SUMMARY:"Beyond the Frame" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:This reception will also celebrate 20 years of the Gallery being open!! There will be a ribbon cutting with the chamber of commerce and a free tour of the Matthews.\n“Beyond to Frame” is an innovative new exhibit in the Matthews Gallery developed in partnership with the Black Hills State University Department of Fine Arts. In a traditional gallery experience\, patrons view framed artwork from an appropriate distance. However\, in “Beyond the Frame\,” artworks are hands-on pieces that visitors are encouraged to interact with. \nWe invite you to explore the space and installations with a mindset of curiosity as well as experience pieces from the perspective of someone who may be differently-abled. \nBy immersing ourselves in how we experience the world and how we interact with it\, we can create experiences that are more accessible to everyone regardless of abilities. By simply acknowledging a reality different than our own we can begin to create one that is equitable to all. \nArtwork will take on a variety of different forms that allow you to visualize sound waves\, experiment with color spectrums\, and immerse yourself in tactile experiences. In this show\, you can manipulate shadow puppets\, explore texture-driven exhibits\, and make your own art with “tall and small” art experiences.  \nIn addition to a focus on accessible art pieces\, work in this exhibit also revolves around the accessibility of art making. Oftentimes people barricade themselves behind the impression of “I’m not an artist.” They limit themselves to common art skills such as drawing\, painting\, or sculpting using specific tools and mediums. Removing those barriers of expectations and providing unique tools and perspectives opens a pathway into the idea that “art is for everyone.” At the Matthews\, we strive to foster creativity in whatever form it can be found and share those experiences with our community. \n“Beyond the Frame” will also feature works created by students from Canyon Hills Center as part of a community outreach program fostered by Lutheran Social Services and the Matthews. DESCRIPTION:It is a grand and bittersweet thing! \n\n\nInterim Executive Director\, Joanna Mechaley handed over the keys to the castle to our new Executive Director\, Heath Johnson! \nJoanna stepped into this role and navigated it with amazing passion and style. Heath brings forth new perspectives and innovations. Both of which are shown in the letters addressed to us all that you can read below…\n\n\n \nTonight I threw away an ice cream cake that had been in my freezer for the better part of a year. Happily proclaiming “Happy Birthday\, Jason!” (ummm…who’s Jason and why do I have his cake?)\, this festive treat had\, over time\, deteriorated into a menacing tooth-chipper that smugly squatted in my icebox\, stealing precious space from the frozen pizza\, rump roast\, and Snickers bars that longed to rise to the top shelf.  \nAs I ruminated about Jason and his misplaced leftovers\, it suddenly struck me that all good things really do come to an end. Okay\, so\, I’m pretty sure the party was Ah-Mazing while it lasted and I bet I could have powered through that frozen confection like it owed me money. But\, really\, it was time to move on.  \nMuch like my position as your Interim Executive Director of the Matthews Opera House. \nIt has been one of my greatest privileges to serve in this capacity at the Matthews. This institution has been a central part of my life for nearly 30 years. Through it I have found a community\, developed skills I never knew I had\, and grown in confidence and abilities in ways I never imagined. I credit the people\, the organization\, and the opportunities the Matthews has provided.  \nAnd\, with that in mind\, I am so excited to announce that my interim has come to an end and the Matthews is “rising to the top shelf” with our new Executive Director\, Heath Johnson! \nHeath is a familiar face to many of you\, myself included. I’ve listened to this cat perform around the Hills for the last decade and\, most recently\, been witness to his stellar efforts at the helm of the Queen City Songwriters. He’s warm\, he’s savvy\, and he’s eager to continue our forward momentum. At 4\,850 feet deep\, SURF is the deepest underground laboratory in the United States and is located in the former Homestake Gold Mine. The facility houses experiments in physics\, biology\, geology\, and engineering. The SURF AiR program leverages the unique characteristics of SURF and the science experiments it hosts to create awareness and encourage interdisciplinary work. This residency is modeled after various programs offered by government\, science and industry including the National Park Service\, CERN\, and Fermilab. \nAs we carry-on through the lunch hour we hope you enjoy a comfortable seat at our table and the splendor of your surroundings. An internationally exhibiting artist and lecturer\, her work has been seen at the Cynthia Broan Gallery in New York City\, the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei\, Taiwan and the Siena Art Institute in Siena\, Italy. Most recently her work was exhibited through Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia\, Illinois\, the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor\, Michigan and the University of Zurich Science Pavilion in Zurich\, Switzerland. In 2020 she became the first ever Artist-in-Residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead\, South Dakota. \n\nABOUT THE BELLMAN BROWN BAG SERIES\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Matthews Theater on Thursday\, October 31st from 6-8:30 PM for a free\, 18+\, figure drawing workshop. This fun workshop for adults will feature drawing from live\, costumed models in a historic theater atmosphere! \nBHSU Art Professor Desy Schoenewies will provide drawing demos. Participants are encouraged to bring their own art supplies. No experience is necessary to participate in this event. Artists of all abilities–from curious beginners to students and professionals–are encouraged to participate. \nThis 18+ event will feature music and adult beverages for sale for participants 21+. Halloween costumes are optional\, but encouraged!  \nThis event is free. A free-will donation is suggested but not required. Please join us at the Matthews on Sunday\, October 20 at 2 pm to celebrate this honor with a free reception offering refreshments\, a little history\, and an informal presentation of the playwright’s work. \nAbout Rand Higbee…\nOriginally from Spearfish\, South Dakota\, Rand Higbee obtained a Theatre degree from South Dakota State University and a Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas. While at UNLV his first full-length play\, Sir Isaac’s Duel\, was named as an alternate to the National American College Theatre Festival held at the Kennedy Center. \nRand first attended the Valdez Theatre Conference in 2006 and has become a regular ever since. In recent years\, most of his published and produced plays underwent the developmental process in Valdez before being produced elsewhere. A few career highlights: His short play Next! has become one of the most often performed high school one-acts in the country. He won a Wisconsin Wrights award for his superhero play The Lightning Bug. The debut production of his full-length A Girl Named Destiny at the Venus Theater in Laurel\, Maryland\, was named one of the best plays of the year by DC Metro Theatre Arts. Rand is also the author of Kid Dakota and Plays from the Valdez Theatre Conference. He is one of Alaska’s most produced writers of the past two decades. \n\nHis plays are mostly family friendly\, with wildly engaging plots and distinct characters who all have opportunities for actors to shine. They’re fun\, always\, and funny\, always. They invariably have a good heart and wryly positive messages\, tinged with a little bemused cynicism about the human condition.\n– Dawson Moore\nCoordinator\, Valdez Theatre Conference \n\nIn his own words…\nI was lucky to grow up in Spearfish\, South Dakota. My family had lived in larger cities when I was very young: St. Paul\, Minnesota and Reno\, Nevada. Little Spearfish\, however\, seemed to be the right size to me. Small\, friendly\, surrounded by the Black Hills\, I would say that if Spearfish didn’t have it then you probably didn’t need it. \nOne thing Spearfish did have was a college. My Dad taught there and he and my Mom would take my brothers Paul\, Scott\, and me (our little sister Susan too\, but she came along later) to all of the theatre productions. I learned at an early age that seeing a movie might be fun\, but seeing the action live on stage was magic. I don’t even remember when or where\, but sometime in my single digit years I saw a production of Harvey. That sold me. Magic. \nReading through Plays from the Valdez Theatre Conference you will see what else entertained me while growing up in Spearfish: Baseball. (The Last Ballgame.) Late night\, bad science fiction movies. (The Head That Wouldn’t Die and Shaula: Queen of the Universe.) Superheroes. (The Lightning Bug.) TV sitcoms. (At Home With the Clarks.) Comedians. (Born a Clown.) My pets. (The Feral Child.) \nAfter becoming familiar with my comedies people inevitably ask me if I write dramas as well. I have in the past. (The Last Ballgame I consider to be the last non-comedy I have ever written.) However\, I’ve been around this business long enough to realize you have to play to your strengths. Maya Angelou said\, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said\, people will forget what you did\, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I believe that if I left this Earth tomorrow people would remember me by saying that I made them laugh. What more could I ask?

Both groups find themselves in a forest inhabited by fairies who manipulate the humans and are engaged in their own domestic intrigue. Why NOT? \nHOW:  How does Theater on the Run (TOTR) work? \n TOTR is a fun and unique way to experience theater which has made it one of our most popular events each year. A limited amount of tickets are available and the event has quickly sold out since 2012\, so make sure to get them early. This event is one you won’t want to miss! Tickets are only sold in The Matthews art gallery or online and must be purchased in advance. The participating venues are NOT selling tickets. \nEach venue will have beverages for sale\, with some offering adult and some offering non-adult beverages. Our art workshops are designed for everyone\, whether you’re a beginner exploring your creative side or an experienced artist looking to refine your skills. Join us for an immersive experience that will ignite your passion for art and help you develop new techniques in a supportive and inspiring environment.  Workshops will be held on the First and Third Saturday of every month at 1 PM running from September through December. DESCRIPTION:A sporting chance: \n         Ticket sales open August 15 at 10 am. This will be strictly enforced. Tickets sell out quickly and we want to ensure every patron has an equal opportunity to get theirs.  \n  \n  A little advice for groups: \n         If attending the performance with a group\, we recommend purchasing all tickets in one transaction to ensure seats are available to accommodate the entire party. If you must purchase them separately\, please pay careful attention to your “starting” location to make sure the whole party “starts their run” in the same venue. Due to seating limitations\, we are unable to make changes once your purchase is complete. \n  \n  Only 104 tickets per evening!\n         We have only 104 tickets each for date for a total of 208 tickets. All tickets are $40. The ticket includes the show and appetizers that are provided by all of the participating downtown venues  Drinks are available at many of the venues\, for an addition cost (proceeds go directly to the venue). \n  \nWHO: Come one\, Come all enjoy our Community this Fall! \nWHAT: Theater on the Run \nWHERE:  Theater on the Run begins in the Matthews Theatre then the four different groups will venture to different locations. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost\, Maine\, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night\, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town\, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end\, begin\, or change beyond recognition\, as strangers become friends\, friends become lovers\, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous\, plain-spoken\, thoughtful\, and sincere\, Almost\, Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love\, each with a compelling couple at its center\, each with its own touch of sorcery. \n  \n\nA SHOW THAT HAS US ON THE GO (LITERALLY)!\nWhat exactly is Theater on the Run (TOTR?): The Matthews is excited to enter the 13th year of Theater on the Run! Think of it as progressive theater. Each community will select and produce its own one-act play. Both shows will then be presented in each community \n“STAGED MURDER” Written and directed by Julie Walkins.\nWhen authorities are called to a theater to investigate gunshots they discover what it means that the show must go on. Read on. \nA full evening of live entertainment starts at 4 pm with Quinlan Valdez. For Quinlan\, music is simply a way of life. His journey began at a young age when started attending live performances and this constant exposure led to an expanding love for live music. After learning the banjo and guitar in his teens\, Quinlan started writing his own songs and making his way as a professional musician. Listeners commonly relate his style to classic and traditional folk music while still realizing his own character. Since 2018\, he has been recording music while performing across Wyoming and neighboring states. \nEnjoy a half hour of classical brilliance with Rushmore Music Festival chamber orchestra at 6 pm. Rushmore Music Festival presents engaging concerts that enrich our quality of life by expanding access to classical music throughout the Black Hills. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, and NPR’s All Songs Considered. Her weekly column\, Little Pasture on the Prairie\, is carried by 19 different print publications\, and she has written and produced seasonal audio ‘postcards’ from her ranch for South Dakota Public Broadcasting and Prairie Public Radio. Her first book\, Accidental Rancher\, was chosen as the Siouxland One Book 2023. Her second book will be released by the South Dakota Historical Society Press in June 2024. \nEliza currently hosts a show celebrating rural art and culture for PBS called ‘Wish You Were Here with Eliza Blue\,’ and she is the director of the Kithship Collective\, an organization devoted to innovative\, ecosystem-specific storytelling. \n  \n \nJON BAKKEN\nJon Bakken is a classical cellist\, jazz bassist\, songwriter\, composer\, and elementary strings teacher from Brookings\, South Dakota. He is also the creator of Tiger Meat\, a zine and website about South Dakotan albums\, which will be collected in hardcover editions the summer of 2024. Jon recently released his debut folk-rock album\, Return to the City of Afterwall and an EP of songs from an upcoming musical theater collaboration with Eliza Blue called The Grass Widow. \n  \n \nNICHOLAS TRANDAHL\nNicholas Trandahl is an award-winning poet\, journalist\, outdoorsman\, and veteran residing in northern Wyoming\, where he currently also serves as mayor of his community. He has had six poetry collections published and has also been featured in numerous literary journals and anthologies. Trandahl has been awarded the Wyoming Writers Milestone Award and has received several nominations for the Pushcart Prize. His most recent poetry collection Purgatory was ranked the number one new release in American Poetry on Amazon. Additionally\, Trandahl works as poetry editor for The Dewdrop literary journal and as a contributor for The Way Back to Ourselves literary journal.

DESCRIPTION:WHO: Matthews actors portray characters from the past to delight you with their life stories. \nWHAT: ACTORS RESURRECT HISTORY IN AN ENGAGING WALKING TOUR \nWHERE: ROSE HILL CEMETERY \nWHEN: June 24 & 25 at 6:30 PM \nWHY: TO ENLIGHTEN AND ENTERTAIN BY ENACTING THE PAST \nHOW: MEET US AT ROSE HILL CEMETERY FOR AN ENJOYABLE VISIT TO OUR HISTORIC PAST \nParticipants should plan to arrive at the cemetery 30 minutes early to allow for parking and walking to the gathering area. Attendants will be available at the gate of the cemetery to assist with directions and parking. From the parking area\, the public will be directed along paved walkways to appropriate\ngravesites for these presentations of historic interest. \n\nTIME TO DIG UP SOME DOWN-RIGHT DRAMATIC TALES \nThe Matthews Opera House is excited to announce the return of the Rose Hill Cemetery Walk. Amidst the stunning hilltop views of Spearfish\, Matthews performers will set the stage outdoors at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish on June 23 and June 24 at 6:30 pm. Actors dressed in period-appropriate costumes will resurrect early settlers graveside\, presenting their personal stories of antics and heroics. Audiences will be entertained by several characters known as “76ers\,” persons who came to the Black Hills during the gold rush\, one of which who unknowingly shared his campfire beans and flapjacks with\nthe legendary Calamity Jane. Patrons will also learn about the first person buried at Rose Hill Cemetery\, meet the retiring blacksmith that became the first Spearfish postmaster\, and listen to “Samson of the Black Hills” tell of his Herculean efforts to complete the large stone barn still standing on Red Water Road.
