SUMMARY:Getting Our Acts Together 2024
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n“The Staged Murder”. \nShots are heard and a body is found when the officers arrived at the theater to investigate the tragic event – or is it a comedy of errors as they find themselves upstaged by a variety of suspects who take them on a musical trail to the final curtain.

SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: THEATER ON THE RUN & GETTING OUR ACTS TOGETHER 2024
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Theater at the Matthews is heating up and we want you to be a part of it! \nWHAT: Auditions for Theater on the Run & Getting Our Acts Together \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House\, 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish \nWHEN:  July 24 & 25\, 6-8 pm Rehearsals Begin the Following Week \nWHY: Community\, Connection\, and Creativity? Why NOT? \nHOW: No experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nTHE SHOWS THAT WILL HAVE US ON OUR TOES (LITERALLY)\nWhat exactly is Theater on the Run (TOTR?): The Matthews is excited to enter the 13th year of Theater on the Run! Think of it as progressive theater. Small groups of theatre patrons–25 people each– start at different locations. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production.\n\n“ALMOST MAIN” by John Cariani Directors: Charlotte Fladmoe\, Matt Woodard\, Cami Dohman\, Lisa Myhre\nA woman carries her heart\, broken into nineteen pieces\, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size\, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags\, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost\, Maine\, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night\, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town\, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end\, begin\, or change beyond recognition\, as strangers become friends\, friends become lovers\, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous\, plain-spoken\, thoughtful\, and sincere\, Almost\, Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love\, each with a compelling couple at its center\, each with its own touch of sorcery. \nTheater on the Run performs Saturday\, September 7 & 14 at 6 pm with a special matinee “running in place” performance on Sunday\, September 15 at 2 pm. \n…Getting Our Acts Together: Great things happen when we unite!\nOnce again\, we’re joining forces with Belle Fourche and Lead community theaters to present “Getting Our Acts Together\,” a night of Northern Hills one-acts! Each community will select and produce its own one-act play. Both shows will then be presented in each community \n“STAGED MURDER” Written and directed by Julie Walkins.\nWhen authorities are called to a theater to investigate gunshots they discover what it means that the show must go on. Getting Our Acts Together performs in Belle Fourche on October 10; Lead-Deadwood on October 11; Sturgis on October 12; and Spearfish on October 13.  \n\n  \n

Main Street\, Spearfish ADULTS $10 YOUTH $5 \n\nHEIGH-HO\, HEIGH-HO OFF TO THEATER CAMP WE GO! \nIt’s been longer than a hot minute since we all sat in front of an extra-large-Uhaul-box-sized television to watch the original “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” but I’m sure we could mostly retell it perfectly. Who has time for that though? Why not have the children of 2024 tell us this tale in a witty and hysterical recall of one of our favorite fairytales? Introducing “Snow White and the Seven Endings”. Come one\, come all\, to witness princes\, pail-faced mirrors\, and seven (slightly) delusional dwarves retell the tale from their own memory. \n  \nWhen the seven forest dwellers reminisce about their recent run-in with a royal runaway\, they each have a different take on how the story unfolds and who the real hero is. But which is the real ending? The only thing they agree about is that the Prince shouldn’t get the credit! Laughter abounds as each of the seven forest dwellers takes their turn sharing their recollection of what happened to Snow White once she came to their cottage. Which will be your favorite? The mysterious “And Then There Were Seven\,” the melodramatic “Perilous Plight of Miss Snow White\,” or the slapstick “Snow Alone – Lost in the Woods”? Naturally\, everyone loves the action-adventure “Spindiana Jones and the Apple of Doom!” There’s also the Shakespearean “Mid-Snow White’s Dream” and the hysterical interpretive dance\, “The Hunt-Cracker\,” along with the classic retelling. \n  \nTHE ACTORS \nGRIMMLY \nCLUMSY \nDARING \nPLUCKY \nSCARLETT \nTWINKLE TOES \nSPINDIANA JONES \nSNOW WHITE \nEVIL QUEEN \nHAG \nMIRROR \nHUNTSMAN \nPRINCE \n\nABOUT FROELICH YOUNG ACTORS GUILD SUMMER THEATER CAMP  \nEach sizzlin’ summer in Spearfish\, The Matthew’s Opera House and Arts Center invites students entering grades 2 through 12 to a camp that encompasses the imagination. Starting the day with Grades 7-12\, the morning is filled with heroics\, humor\, and theater experience  handed-down from our own amazing Matthews Mentors! Then Grades 2-6 take the floor from 1-4pm learning about our super secret theater tricks and being awe-inspired galore! A registration fee of $50 counts towards costumes\, crafting sets and scenery\, and inspirational instruction for three whole weeks of fun. Ask Matthews staff about the option for older kids to work off their registration fee by helping us keep law and order in the Little’s Group for the afternoon session.

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Song Circle
DESCRIPTION:Jam Date: May 11\,2024 at 12:30 pm\nat the Matthews Opera House \n**Please check our facebook page and/or website for event updates\, cancelations\, etc. for the most accurate information on recurring events** \nWhat is a Jam?\nMatthews Opera House & Arts Center is proud to host the Second Saturday Song Circle\, open to bluegrass and old-time folk musicians. These “jams” are set aside for string instrument players who want to share songs\, make new friends\, and enjoy a casual afternoon of string band music. They are perfect for musicians who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting; those who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; those who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; and\, people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable leading a song. \nEach session opens the floor for musicians to lead their favorite bluegrass tunes and folk music\, backed up by the other pickers in the gathering. Simple tunes are always popular!  ALL are welcome to join the circle for an afternoon of playing classic grass and folk favorites. \nSecond Saturday Song Circle is a free event hosted by Matthews Opera House & Arts Center and held in the theater on the second Saturday of each month from 12:30-2:30 pm. Musicians must bring their own instruments.

BRETT WALFISH \nViolist Dr. Brett Walfish\, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Rushmore Music Festival\, is a distinguished figure in the realm of classical music. Known for his expressive and charismatic performances\, Conductor David Effron has praised his warm sound\, describing it as full of a “myriad of colors.” Dr. Walfish has captivated audiences throughout the United States\, Canada\, China\, Ireland\, Italy\, and Israel. Notable venues include the Tel Aviv Opera House\, the National Music Museum\, Carnegie Hall\, and Mount Rushmore. -Rushmoremusicfestival.org/brett-walfish \nDr. Walfish’s commitment to music extends beyond his performances; he is also a dedicated teacher of violin\, viola\, and chamber music. During his time at Indiana University\, he gained valuable insights into string pedagogy from the renowned Mimi Zweig and completed a two-year Suzuki teacher training certification at the School for Strings in New York City. These experiences served as the foundation for establishing the Walfish Music School. As the founder of this school in Rapid City\, Dr. Walfish passionately imparts his musical knowledge through guest masterclasses and private instruction across the United States. His dedication to nurturing talent is evident in the remarkable success of his students\, many of whom have earned placements in prestigious institutions such as the Juilliard School\, New England Conservatory\, Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music\, Manhattan School of Music\, Harvard University\, and Cornell University. Numerous graduates have gone on to secure positions in major symphonies globally. \nDr. Walfish’s membership in the Valencia Baryton Project highlights his dedication to both classical and contemporary repertoire. Through this project\, he champions some of Haydn’s least-known yet most prolific musical output while featuring modern compositions written for the ensemble. These concerts have resonated across the continental United States and Canada\, showcasing Dr. Walfish’s versatility and deep musical insight. \nPassionate about both classical and modern genres\, Dr. Walfish invests significant time delving into the contemporary Tango culture through extensive research and collaboration with leading Tango musicians of our modern era. His Tango performances not only showcase his artistic prowess but also establish connections between Baroque and Classical Historically Informed Performance and the Golden Age of Tango. Dr. Walfish adeptly bridges the gap between scholarly research and live performance by directly engaging with modern-day Tangueros who played alongside legends\, including Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla\, thus enriching and preserving the vibrant heritage of Tango. \nDr. Walfish’s primary mentors include Carol Cole\, Michael Klotz\, Atar Arad\, Martha Katz\, Lawrence Dutton\, and Nicholas Cords\, as well as the Emerson String Quartet. \nDR. KATIE SMIRNOVA \nViolinist Dr. Katie Smirnova is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of the Rushmore Music Festival. Throughout the year\, Dr. Smirnova enjoys performing with local orchestras such as the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra\, as well as touring with the Rushmore Concert Artists. She has previously enjoyed collaborating with organizations such as the National Music Museum in Vermillion SD\, San Diego Ballet\, Stowe Tango Music Festival\, Moscow Ballet\, Bel Cantanti Opera Company\, Hartford Festival Orchestra\, Groupmuse\, among others. In addition to performing with various chamber ensembles in major halls throughout the United States\, Dr. Smirnova places a strong value on outreach and giving back to her community through performance. \nAn avid teacher\, Dr. Smirnova currently maintains a private teaching studio in Rapid City\, SD and Ft. Lauderdale\, FL. Highly interested in child psychology and the early music learning process\, she has studied violin pedagogy with Rebecca Henry at the Peabody Conservatory and completed a two-year long-term Suzuki teacher training certification at the School for Strings in New York City. \nPrevious teachers include Dr. Ann Setzer at the Juilliard School Pre-College Division\, Pamela Frank\, Shmuel Ashkenasi and Daniel Phillips at the Heifetz International Music Institute\, and masterclasses with the members of the Miro\, Brentano\, Brooklyn Rider\, Emerson\, and the Juilliard String Quartets. \n  \n\nABOUT THE BELLMAN BROWN BAG SERIES\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1 pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, March 13 at noon in the Matthews Theater as Sandy Swallow and Scott Simpson present their collaborative projects “Running the Milky Way\,” and “Sister Star.”  In a captivating fusion of visual and auditory artistry\, Oglala Lakota visual artist\, Sandy Swallow\, and songwriter\, Scott Simpson\, both Spearfish\, SD residents\, showcase original music inspired by Swallow’s evocative mixed media pieces. \n“Running the Milky Way” is an homage to the Horse Nation\, making it a resonant piece for anyone who shares a deep appreciation for these majestic creatures. Swallow’s mastery of hand-pulled block printmaking\, infused with Native American symbolism\, sets the stage for this unique musical journey. Composing the poignant lyrics herself\, she explores the spiritual connection to nature\, family\, and the profound interconnection with the Horse Nation. Simpson\, a versatile musician\, serves as the composer\, recording artist\, and producer\, weaving his musical finesse seamlessly with Swallow’s artistic vision.  “Running the Milky Way” reflects the heartbeat of the Lakota Horse Nation\, emphasizing their roles as relatives in this life and beyond.  \n“Sister Star” is the second collaborative project of Oglala Lakota artist Sandy Swallow and Songwriter Scott Simpson. It is an honoring song for Sandy’s older sister Donna who was murdered in 1968\, and a song of action and encouragement for all families of Missing or Murdered Indigenous Women or Men. #MMIW \nAbout the presenters…\nScott Simpson is a songwriter\, poet\, educator and indie music producer who lives in Spearfish Canyon. He’s been songwriting and recording songs since age six or seven\, and since 2000\, has produced and released more than 40 albums (most available on all digital outlets). Scott was a high school and college English teacher and theatre director for many years and completed his Ph.D. in Creative Writing in 1997. After publishing for several years in various poetry publications (including a 2000 nomination for the Pushcart Prize in Poetry)\, he began to transition his writing focus from poetry to songwriting. He has been a Learning Specialist with Rapid City-based Technology & Innovation in Education for more than ten years. During that time\, he co-developed and now co-directs the WoLakota Project which provides resources and training for schools throughout South and North Dakota and elsewhere in the implementation of Native American Essential Understandings and Culturally Responsive Education. A key part of his work is facilitating Circles of Trust in which individuals come together in retreat to engage in respect-filled conversation and personal storytelling. \nInternationally and locally renowned\, Sandy Swallow’s artistic passion began in mid-life\, as she experimented with oils and watercolors while living on a ranch near Pine Ridge. Being self-taught\, Sandy created art capturing her spiritual\nconnection to nature\, home\, and family. Sandy is most well known for her hand-pulled block printmaking. This painstaking medium provides her with the ability to create dramatic pieces saturated with deep earth and pastel colors that evoke traditional Native American symbols and images from the natural world. Her prints convey a soothing\, peaceful quality that enhances any living or workspace. National recognition of her artwork began in 1999\, when she was selected to be the artist for the National American Indian Heritage Poster for the United States Department of Agriculture with her piece “In the Eye of a Feather.”.10\,000 prints were distributed worldwide. In 2007 she was commissioned to provide the artwork for the “USDA Guide to American Indians and Alaska Natives Programs.” Sandy is honored to have displayed her art in many prestigious places such as the Hofstra University\, Hempstead\, NY; the Newberry Library\, Chicago\, IL; and at a traveling exhibit “Through Indian Eyes” for the legacy of Lewis & Clark and to have worked with buyers from as far away as Sweden\, England\, and Germany. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture.
