Designed to be flexible for your trip through the fourth dimension\, these plays can be performed in any combination\, and you can choose to thread them together with optional interludes that form a tale of three time travelers. When you find yourself fighting with your friends on the night before the Constitution is due\, listening in at a telephone switchboard in the 1940s\, trying to avoid the more gruesome aspects of medieval times\, or exploring a mysterious possible future\, only one thing is certain: there’s humor in human nature. \n“Aesop’s Fables Redux” | Group B | Actors in grades 2-6 (entering these grades in Fall 2022) A witty narrator helps an inquisitive child understand some famous expressions by exploring Aesop’s beloved fables. The lessons behind these expressions are playfully illustrated through a series of well-known stories and brought to life by a variety of human and animal characters. These classic fables\, such as The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Goose That Laid the Golden Egg\, provide a fresh\, warm\, and fun learning experience.

SUMMARY:Call for Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center is excited to announce an open call for entry for their annual summer exhibition. The call is open to artists of the Black Hills to be juried into the non-profit art gallery and sell their artwork from May through September\, 2023. \nFor application purposes\, the Black Hills area includes anywhere within approximately one hundred miles of the Black Hills in South Dakota and Wyoming. This call is open to new artists and artists who have previously been contracted with the Matthews. \nTo have their work considered\, entrants are required to submit three digital images of their art\, a brief artist statement\, and an application that can be found on the Matthews website or picked up at the gallery. A $20 application fee is due upon submission. Works must be for sale and will receive 78% compensation if sold\, with the remaining 22% supporting gallery and art education programming at the Matthews.  \nThrough this call\, The Matthews hopes to find thirty to forty artists whose work will be showcased. During the jurying process\, the Matthews exhibits committee will assess applicants based on the quality of work submitted and the gallery’s needs in terms of aesthetic balance and diversity. \nArtists who are accepted will also have the option to have prints available for sale at the Matthews booth during Festival in the Park.  \nArtist applications are due before 5 p.m. on Friday\, April 21. Jurying takes place the following week. All artists who have applied will receive notification of the jury findings on Friday\, April 28. \nThe Matthews will begin exhibiting the work of contracted artists beginning Monday\, May 15 through September 2. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday\, May 19 from 5-7 pm in the Matthews Gallery. Founded by Ukrainian professional duo Solomia Gorokhivska and Andrei Pidkivka\, musicians of Gerdan bring the fire and the edge of melodic ideas and rhythms that capture the listener. \nThe ensemble is named after Gerdan\, a multi-colored\, intricately woven beaded necklace from Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine. Like this dazzling and exquisite necklace of different colors and shapes\, musicians create original arrangements of traditional Ukrainian folk melodies and rhythms that reflect their passion for blending the old with the new\, in a style that is fresh\, lively\, and beautiful. The exclusive collection of the Ukrainian authentic flutes in combination with other traditional and modern instruments create unforgettable musical experience. Gerdan’s musicians have been acknowledged for their technique and exquisite musical presentations performing an exciting Eastern European music repertoire. They reveal their passion for traditional music in their artistic expression to build cultural bridges in time and distance. \nGerdan ensemble performs and conducts educational outreach programs in public and private schools in Maryland\, Virginia and DC for the K-12 grade students. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, April 12 at noon in the Matthews Theater with speaker James Casper. \n“Close Cooperation Within a Society” – Sounds Far-Fetched Doesn’t It! James Casper will draw on his decades of experience as a commercial beekeeper as he discusses the inner workings of one of nature’s most complex animal societies: The Honey Bee Colony: where normally only one queen bee exists in the company of 60\,000 workers (females) and up to several thousand drones (males). She is the mother of all individuals in the colony and is a  very efficient producer of eggs but devoid of maternal instinct and physically incapable of caring for her young. The queen\, along with her own genetic DNA\, is also the custodian of the male parent’s contribution to the heredity of her female offspring and thus is responsible for the characteristics of the colony. Her presence controls the morale of the colony through the production and sharing of pheromones. The colony is a highly cooperative group where tasks are allocated so that more urgent needs are met before less urgent ones\, and individual actions are coordinated into a coherent whole\, resulting in a set of mechanisms that make close cooperation a reality. \n\nAbout James Casper…\nSince my childhood\, I have been fascinated by the groupings of these mostly white and often tall stacks of boxes sitting picturesque against the background of fields full of colorful blossoms that filled the air with a certain sweetness. The bee hive was the center of my attraction. My interest was raised to a full pitch once I purchased my first two hives and the result was\, well\, I won’t lie. I became a full-fledged “Keeper of the Bees”. Forty-five or so years later and I still absolutely love the journey through the makings of a honey bee colony. Follow me and I will introduce you to the fascinating world of the honey bee.\n  \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. This event was originally part of our JAM-uary series and previously purchased tickets will be honored. \nThis concert benefits the Artemis House of Spearfish. \n“The thing that most endeared me to Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs was their complete inability to take themselves seriously…this is a group that’s having more fun than may be legal.”\n– No Depression \n\nAbout the Band\nLaney Lou and the Bird Dogs are an energetic Americana band from Bozeman\, Montana\, that infuses four-part harmonies\, engaging songwriting\, and rock-n-roll drive into a modern approach to traditional folk music. Coming from varied musical backgrounds\, the five-person ensemble creates a sound unique to them\, but one that finds common ground by adding the energy of Montana’s big sky country into their music. The Bird Dogs weave stories through their songs that are reflective\, joyous\, longing\, or meant to share a journey with the listener. Her favorite pastimes are gardening\, hiking\, camping\, and exploring her creativity while surrounded by nature. In addition to her passion for writing and painting\, she practices reflexology and massage therapy. \nShe has published several children’s books during her five years living in the United States: Lisa and the Bears\, A Devils Tower Secret\, and Eagle Feather. Additionally\, she is also the illustrator for her books\, working in oils and acrylics. The subjects for these books are National Parks\, children\, and animals. Her early years as a farm wife and mother\, was followed by a twenty-year career as a Fairfield Inn by Marriott General Manager. Now retired\, she draws on her life experiences for writing inspiration. \nLynda Edwards began writing after taking creative writing courses provided by Community Education of the Black Hills. Her writings include fiction\, poetry\, and memoirs f other childhood ranch life. Her writings have won awards at the SD State Fair. \nEric Beeman grew up in Minnesota. After high school\, he served four years in the US Navy\, then enrolled in an electronics program. He retired in 2019 after a career as a maintenance technician. \nThe Character of Marnie Anderson\nShe is a 45-year-old white female of Scandinavian descent. Her 5’ 10” tall\, 160-pound frame shows her athletic body and love of outdoor activities including cross-country skiing and biking. With long\, straight blonde hair and blue eyes she is attractive in business suits or active wear. Marney was born and raised on a farm outside La Crosse\, WI. The oldest of seven children\, three brothers and three sisters\, Marnie was expected to lead by example.  She earned her MBA from the University of Minnesota\, bringing her immense success as a sought-after City Administrator. She has lived in Illinois\, Michigan\, and Iowa before taking her new position in Sunnyside\, at $250\,000.00 per year. Marnie loves the challenge that each new community brings to her goal of being the best in her chosen profession. Marnie has never failed to succeed in achieving the goals each community set out.  In working her way up\, the ladder of success\, never spending more than three years in one community\, she left behind her husband Arthur\, a high school principal who chose to stay in Iowa. Contact us at 605-717-6967 or engage@matthewsopera.com \nFeatured author…\nFebruary 28: Noel Hamiel\nNoel Hamiel is a career newspaperman of 35 years beginning at the Huron Plainsman\, and the final 14 years at The Daily Republic where he retired as publisher in 2007. In 2007\, he accepted a position with the South Dakota Community Foundation where he worked with communities statewide in philanthropic development. During his career\, Hamiel received numerous awards for editorial and column writing. He served as an instructor of mass communications at St. Thomas More College\, Fort Thomas\, Ky. He is also the author of Sketches of South Dakota\, published in 2002 and illustrated by Allison Hamiel. \nHamiel will speak about his book\, South Dakota Mathis Murders: Horror in the Heartland\, which focusses on\, perhaps\, the most infamous murder case in state history. Mathis was shot twice in the head at point-blank range inside the family’s steel shed serving as their makeshift home. Two of her three children\, ages 2 and 4\, were also shot in the head. The brutality of the killings shocked the state and set off a frenzy of law enforcement activity. Despite its intensity\, the investigation never found the murderer or the murder weapon. Though charged with the crime\, Mathis’s husband was acquitted\, leaving the door open for endless speculation about what really occurred on that late summer morning of Sept. 8\, 1981. With powerfully crafted scenes such as the attack of the Kraken or Perseus’s encounter with Medusa\, Harryhausen’s scenes were\, indeed\, a frame-by-frame labor of love. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojw1sau98Jg” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \nWhen the Greek gods grow angry with the mortals for their lack of acknowledgment to the gods\, Zeus punishes them\, which in turn kills a family of fishermen leaving only their son\, Perseus\, alive. \nWhen the queen declares that her daughter\, Andromeda\, is more beautiful than Aphrodite\, Hades is given permission to punish the mortals. Hades punishment: Andromeda must be sacrificed to Zeus or Hades will release the Kraken. \nWhen Perseus comes to the realization that he is the half-son of Zeus\, he gets together a band of men to defeat the Kraken. However\, once Hades learns of this plan he sends Calibos after the men. Through the journey\, Perseus learns that the only way to defeat the Kraken is with the head of Medusa. \nPerseus and his men travel to the underworld in search of Medusa\, where all but Persus is killed. He defeats Medusa and in turn defeats Calibos. Perseus is urged by his dying guardian to hurry as the Kraken will be released shortly\, however\, he is too late. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us from 5-8 pm on Friday\, February 24 in the Matthews Art Gallery for a linocut printing project\, Introduction to Relief\, with BHSU art instructor Michael Baum. \nDuring this introductory workshop participants will become acquainted with the relief printmaking process through making a linocut. Artists will create a design\, transfer the design to a piece of linoleum\, carve\, and print a small edition of linocuts. This workshop will focus on proper tool usage and maintenance\, inking strategies\, and at home printing tips. By the end of this workshop\, all participants will have a basic understanding of linocut and how to print in a professional print shop and at home. Her life has consisted of one adventure to the next\, including racing monster trucks in her early twenties\,  raising three strong children\, riding around Mexico on her four wheeler while living out of a backpack\, and volunteering on a chase team while her husband raced the Baja 1000. She spends her free time off-roading and hiking the many trails of the Black Hills\, and also enjoys traveling and having as many adventures as humanly possible. \nMJ Witt is an apocalyptic fiction writer with Raventhorne Books. Born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota\, MJ Witt has plied his hand at an amazing variety of vocations\, including wilderness outfitter\, horse trainer\, SCUBA diving instructor\, dolphin trainer before finally settling into technology. Being an avid reader his whole life\, the transition to writing is his newest adventure. He loves authors who can tell a good story\, and Robert Heinlein and Louis L’Amour are among his icons. He lives with his wife and child in the Pacific Northwest. He is also the author of Sketches of South Dakota\, published in 2002 and illustrated by Allison Hamiel. \nHamiel will speak about his book\, South Dakota Mathis Murders: Horror in the Heartland\, which focusses on\, perhaps\, the most infamous murder case in state history. Mathis was shot twice in the head at point-blank range inside the family’s steel shed serving as their makeshift home. Two of her three children\, ages 2 and 4\, were also shot in the head. The brutality of the killings shocked the state and set off a frenzy of law enforcement activity. Despite its intensity\, the investigation never found the murderer or the murder weapon. Though charged with the crime\, Mathis’s husband was acquitted\, leaving the door open for endless speculation about what really occurred on that late summer morning of Sept. 8\, 1981. With renewed insight from those involved\, veteran South Dakota journalist Noel Hamiel explores this cold case of murder and mystery that still haunts the Mount Rushmore state.
