SUMMARY:Gallery Reception: "Small Works Big Ideas"
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception for “Small Work & Big Ideas” exhibit in partnership with Early Child Connection’s Mini Masters Program. \nIn the realm of art\, size is no measure of impact\, and neither should age. Small Works\, Big Ideas celebrates the infinite creative potential we all have and packs it into intimate dimensions. This exhibit combines a diverse collection of small-scale creations by artists of all ages. Pablo Picasso famously said\, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”. We are partnering with Early Childhood Connections to explore the natural creativity of small children and invite the “grown-ups” to take inspiration from that by creating smaller pieces of artwork. \nThis exhibition challenges our perceptions of scale\, inviting us to appreciate the artistry in subtlety and find grandeur in the miniature. By focusing on the small\, we are reminded that powerful art is not bound by size but by the heart and intention behind it. The works in this collection prove that even the smallest canvas or artist can carry the weight of big ideas.

SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: HARVEY
DESCRIPTION:WHO: ACTORS \nWHAT: Auditions for HARVEY \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House Theater 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish \nWHEN:  Tuesday\, January 14 and Wednesday\, January 15 from 6-8 pm \nWHY: Because everyone should be able to play pretend \nHOW: No experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nPERFORMANCES: March 14\, 15\, 16\, 18\, 21\, 22\, 23 \n\n\nHarvey\n\n\n\n\nby Mary Chase \nHarvey is a 1944 play by the American playwright Mary Chase. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times\, most notably in a 1950 film starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. \n\nPlot\n\nElwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey – whom Elwood describes as a six foot\, three-and-one-half inch (192 cm) tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister\, Veta Simmons\, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium. When they arrive at the sanitarium\, a comedy of errors ensues. When Veta confesses that she has seen Harvey too\, the young Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood. But when the mistake comes out\, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. \nWhen Elwood shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey\, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood has had a strange influence on the staff\, including sanitarium director Dr. Chumley. Only just before Elwood is to be given an injection that will make him into a “perfectly normal human being\, and you know what bastards they are!” (in the words of a taxi driver who has become involved in the proceedings) does Veta realize that she would rather have Elwood the same as he has always been – carefree and kind – even if it means living with Harvey. \nAvailable Roles\n\nElwood P. Dowd: The central character of the play\, a charming eccentric who’s best friend is Harvey\, an invisible six-foot-tall rabbit.\nDr. William B. Chumley: An esteemed psychiatrist and the head of Chumley’s Rest. He will go to any length to protect the reputation of his sanitarium.\nDr. Lyman Sanderson: A young and highly qualified psychiatrist\, he is infatuated with Nurse Kelly\, though he struggles not to let on.\nWilson: The muscle of Chumley’s Rest who sets his sights on Myrtle Mae Simmons soon after meeting her.\nJudge Omar Gaffney: An old family friend of the Dowds and the family’s lawyer.\nVeta Louise Simmons: Elwood’s younger sister\, she is intent on landing a suitable husband for her daughter Myrtle Mae. She is very concerned about fitting into society and loves her older brother Elwood very much.\nRuth Kelly: Nurse Kelly is sweet and kind and looks for the best in people.\nMyrtle Mae Simmons: Veta’s daughter and Elwood’s niece\, extremely self-centered.\nEthel Chauvenet: An old friend of the family She is an elite member of the town’s social circle that Veta desperately wants Myrtle to break into.\nBetty Chumley: Dr. Chumley’s kind and talkative wife.\nE.J. Lofgren: The cab driver.

SUMMARY:A CHRISTMAS STORY
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Entertainment on your Christmas list this year? Come Here! Sure to be a festive Family fun night! \nWHAT: A CHRISTMAS STORY \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House Theater 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish\n     ADULTS $20;  YOUTH $10 \n\nTHIS IS GOING TO BE ALMOST AS MAGICAL AS A LEG LAMP…\nHumorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother\, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself at Higbee’s Department Store. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here\, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas\, the school bully; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial. \n“A Christmas Story is still … one of the more enchanting ways to be transported to a world beyond our own. Yet it also serves to remind us how lucky we are to live a culturally rich life … and Philip Grecian’s thoughtful stage adaptation preserves the old … references.” —Plain Dealer \n“Classics bloom quickly in modern times … you don’t have to have grown up with 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his ache for an air rifle under the tree to think of A Christmas Story as a Christmas must. And [this] version is just as kindly and just as cockeyed as A Christmas Story is meant to be.” —Orlando Sentinel \n“Grecian’s script retains Shepherd’s wry\, tongue-in-cheek humor.” —Orange County Register \n* Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois. \nAnnouncing the Cast…\nRalph………..Scott Kennedy\nRalphie………..Emerson Quinonez\nThe Old Man……….Casey Hibbert\nMother……….Liz Barbour\nRandy……….R.D. SUMMARY:"Beyond the Frame" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:This reception will also celebrate 20 years of the Gallery being open!! There will be a ribbon cutting with the chamber of commerce and a free tour of the Matthews.\n“Beyond to Frame” is an innovative new exhibit in the Matthews Gallery developed in partnership with the Black Hills State University Department of Fine Arts. In a traditional gallery experience\, patrons view framed artwork from an appropriate distance. However\, in “Beyond the Frame\,” artworks are hands-on pieces that visitors are encouraged to interact with. \nWe invite you to explore the space and installations with a mindset of curiosity as well as experience pieces from the perspective of someone who may be differently-abled. \nBy immersing ourselves in how we experience the world and how we interact with it\, we can create experiences that are more accessible to everyone regardless of abilities. By simply acknowledging a reality different than our own we can begin to create one that is equitable to all. \nArtwork will take on a variety of different forms that allow you to visualize sound waves\, experiment with color spectrums\, and immerse yourself in tactile experiences. In this show\, you can manipulate shadow puppets\, explore texture-driven exhibits\, and make your own art with “tall and small” art experiences.  \nIn addition to a focus on accessible art pieces\, work in this exhibit also revolves around the accessibility of art making. Oftentimes people barricade themselves behind the impression of “I’m not an artist.” They limit themselves to common art skills such as drawing\, painting\, or sculpting using specific tools and mediums. Removing those barriers of expectations and providing unique tools and perspectives opens a pathway into the idea that “art is for everyone.” At the Matthews\, we strive to foster creativity in whatever form it can be found and share those experiences with our community. \n“Beyond the Frame” will also feature works created by students from Canyon Hills Center as part of a community outreach program fostered by Lutheran Social Services and the Matthews. Twice monthly\, artists collaborate with the students to explore art in a wide array of mediums from poetry to collage.  \nThe exhibit opens to the public on November 18 with an opening reception scheduled on Friday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm in the Matthews Gallery. \n\nWe are so grateful to the Sponsors who helped make this experience a reality! \n\nPioneer Bank & Trust\nClarkson Family Foundation\nNational Endowment for the Arts\nArts Midwest\nCity of Spearfish\nSouth Dakota Arts Council\nBlack Hills State University – Department of Fine Arts

SUMMARY:Open House and Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:It is a grand and bittersweet thing! \n\n\nInterim Executive Director\, Joanna Mechaley handed over the keys to the castle to our new Executive Director\, Heath Johnson! \nJoanna stepped into this role and navigated it with amazing passion and style. Heath brings forth new perspectives and innovations. Both of which are shown in the letters addressed to us all that you can read below…\n\n\n \nTonight I threw away an ice cream cake that had been in my freezer for the better part of a year. Happily proclaiming “Happy Birthday\, Jason!” (ummm…who’s Jason and why do I have his cake?)\, this festive treat had\, over time\, deteriorated into a menacing tooth-chipper that smugly squatted in my icebox\, stealing precious space from the frozen pizza\, rump roast\, and Snickers bars that longed to rise to the top shelf.  \nAs I ruminated about Jason and his misplaced leftovers\, it suddenly struck me that all good things really do come to an end. Okay\, so\, I’m pretty sure the party was Ah-Mazing while it lasted and I bet I could have powered through that frozen confection like it owed me money. But\, really\, it was time to move on.  \nMuch like my position as your Interim Executive Director of the Matthews Opera House. \nIt has been one of my greatest privileges to serve in this capacity at the Matthews. This institution has been a central part of my life for nearly 30 years. Through it I have found a community\, developed skills I never knew I had\, and grown in confidence and abilities in ways I never imagined. I credit the people\, the organization\, and the opportunities the Matthews has provided.  \nAnd\, with that in mind\, I am so excited to announce that my interim has come to an end and the Matthews is “rising to the top shelf” with our new Executive Director\, Heath Johnson! \nHeath is a familiar face to many of you\, myself included. I’ve listened to this cat perform around the Hills for the last decade and\, most recently\, been witness to his stellar efforts at the helm of the Queen City Songwriters. He’s warm\, he’s savvy\, and he’s eager to continue our forward momentum. I couldn’t be happier to pass the torch (or\, in this case\, the keys) to Heath and I welcome you to come and meet him on Friday\, November 22 from 3-5pm at our 20th Anniversary Open House and Ribbon Cutting in the Matthews Gallery.  \nMy best to you all and thank you for your continued support of the arts.  \n~ Joanna \n————————————————- \nHello\, everyone! \nI’m Heath Johnson\, and I’m incredibly excited and honored to step into the role of Executive Director at The Matthews Opera House. As a singer-songwriter for over a decade and the founder of Queen City Songwriters\, a non-profit in the area promoting original\, local and regional music\, I’ve been deeply involved in fostering our local music artists here in Spearfish. I’m passionate about building a vibrant arts community where creativity and storytelling can thrive. \nOn a personal note\, I’m a proud father of four\, with another little one due to arrive any day now! Balancing family life with my love for the arts has been a rewarding journey\, and I’m eager to bring that same energy and dedication to The Matthews. \nI truly believe that the future holds great things for the arts in Spearfish and the Black Hills\, and I can’t wait to collaborate with all of you. Together\, we can create something truly special for our community. \nLooking forward to what’s ahead! \nWarmly\,\nHeath Johnson
