DESCRIPTION:Theater on the Run is back for its twelfth year on Saturdays\, September 9 & 16 at 6 pm! \nFour downtown Spearfish businesses open their doors to a group of our actors who will perform a playlet in each location. After each show\, the audience moves to a new location to enjoy another performance. Completing the “run”\, the evening ends with a performance in the Matthews theater for all 104 ticketholders. Refreshments are available at each venue. \nThe play and cast remain the same on both dates\, just the downtown locations change. Tickets are limited to 26 seats per venue\, for a total of 104 tickets each weekend. \nOn both evenings\, The Matthews Opera House theater will be the location of the finale performance. \nA Sunday matinee performance is also scheduled. This special showing will “run in place” with all shows presented in the Matthews theater and snacks provided in the fireplace room. \nHow does Theater on the Run work?\nTheater on the Run begins with four different groups of theater patrons–26 people each– starting at a pre-determined location. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production. This will continue until the finale\, where all four groups will meet in the Matthews Opera House for the last show. Each venue will have beverages for sale\, with some offering adult and some offering non-adult beverages. Appetizers are included in the cost of the ticket. \nTheater on the Run is a fun and unique way to experience theater which has made it one of our most popular events each year. A limited amount of tickets are available and the event has quickly sold out since 2012\, so make sure to get them early. This event is one you won’t want to miss! Tickets are only sold in The Matthews art gallery or online and must be purchased in advance. The participating venues are NOT selling tickets. \nA sporting chance…\nTicket sales begin on Tuesday\, August 15 at 10 a.m. This will be strictly enforced.\nTickets sell out quickly and we want to ensure every patron has an equal opportunity to get theirs. Since their founding\, they have grown into a professional and trusted team of paranormal researchers. In the beginning\, they set out believing that to be taken as a serious paranormal investigations team it was imperative that they set high standards for themselves and their practices. Their guiding principles–critical thinking\, common sense\, continuing education\, and a healthy dose of skepticism–have served their clients well. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n

SUMMARY:Theater on the Run 2023
DESCRIPTION:Theater on the Run is back for its twelfth year on Saturdays\, September 9 & 16 at 6 pm! \nFour downtown Spearfish businesses open their doors to a group of our actors who will perform a playlet in each location. After each show\, the audience moves to a new location to enjoy another performance. Completing the “run”\, the evening ends with a performance in the Matthews theater for all 104 ticketholders. Refreshments are available at each venue. \nThe play and cast remain the same on both dates\, just the downtown locations change. Tickets are limited to 26 seats per venue\, for a total of 104 tickets each weekend. \nOn both evenings\, The Matthews Opera House theater will be the location of the finale performance. \nA Sunday matinee performance is also scheduled. This special showing will “run in place” with all shows presented in the Matthews theater and snacks provided in the fireplace room. \nHow does Theater on the Run work?\nTheater on the Run begins with four different groups of theater patrons–26 people each– starting at a pre-determined location. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production. This will continue until the finale\, where all four groups will meet in the Matthews Opera House for the last show. Each venue will have beverages for sale\, with some offering adult and some offering non-adult beverages. Appetizers are included in the cost of the ticket. \nTheater on the Run is a fun and unique way to experience theater which has made it one of our most popular events each year. A limited amount of tickets are available and the event has quickly sold out since 2012\, so make sure to get them early. This event is one you won’t want to miss! Tickets are only sold in The Matthews art gallery or online and must be purchased in advance. The participating venues are NOT selling tickets. \nA sporting chance…\nTicket sales begin on Tuesday\, August 15 at 10 a.m. This will be strictly enforced.\nTickets sell out quickly and we want to ensure every patron has an equal opportunity to get theirs. Any attempts to purchase tickets prior to August 15 at 10 am will not be honored. \nA little advice for groups…\nIf attending the performance with a group\, we recommend purchasing all tickets in one transaction to ensure seats are available to accommodate the entire party. If you must purchase them separately\, please pay careful attention to your “starting” location to make sure the whole party “starts their run” in the same venue. Due to seating limitations\, we are unable to make changes once your purchase is complete. \nOnly 104 tickets per evening!\nWe have only 104 tickets each for Sept. 9 and 16\, for a total of 208 tickets. All tickets are $40. The ticket includes the show and appetizers that are provided by all of the participating downtown venues. Williams\nDirected by Jon Steven Wiley\nAfter comedy has been outlawed in society\, two bottom-of-the-barrel comics face trial for committing comedy.  They discover humor is no laughing matter. \n“Matterhorn\,” by Rich Orloff\nDirected by Matt Woodard\nStuck in a never-ending line at Disneyland\, a husband and wife are just on the verge of killing each other — until they devise a novel solution to their marital woes… \n“Complaint Department and Lemonade\,” by Kamron Klitgaard\nDirected by Tytus Spivey\nIn this rapid succession of hysterical grievances\, the complaint department takes on everything from Oreo icing to kleptomania and from songs stuck in the head to the price of cheese and on and on and on.  Could there be a glimmer of hope for anyone in charge of a complaint department? \n“Pier #70\,” by Grant Binkleman\nDirected by Max Merchen\nBased on a true story. This retelling is mostly accurate…except when it’s not. \n“A Tale of Two Spectators\,” by Peter Manos\nDirected by CA Dougherty\nIn a park\, a man and a woman secretly watch their respective spouses carry on an affair. As time goes on we realize they have been meeting like this to watch their spouses for quite some time and have even developed something of a bond with each other\, despite their predicament. This\, he soon learns\, was a mistake. He immediately clashes with the authoritarian head nurse\, a fierce martinet named Nurse Ratched. Despite Ratched’s strict reign\, McMurphy quickly takes over the yard\, leading others out of introversion\, staging a revolt so that they can see the World Series on television\, and arranging a rollicking midnight party with liquor and women. But McMurphy’s brash insubordination has its consequences; Ratched ultimately triumphs by subjecting McMurphy to a frontal lobotomy. \nAudition Dates\nSeptember 7 & 8  from 6 – 8 pm. Will have a choreographed fight scene. \nCHIEF BROMDEN – (M\, Patient – 20’s to 50’s) The huge\, bull-muscled son of a Chief. He has been in the hospital for more than ten years. \nAIDE WARREN and AIDE WILLIAMS – (M\, Staff – 20’s to 40’s) The daytime aides. Cruel and demeaning\, they are Nurse Rached’s stooges. (Fight scenes\, both use foul language) \nNURSE FLINN – (F\, Staff – 20’s To 60’s) A vapid woman with apprehensive eyes. Fearful and religious. \nDALE HARDING – (M\, Patient – 40 plus) College-educated with a sharp mind and tongue. Although he is married\, he is effeminate and questions his masculinity. \nBILLY BIBBIT – (M\, Patient – 20’s to 30’s) Shy\, with a bad stutter. He seems younger than his age and is dominated by his mother. \nSCANLON – (M\, Patient – 20’s to 60) Involuntarily committed to the hospital. Uses foul language. \nCHESWICK – (M\, Patient – 30 to 60) Eager and quick to argue or fight\, yet cowardly. All talk\, no action. \nMARTINI – (M\, Patient – 25 to 60) A little Italian man who lives in a world of delusional hallucinations. \nRUCKLY – (M\, Patient –  25 to 50) A Chronic patient due to a botched lobotomy. Uses foul language. \n\nSPIVEY – (M\, Staff – 40 to 70) The administrator and psychiatrist of the mental institution. Combining his family’s deep ties to regional traditional singing with his years of playing to crowded street corners\, Nick has sought to forge a hybridized form of raucously clever country music; born of forgotten rocky hollers and bred to confront the tensions of the 21st century South. As evidenced by his surreal album art and anachronistic songwriting\, Nick’s creative output is steeped in the complicated history of his beloved home of rural Arkansas\, but crafted as a conscious rebuke of country music’s blind allegiance to historical seats of power and repression. With a kind word and a mean yodel\, Nick hopes to put the ‘Try’ in country. \nDean Johnson\nFor over ten years\, Dean Johnson’s rustic tenor and simply strummed acoustic guitar have been perking up ears around the PNW and beyond. DESCRIPTION:The Matthews is excited to bring you a special night of theater: “Getting Our Acts Together: A Night of Northern Hills One Acts”! As the host\, Tina is determined the show must go on\, even as duets are being hastily converted to solos\, angsty teens are reading upsetting poetry and everyone’s being hounded by a heckler. Will the town of Holly Springs get their act together or are they doomed to a future of potholes and unrehearsed roller-skating? Find out in this warm and winning community comedy! \n“Couch Potato”\nwritten by Patrick Gabridge \nEric is the ultimate slacker\, but his goal of remaining motionless in front of the TV is in serious jeopardy. His sister and fiance move out and leave him behind in the apartment\, and the two newlyweds moving in aren’t keen to share their space with a complete stranger. Can Eric use his wits to stay rooted\, or is he about to be yanked from his chosen resting place? A fast-paced comedy of inertia. \n“Superhero Sanitarium”\nwritten by Scott Haan \nLois Lancaster is a big-city journalist writing about the current state of mental health facilities. Her research takes her to a hospital populated with a unique group of quirky inmates who imagine they are crime-fighting superheroes. Speed Freak thinks he can run at incredible speeds\, while enthusiastic Dim Bulb thinks he has the ability to turn off lights with his brain. Mental thinks she can read minds\, despite being prone to sudden outbursts of bizarre non-sequiturs. Kevin\, much less quirky and flamboyant than the other inmates\, doesn’t embarrass himself with a ridiculous code name or costume…at least\, not initially. Dr. Gail Eisner appears to be a kindly hospital administrator\, a steady influence needed to effectively run a madhouse like this one. At first\, Lois finds their elaborate superhero fantasies to be an entertaining diversion\, the wild delusions of unstable minds\, until something unusual happens that makes her wonder….

Steep Canyon Rangers have been on a journey that is uniquely their own. The band started in college at UNC-Chapel Hill\, then dove head first into bluegrass in its most traditional form\, and over the years has risen to the top of the bluegrass genre headlining top festivals such as Merlefest and Grey Fox Bluegrass. Only to then be discovered by Steve Martin\, famous actor and banjo player. Martin has taken the Rangers on over a decade-long tour introducing them to hundreds of thousands of new fans and giving them prime-time TV exposure. This has helped SCR become the most recognizable modern name in bluegrass music. The band has continued to tour extensively on their own\, without Martin\, and has expanded their genre into country\, jam\, and Americana. The Rangers are big players in the bluegrass/country and Americana scene today. He worked his way through school as a carpenter\, then\, following graduation\, spent four years teaching high school. \nIt was during that time that his career as a songwriter came into bloom. Struggling to strike a balance between his increasingly rigorous Northwest/West Coast touring and his efforts to get teenagers to love words as much as he did\, Martin found himself in the tricky position of having to choose between his two passions. \nMuch to the delight of his fans\, music won the day. As time goes on we realize they have been meeting like this to watch their spouses for quite some time and have even developed something of a bond with each other\, despite their predicament. Main Street\, Spearfish. \nWe challenged nine playwrights to find the funny and familiar in every era in this collection of ten-minute plays. Designed to be flexible for your trip through the fourth dimension\, these plays can be performed in any combination\, and you can choose to thread them together with optional interludes that form a tale of three time travelers. When you find yourself fighting with your friends on the night before the Constitution is due\, listening in at a telephone switchboard in the 1940s\, trying to avoid the more gruesome aspects of medieval times\, or exploring a mysterious possible future\, only one thing is certain: there’s humor in human nature.

Wests’ poignant lyrics are brilliantly blended with vintage country\, folk and blues\, and timely sensibilities. From epic guitar and harmonica instrumentals to humorous song as story\, Jason never strays very far from the anarchic punk-folk roots of his beloved former band Barefoot Surrender and his celebrated current band Intuitive Compass. \nJason’s younger days as a busker and freight train hopper fostered his keen sense of road-inspired American musical history. Jason toured extensively with guest musicians and bands throughout the lower 48 States and Alaska\, appearing in barn dances and taverns\, theaters and music festivals\, the circus and vaudeville circuits\, on radio and in film. He has shared the stage with the likes of Lost Dog Street Band\, The Resonant Rogues\, Larry And His Flask\, Hot Damn Scandal countless others. \nDea West has worked with several renowned recording engineers\, including Scot Hackwith\, Dennis Dragon\, Dan Emery and Steven Hart\, producing several studio albums and a recent live “Magnolia Session” via Anti-Corp Records of Nashville\, TN which placed #15 on the Billboard Bluegrass charts in October 2020.  In 2021 West began work on two new EPs\, one “Lost Camp Dreams”\, with Scott Hackwith at Cassette LA which is officially available December  30th of 2021\, the second EP to be released later in ‘22 shall remain mysterious until further notice. \nJason belongs to the wild lands and what is left of the American countryside… \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjOP-lKHzY0&t=7s” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \nThe Barn Swallows\nThe Barn Swallows is a band based in Bisbee Az\, formed in 2022. Though only together for a short time\, they have a national tour this summer they will be playing from Texas to Virginia\, through the Midwest\, and on the west coast. Some highlights include performing At the Camel in Richmond VA\, The Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City SD\, Matthews Opera House in Spearfish SD\, at The Britt Festival in Jacksonville\, OR and at The Cotati Accordion Fest in Cotati CA. \nWith a full schedule and new songs\, The Barn Swallows are on a roll. Their instrumentation is comprised of guitars\, mandolin\, clarinet\, accordion and upright bass. Featuring original compositions and vocal harmonies\, the sound ranges from American folk to traditional jazz. DESCRIPTION:Course Description: This course is designed to provide artists with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to effectively reproduce and package their artwork for various purposes. Whether you’re creating prints\, limited editions\, or preparing your artwork for exhibition or sale\, this course will equip you with the essential techniques and best practices to ensure your creations are accurately reproduced and professionally packaged. Following this a photo studio will be set up to have their work professionally photographed to be used for reproduction prints or on websites and social media. \n2D Artwork is limited to 5 unframed pieces per artist and no larger than 30” on the long edge. \n3D Artwork must be less than 30” in width and height as well. \nRegistration Fee: $50  \nRegistration closes June 16.

This showcase features the talents of Black Hills artists with an incredible display of high-quality pieces on exhibit. \nThis opening night event is offered free to the public. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. \nThe Summer Art Series is open to the public through Labor Day during regular business hours\, Monday – Friday\, 10 am – 5 pm.
