Late arrivals will be accommodated in the balcony as seats permit. \nAdvance tickets: $30 for adults and $15 for youth.\nDay of Show: $35 for adults and $20 for youth.\nTickets may be purchased online\, by phone at (605) 642-7973\, or by visiting the Matthews Gallery at 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish. \nThe celebrated two-time South Dakota Fiddle Champ and internationally touring artist Kenny Putnam joins singer/songwriter Jami Lynn for an evening of new\, old\, and original music. The two have performed together in various groups over the years\, but have rarely had a chance to feature their musical conversation in this capacity. Multi-instrumentalist Jake Jackson of Spearfish-based band Six Mile Road will round out their sound on guitar\, violin\, and voice.  \nThe evening will contain a broad range of traditional folk\, original Americana\, and jazz music\, featuring Putnam’s well-honed voice on fiddle\, Jackson’s sharp guitar licks and Jami Lynn’s stylings on banjo and voice– the most compelling part of the evening being the magic of a new collaboration dressed up by the polish and taste of seasoned performers.  \nKENNY PUTNAM Musician and graphic artist Kenny Putnam is from Rapid City but has studied\, lived and worked in many places. As a professional musician he has performed on stages\, big and small–nationally and internationally. Stages include\, The Grand Ol’ Opry\, The Tonight Show\, Hee Haw\, the JFK Center for the Performing Arts\, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and the Oktober Hall in St. Petersburg\, Russia\, performing with the legendary Roy Clark.   \nPutnam is a two-time South Dakota Fiddle Champ who began touring and recording with The Red Willow Band in 1975. He was invited by the Smithsonian Institution in 1975 and 1976 to participate in The Festival of American Folklife\, demonstrating violin making and playing. With Red Willow he toured coast-to-coast for over six years\, making two albums. Putnam got off the road in 1989 to continue his art degree (began at the University of South Dakota) at the University of Iowa earning a B.F.A. in painting and a Master of Journalism by 1992.   \nAfter grad school\, Kenny’s wife Linnea\, a clinical pharmacist\, took a job in Rapid City in 1993. After coming home\, Putnam worked in marketing and the graphic arts for large corporate businesses. Musically\, he performed and recorded with a South Dakota Acoustic Christmas for 21 years. The group raised more than 1.3 million dollars for non-profits organizations across the State. In 2001 Putnam released a solo recording entitled “Sure Beats Me”\, and recently recorded his second album in Austin\, Texas called “Odd Numbers”. Working with musical groups\, he has been a two-time Grammy nominee and\, working with South Dakota Public Broadcasting\, won an Emmy.  \nPutnam is currently doing art\, having opened a ceramic studio. His work is featured at Prairie Edge Gallery in Rapid City\, SD and Rehfelds Fine Art Gallery in Sioux Falls\, SD. Read more about the artist at SDPB Radio! \nJAMI LYNN Hailing from the Great Plains of eastern South Dakota\, Jami Lynn began performing folk and bluegrass music at the age of thirteen. It took little coaxing from her grandfather to make the transition from the audience to the stage\, where old-time country\, polka\, and regional folk music reigned supreme. Now days\, she performs original folk music accompanied on claw-hammer banjo and finger-style guitar. She performs solo\, with Sioux Falls based band\, The JAS Quintet\, and as one half of folk duo The Nesters. When not performing for public audiences\, Jami also brings folk music to elementary students and hospital systems through the South Dakota State Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools & Communities program and Touring Artist program. Read more about the artist in 605 Magazine! \nJAKE JACKSON Jake Jackson currently lives in Spearfish but was raised in the Rockerville area of the Black Hills. Long-known as a vocalist and string musician in the band Six Mile Road\, there aren’t many local stages that he hasn’t played in his 30+ years of performance. \nPrimarily known for his talents on violin and guitar\, Jake also picked up other instruments over the years\, including clawhammer banjo and mandolin. He knew he wanted to play music at the age of nine after the Rapid City chamber orchestra visited his grade school and his journey with the violin began. By 15\, he had found a new love and freedom with music when he began studying bluegrass and Irish fiddle tunes. He picked up the guitar when the band Six Mile Road formed in 1998 and\, since that time\, has performed regularly around the Black Hills. In 2019\, he released an album with Six Mile Road\, “Takes A Long Time\,” and has been featured on several recording projects over the years with a variety of local artists.\n\nAlthough his own compositions can be generalized as Americana\, he enjoys playing Bluegrass\, Celtic tunes\, and Gypsy Jazz music\, though he appreciates a wide variety of genres. The Grateful Dead influenced his thoughts on spontaneous simultaneous manufacture and presentation (improvisation)\, which is essential to the styles of music he creates. He can’t say he ever pursued music\, as much as it’s just been woven into his life and he can’t imagine being without it. SUMMARY:Willi Carlisle with Adda Boyd
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nWe’re having a hootenanny! Join us at the Matthews for Rhythm and Brews\, our new summer series celebrating American roots music! \nNot only do we have an incredible lineup of performers\, check out these ala cart items\, available at the Matthews day of show: \n• Crow Peak Brewery is on-site to keep the libations flowing and…wait for it…each ticketholder (21+) receives a token for one free flight of beer! (Additional drinks available for purchase). \n• Plus\, our friends at The Original Spearfish Breakfast House will be serving up some of their seriously delicious food\, available for purchase throughout the evening. \n\nWilli Carlisle\nTuesday\, September 26\nDoors: 7 pm | Show: 8 pm \nWILLI CARLISLE is a poet and a folk singer for the people\, but his extraordinary gift for turning a phrase isn’t about high falutin’ pontificatin’; it’s about looking out for one another and connecting through our shared human condition. Born and raised on the Midwestern plains\, Carlisle is a product of the punk-to-folk music pipeline that’s long-fueled frustrated young men looking to resist. After falling for the rich ballads and tunes of the Ozarks\, where he now lives\, he began examining the full spectrum of American musical history. This insatiable stylistic diversity is obvious in his wildly raucous live performances\, where songs range from sardonic trucker-ballads like “Vanlife” to the heartbreaking queer waltz “Life on the Fence\,” to an existential talkin’ blues about a panic attack in Walmart’s aisle five. With guitar\, fiddle\, button-box\, banjo\, harmonicas\, rhythm-bones\, and Willi’s booming baritone\, this is bonafide populist folk music in the tradition of cowboys\, frontier fiddlers\, and tall-tale tellers. Carlisle recognizes that the only thing holding us back from greatness is each other. With a quick wit and big sing-alongs\, these folksongs bring us a step closer to breaking down our divides. \n“Willi Carlisle’s latest is good for what ails ya\, whatever ails ya.”\n-Arkansas Times \n“I’ll be damned if the heartstrings don’t get a firm tug.”\n-Music Mecca \n“A rave-up raconteur and a seasoned troubadour in the vein of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott or Utah Phillips\, Carlisle sings big\, feels everything\, spins yarns and takes you to the heart of American characters”\n-WMOT — Best of AmericanaFest 2022 \n  \nAdda Boyd\nSpearfish up-and-comer Adda Boyd continues to make a name for herself as a confident new voice in neo-traditional country. Adda’s fresh off a solo performance at the world-famous Ruffed Up Duck Saloon in Laramie\, part of the first-ever Western AF Music Showcase. \n\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFNM9F9-ypo” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjMqgWvlt-0″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

Main Street\, Spearfish. \n \nCraig Karges is truly extraordinary! The “extraordinist” is an award-winning entertainer\, a nationally recognized speaker\, and an author. Karges has made over five thousand appearances in 27 countries on four continents and in all fifty states. \nCraig Karges combines the art of magic with the science of psychology and the power of intuition to create the impression that nothing is impossible. Tables float\, minds are read\, metal bends and your imagination is challenged because you won’t believe your eyes! Dennis Miller\, comedian\, and media personality\, put it this way after seeing Karges perform\, “This weirds me out!” \nAlthough he does not claim to have supernatural powers or perform as a psychic or magician\, the effects Craig Karges creates on stage are uncanny. Blindfolded\, he calls off serial numbers on borrowed currency. Unspoken thoughts are revealed. Predictions are made and verified. Borrowed finger rings are linked into a chain. Objects move seemingly by the power of the mind. A table dances and flies into the air. \nCraig Karges is unique’ what he does on stage is totally different\, and there is no other show like “Experience the Extraordinary!” \nAudiences may be mystified when it comes to understanding how Craig Karges accomplishes what he does on stage but his popularity is no mystery at all. \nCraig Karges has made over 40 national television appearances. You’ve seen him on The Tonight Show as well as CNN\, Fox News Channel\, CNBC\, E! Entertainment Television\, Lifetime Television\, Wisdom Television\, and even SOAPnet! The extraordinist has starred in two\, one-hour television specials. The sheer number and diversity of Karges’ television appearances are indicative of his widespread popularity. \nPerformance\, the international touring talent weekly\, named Craig Karges’ touring show\, Experience the Extraordinary\, one of the top five\, variety/family shows in North America. Karges was in good company as the list also included the likes of illusionist David Copperfield and Disney on Ice. Performance magazine called the extraordinist’s performance “The next era in mystery entertainment.” American Entertainment Magazine named him one of the top five variety entertainers on the corporate circuit. \nFrom Sardinia to Singapore and from Cancun to Cairo\, Craig Karges’ performing schedule has taken him around the world\, appearing at corporate events\, theatres\, universities and casino showrooms. “No matter where I perform\, I try to make my audiences feel they are a part of something they have never experienced before and hopefully will never forget. My goal is to entertain my audiences through the creation of mystery and to open their minds to unlimited possibilities\,” says Karges.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, September 13 at noon in the Matthews Theater with speakers from Black Hills Paranormal Investigations. \n“An Afternoon with Black Hills Paranormal Investigations”: The members of Black Hills Paranormal Investigations will speak on the paranormal; things they have come across at various locations; and what they discovered during their recent investigation of the Matthews Opera House. Is the Matthews haunted? If so\, by whom and does someone still linger there? \n\nAbout Black Hills Paranormal Investigations…\n\nBHPI was founded in 2007 and is proud to serve the Black Hills and its surrounding communities. Since their founding\, they have grown into a professional and trusted team of paranormal researchers. In the beginning\, they set out believing that to be taken as a serious paranormal investigations team it was imperative that they set high standards for themselves and their practices. Their guiding principles–critical thinking\, common sense\, continuing education\, and a healthy dose of skepticism–have served their clients well. Every aspect of their investigations are free of charge. For more about the investigators and their services\, visit bhparanormal.com \n\n  \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n

SUMMARY:Theater on the Run 2023
DESCRIPTION:Theater on the Run is back for its twelfth year on Saturdays\, September 9 & 16 at 6 pm! \nFour downtown Spearfish businesses open their doors to a group of our actors who will perform a playlet in each location. After each show\, the audience moves to a new location to enjoy another performance. Completing the “run”\, the evening ends with a performance in the Matthews theater for all 104 ticketholders. Refreshments are available at each venue. \nThe play and cast remain the same on both dates\, just the downtown locations change. Tickets are limited to 26 seats per venue\, for a total of 104 tickets each weekend. \nOn both evenings\, The Matthews Opera House theater will be the location of the finale performance. \nA Sunday matinee performance is also scheduled. This special showing will “run in place” with all shows presented in the Matthews theater and snacks provided in the fireplace room. \nHow does Theater on the Run work?\nTheater on the Run begins with four different groups of theater patrons–26 people each– starting at a pre-determined location. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production. This will continue until the finale\, where all four groups will meet in the Matthews Opera House for the last show. Each venue will have beverages for sale\, with some offering adult and some offering non-adult beverages. Appetizers are included in the cost of the ticket. \nTheater on the Run is a fun and unique way to experience theater which has made it one of our most popular events each year. A limited amount of tickets are available and the event has quickly sold out since 2012\, so make sure to get them early. This event is one you won’t want to miss! Tickets are only sold in The Matthews art gallery or online and must be purchased in advance. The participating venues are NOT selling tickets. \nA sporting chance…\nTicket sales begin on Tuesday\, August 15 at 10 a.m. This will be strictly enforced.\nTickets sell out quickly and we want to ensure every patron has an equal opportunity to get theirs. Any attempts to purchase tickets prior to August 15 at 10 am will not be honored. \nA little advice for groups…\nIf attending the performance with a group\, we recommend purchasing all tickets in one transaction to ensure seats are available to accommodate the entire party. If you must purchase them separately\, please pay careful attention to your “starting” location to make sure the whole party “starts their run” in the same venue. Due to seating limitations\, we are unable to make changes once your purchase is complete. \nOnly 104 tickets per evening!\nWe have only 104 tickets each for Sept. 9 and 16\, for a total of 208 tickets. All tickets are $40. The ticket includes the show and appetizers that are provided by all of the participating downtown venues. Drinks are available at many of the venues\, for an addition cost (proceeds go directly to the venue). \nThe plays and directors\n“Accused of Comedy\,” by Carl L. Williams\nDirected by Jon Steven Wiley\nAfter comedy has been outlawed in society\, two bottom-of-the-barrel comics face trial for committing comedy.  They discover humor is no laughing matter. \n“Matterhorn\,” by Rich Orloff\nDirected by Matt Woodard\nStuck in a never-ending line at Disneyland\, a husband and wife are just on the verge of killing each other — until they devise a novel solution to their marital woes… \n“Complaint Department and Lemonade\,” by Kamron Klitgaard\nDirected by Tytus Spivey\nIn this rapid succession of hysterical grievances\, the complaint department takes on everything from Oreo icing to kleptomania and from songs stuck in the head to the price of cheese and on and on and on.  Could there be a glimmer of hope for anyone in charge of a complaint department? \n“Pier #70\,” by Grant Binkleman\nDirected by Max Merchen\nBased on a true story. This retelling is mostly accurate…except when it’s not. \n“A Tale of Two Spectators\,” by Peter Manos\nDirected by CA Dougherty\nIn a park\, a man and a woman secretly watch their respective spouses carry on an affair. As time goes on we realize they have been meeting like this to watch their spouses for quite some time and have even developed something of a bond with each other\, despite their predicament. And perhaps they have discovered a little more about themselves and their lives\, as well. \nThe “Run”\nSept. 9 play locations are:\nGood Earth Natural Foods: “Accused of Comedy”\nSt. Vincent De Paul: “A Tale of Two Spectators”\nOriginal Spearfish Breakfast House: “Complaint Department and Lemonade”\nMatthews Opera House Gallery: “Matterhorn”\nFinale: The Matthews Opera House Theater: “Pier #70” \nSept. 16 play locations are: \nStudio 621: “Accused of Comedy”\nBlackbird Espresso: “A Tale of Two Spectators”\nCommon Grounds: “Complaint Department and Lemonade”\nMatthews Opera House Gallery: “Matterhorn”\nFinale: The Matthews Opera House Theater: “Pier #70” \nTickets go on sale August 15\nTickets go on sale at 10 am\, Tuesday\, Aug. 15. SUMMARY:Nick Shoulders with Dean Johnson
DESCRIPTION:We’re having a hootenanny! \n\nNick Shoulders\nBest Western Tour\nHere to put the “Try” in Country\nSaturday\, August 26\nDoors: 7 pm | Show: 8 pm \nWielding an ethereal croon and masterful whistle crafted from a lifetime chasing lizards through the Ozark hills\, Nick Shoulders is a living link to roots of country music with a penchant for the absurd. Combining his family’s deep ties to regional traditional singing with his years of playing to crowded street corners\, Nick has sought to forge a hybridized form of raucously clever country music; born of forgotten rocky hollers and bred to confront the tensions of the 21st century South. As evidenced by his surreal album art and anachronistic songwriting\, Nick’s creative output is steeped in the complicated history of his beloved home of rural Arkansas\, but crafted as a conscious rebuke of country music’s blind allegiance to historical seats of power and repression. With a kind word and a mean yodel\, Nick hopes to put the ‘Try’ in country. \nDean Johnson\nFor over ten years\, Dean Johnson’s rustic tenor and simply strummed acoustic guitar have been perking up ears around the PNW and beyond. Dean has gradually built a devoted fan base — strictly through live performances — singing existential cowboy waltzes\, ballads about wishing one could find a way out of heaven\, honest confessionals\, and other heartbreakers from a unique perspective. His first album\, Nothing for Me\, Please\, was released on May 5th\, 2023\, on Mama BirdRecording Co. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmAwFPqHTe0″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I7ME1oacMA” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_8fvDPw-IM” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UnB-Y8_20w” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n

SUMMARY:Getting Our Acts Together
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews is excited to bring you a special night of theater: “Getting Our Acts Together: A Night of Northern Hills One Acts”! This special performance will be hosted at the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center on Friday\, August 25 at 7 pm. \nAdditional performances will be held at the Belle Fourche Rec Center Auditorium on Saturday\, August 26 at 7 pm and at the Historic Homestake Opera House on Sunday\, August 27 at 2 pm. \n\n\nThe performance\, aptly named for the collaboration between the Matthews Opera House\, Homestake Theater Works\, and the Belle Fourche Area Community Theater\, will feature three one-act plays presented by three separate directors and casts. Each of the shows will be around 30 to 45 minutes long\, to create a full evening of entertainment. \nPurchase tickets for the Matthews Opera House performance on Friday\, August 25 at 7 pm \nPurchase tickets for the Belle Fourche Community Theater performance on Saturday\, August 26 at 7 pm \nPurchase tickets for the Homestake Opera House performance on Sunday\, August 27 at 2 pm \nAbout the Shows…\n“Talent Show Fail”\nwritten by Iam McWethy and Carrie McCrossen \nThe town of Holly Springs has terrible roads\, and the citizens are counting on the money raised from this year’s talent show to fix them. Unfortunately\, the one guy who has a talent wants to do taxes onstage this year. As the host\, Tina is determined the show must go on\, even as duets are being hastily converted to solos\, angsty teens are reading upsetting poetry and everyone’s being hounded by a heckler. Will the town of Holly Springs get their act together or are they doomed to a future of potholes and unrehearsed roller-skating? Find out in this warm and winning community comedy! \n“Couch Potato”\nwritten by Patrick Gabridge \nEric is the ultimate slacker\, but his goal of remaining motionless in front of the TV is in serious jeopardy. His sister and fiance move out and leave him behind in the apartment\, and the two newlyweds moving in aren’t keen to share their space with a complete stranger. Can Eric use his wits to stay rooted\, or is he about to be yanked from his chosen resting place? A fast-paced comedy of inertia. \n“Superhero Sanitarium”\nwritten by Scott Haan \nLois Lancaster is a big-city journalist writing about the current state of mental health facilities. Her research takes her to a hospital populated with a unique group of quirky inmates who imagine they are crime-fighting superheroes. Speed Freak thinks he can run at incredible speeds\, while enthusiastic Dim Bulb thinks he has the ability to turn off lights with his brain. Mental thinks she can read minds\, despite being prone to sudden outbursts of bizarre non-sequiturs. Kevin\, much less quirky and flamboyant than the other inmates\, doesn’t embarrass himself with a ridiculous code name or costume…at least\, not initially. Dr. Gail Eisner appears to be a kindly hospital administrator\, a steady influence needed to effectively run a madhouse like this one. At first\, Lois finds their elaborate superhero fantasies to be an entertaining diversion\, the wild delusions of unstable minds\, until something unusual happens that makes her wonder….

Steep Canyon Rangers have been on a journey that is uniquely their own. The band started in college at UNC-Chapel Hill\, then dove head first into bluegrass in its most traditional form\, and over the years has risen to the top of the bluegrass genre headlining top festivals such as Merlefest and Grey Fox Bluegrass. Only to then be discovered by Steve Martin\, famous actor and banjo player. Martin has taken the Rangers on over a decade-long tour introducing them to hundreds of thousands of new fans and giving them prime-time TV exposure. This has helped SCR become the most recognizable modern name in bluegrass music. The band has continued to tour extensively on their own\, without Martin\, and has expanded their genre into country\, jam\, and Americana. The Rangers are big players in the bluegrass/country and Americana scene today. They are often compared to predecessors The Band\, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, and the modern Zac Brown Band. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ehueG2TQO0&t=9s” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n

SUMMARY:Jeffrey Martin and Anna Tivel
DESCRIPTION:We’re having a hootenanny! \n\nJeffrey Martin and Anna Tivel\nSaturday\, July 29\nDoors: 7 pm | Showtime: 8 pm \n \nJeffrey Martin\nPortland\, Oregon’s Jeffrey Martin is a minister’s son who can build a house with his bare hands and holds a master’s degree in English. He worked his way through school as a carpenter\, then\, following graduation\, spent four years teaching high school. \nIt was during that time that his career as a songwriter came into bloom. Struggling to strike a balance between his increasingly rigorous Northwest/West Coast touring and his efforts to get teenagers to love words as much as he did\, Martin found himself in the tricky position of having to choose between his two passions. \nMuch to the delight of his fans\, music won the day. Now\, with three intensely lyric-driven albums under his belt\, two of which were released on the Portland indie-label\, Fluff & Gravy Records\, Martin has developed a loyal and growing audience\, both domestically and abroad. Prior to the halting effects that a global pandemic placed on his ability to do so\, Martin kept a restless touring schedule. It’s taken him on several laps around the U.S. and Europe and landed him on stages with luminaries from the genre including Courtney Marie Andrews\, Joe Pug\, Gregory Alan Isakov\, Jeffrey Foucault\, Sean Hayes\, Peter Mulvey\, Amanda Shires\, Colter Wall\, Ruth Moody\, Caitlin Canty\, and others. \nJeffrey Martin writes music that probes the depths of the human experience and doesn’t shy away from its darkest corners. His songs can feel like short stories from literary giants like Steinbeck\, Burroughs\, or Cormac McCarthy and possess a raw intensity that comes from seeing his subjects up close. All the struggle\, hurt\, strife\, and heartbreak that comes from living in this world are laid bare and unvarnished\, yet somehow\, Martin manages to mine and make space for what beauty remains. \nPresently\, Jeffrey Martin is writing for his fourth full-length album at a deliberative pace and making plans to enter the studio to record this winter. He’s recently signed with Tommy Alexander of the Wassermann Agency and has returned to the road for an extended 52-date tour of the US and Canada. An extensive summer tour originally planned for 2020 is now scheduled for 2022 and will include stops in the U.K.\, Netherlands\, Sweden\, Denmark\, Belgium\, and Ireland. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6YrbUog_SM&t=7s” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \nAnna Tivel\nOregon-based songwriter Anna Tivel’s newest album Outsiders starts with a lens so wide that we have left the planet to look back from a great distance at the turmoil and beauty of our shared humanity. From there\, the lens pulls close and unfolds in a gripping collection of stories so often ignored. Tivel’s flawed and honest characters move through a landscape of hurt and loss\, of small triumph and big love. In 11 songs full of recognition\, veracity and hope\, Tivel’s watchful and empathetic eye details the undeniable ache of living. \nOutsiders\, look up / The night is dark but brilliant and it turns out we are not so different \nRecorded almost entirely live to tape in Rock Island\, IL with producer and multi-instrumentalist Shane Leonard and engineer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver\, Sufjan Stevens)\, the album is a truly collaborative exploration. Tivel gathered the same vibrant group of friends from her acclaimed record\, The Question\, which NPR heralded as “one of the most ambitious folk records of 2019.” \nThe track “Black Umbrella” is a winding story that follows a small-town robbery and a bystander who tries to help only to fall under the weight of misconception and old\, broken systems. “It’s a song about all the ways we fail to really see each other\,” Tivel shares\, “about poverty and desperation\, race and power\, history\, opportunity\, and otherness.” \nThroughout her work\, Tivel has emphasized storytelling and this album is no exception\, building on the strength of her ability to observe and reflect with a clear-eyed empathy. Inspired by authors from Steinbeck to Morrison\, Didion to Dubus\, she imbues her songs with attentive detail and a dreamlike quality that leaves the ordinary feeling both palpable and poetic. “Tivel’s characters are common but unforgettable\,” NPR’s Ann Powers writes\, “Her images linger\, and become populated with the energy of the real.” \nOutsiders was released by Mama Bird Recording Co. on August 19th\, 2022. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjEabpUkGRo” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]
