SUMMARY:JAM-uary with The Runaway Grooms
DESCRIPTION:JAM-uary\nThe Runaway Grooms\nShowtime:\nJanuary 19 at 7 pm\nBox Office: 6 pm | House Opens: 6:30 pm \nAdvance tickets: $15 General Admission for a single show or\nuse the link to get the JAM-uary Bundle: $50 for 4-show package\nDay of Show: $20\nTickets may be purchased online\, by phone at (605) 642-7973\, or by visiting the Matthews Gallery at 612 N. The entire concert series can also be purchased for a discounted price of $50! \nJoin us Friday\, January 19 at 7 pm for The Runaway Grooms! \n“Recorded on the road at Paloma Sound Studios in Memphis\, Tennessee\, with former Ardent Studio engineer Jeremy Horn\, the Grooms’ third LP marks the band’s return to more of an American roots rock songwriting style\, all while keeping one foot in the tight-knit jam band circle from which they emerged. Equally inspired by jazz-fusion exploration from the likes of Steely Dan\, Atlanta Rhythm Section\, and Yes\, and the guitar-driven prowess of Allman Brothers Band\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and Grateful Dead\, This Road dives in and out of grooves and moods\, turning on a dime\, but always focusing on what the band sees as the most important aspect; the song. Oh\, and keeping the crowd on their dancing feet. In addition to telling stories and gleaning wisdom from life\, love\, and struggle\, This Road captures an array of emotions and moods drawn from the dramatic narrative of living on the road in a touring band.” \n– Grateful Web \n— https://www.gratefulweb.com/articles/runaway-grooms-announce-their-third-genre-melding-release-road \nNot only do we have an incredible lineup of JAM-uary performers\, Crow Peak Brewery is on-site to keep the libations flowing! \nTicket sales help benefit local nonprofit organizations. \nListen Now…\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcqtQk__KEA” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, January 10 at noon in the Matthews Theater as Paul Higbee presents a fascinating discussion about the 1943 Spearfish Chinook wind. \nThe temperature leaped 49 degrees in two minutes\, shattering windows throughout town and setting a world record that still stands.  Though mostly associated with Spearfish\, the chinook affected other towns\, too\, and was well-documented by the U.S Weather Service and Montana-Dakota Utilities.\nAbout Paul Higbee…\nPaul Higbee has been South Dakota Magazine’s West River contributing editor and columnist since 1991\, and is the author of books published by the South Dakota State Historical Society and the Center for Western Studies. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n

These “jams” are set aside for string instrument players who want to share songs\, make new friends\, and enjoy a casual afternoon of string band music. They are perfect for musicians who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting; those who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; those who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; and\, people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable leading a song. \nEach session opens the floor for musicians to lead their favorite bluegrass tunes and folk music\, backed up by the other pickers in the gathering. Simple tunes are always popular!  ALL are welcome to join the circle for an afternoon of playing classic grass and folk favorites. \n

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series: Tim Velder
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, November 8 at noon in the Matthews Theater as Tim Velder presents “Who Shot Father Belknap and Why?” \nFather Arthur Belknap was a Catholic priest who served the northern Hills communities of Spearfish and Lead from 1916 through 1921. His service was cut short in late October 1921 when he was murdered in the street. This murder remains unsolved\, which has allowed a variety of theories to arise about the motive for the murder. Velder will examine some of those theories as well as highlight the brief career of this dedicated priest. \nAbout Tim Velder…\nTim Velder is a northern Black Hills native and amateur researcher of history. He graduated from Newell High School and Black Hills State University and spent more than 20 years covering news events for northern Hills newspapers and the Rapid City Journal. Since 2011\, he has been a marketing and communications specialist for the northeast Wyoming electric cooperative Powder River Energy. He lives in Sundance\, Wyoming\, with his wife Gerri and has three grown children. Tim is also vice-president of the West River History Conference which holds annual history events focused on local history. \n
