdda Boyd\nSpearfish up-and-comer Adda Boyd continues to make a name for herself as a confident new voice in neo-traditional country. Adda’s fresh off a solo performance at the world-famous Ruffed Up Duck Saloon in Laramie\, part of the first-ever Western AF Music Showcase. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=ZG-VfIIxjPc” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n\n\nRandy Hedge\nRandy Hedge\, known locally as “The Singin’ Pastor\,” is a local singer/songwriter\, and pastor for The United Church of Christ in Spearfish. After spending his career as a university counselor in Wisconsin and North Dakota\, circumstances led him to our neck of the woods. This is his Matthews premier. He spent his growing-up years in the Black Hills and Wyoming.  Back then\, he listened to everything from the Eagles to the Beatles and James Taylor. Randy learned to play guitar one summer at the family cabin in Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills and has been playing\, writing\, and performing regularly his whole life. His full-time work has been in education and in ministry\, but music has always been part of who he is.  And\, it’s no surprise he leans toward songs that are from the heart. Randy has played in clubs and restaurants and at church since high school.  These days?  You might see him in a wine bar\, a microbrewery\, or at events like weddings and festivals (although he’s not the dance guy). He plays mostly solo\, and his song list is much longer and wider than it was back in the day. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da7rrvMDZFY” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]
