SUMMARY:Strait George with JJ Kent & Aces and 8's
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening as JJ Kent and his band\, Aces and 8’s\, pay tribute to the legendary George Strait. Experience the timeless hits that have defined country music\, performed live in the elegant setting of The Matthews Opera House. \nAbout JJ Kent: JJ Kent is a seasoned country artist with a career spanning decades\, blending classic country storytelling with a rich musical legacy. His smooth\, “real country” sound recalls legends like George Strait\, Travis Tritt\, and Willie Nelson\, making him a must-see performer for any true country music fan. \nKent first made waves in the late 1980s when he signed with Brykas Records in Nashville. His debut album produced two chart-topping singles—“Two Cups of Coffee” and “Pathway of a Fool”\, both reaching No. 1 on the country charts in June 1990. His talent was recognized early when he won Male Vocalist of the Year in 1988 from the Wyoming Rocky Mountain Country Music Foundation and again in 1990 from the Major Independent Record Label Association. \nKent later took his music overseas to London\, England\, with Prestige Records\, expanding his country music career internationally before returning to the U.S. in 2009. Back in the States\, he pursued another of his musical passions—the Native American flute. He signed with Spirit Wind Records in New York and went on to win the Coveted Native American Music Awards “Flutist of the Year” (2009)\, as well as earning three nominations for “Artist of the Year.” \nOriginally from Lander\, Wyoming\, Kent found his love for music early\, inspired by country legends like Charley Pride. His passion for performing began in his teenage years\, setting him on the path to a career that has taken him from Nashville to London and back. \nNow\, Kent continues to captivate audiences with his dynamic performances\, blending the timeless classics of country music with his own remarkable journey. Don’t miss this chance to see him live with Aces and 8’s as they pay tribute to the legendary George Strait! \n🎟️ Tickets: \n\nVIP: $40 (signed poster + 2 drink tickets)\nFloor: $35\nBalcony Rail: $30\nBalcony Back: $25\n\nAdd Ons: \n\nSocial Hour at The Original Spearfish Breakfast House: $15\n\nContact Information: \n\nFor questions or more information\, please contact The Matthews at (605) 642-7973 or email us at info@matthewsopera.com.\n\nWe look forward to celebrating the music of George Strait with you!

SUMMARY:Mind Matters - Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is being hosted in partnership with the Lawrence County Coalition to create a show focusing on mental health. \nMental health is an integral part of our well-being\, yet it is often shrouded in stigma\, misunderstanding\, and silence. This exhibit seeks to open a dialogue\, offering a space for reflection\, connection\, and empowerment. Through art\, personal narratives\, and experiences\, we explore the complexities of mental health—shedding light on resilience\, struggle\, healing\, and hope. \nEach piece in this exhibit represents a voice\, a story\, or an emotion—conveying the unseen battles and triumphs that shape our lives. We invite you to engage with these works with an open heart\, to challenge stigma\, and to embrace the importance of mental well-being for all. Our goal is to create a space where we can educate people about the impact of participating in the arts\, and offer resources & tools to our community. \nYou are not alone. Let’s foster understanding\, support\, and change—together.

SUMMARY:HARVEY
DESCRIPTION:WHO: YOU! \nWHAT: Harvey \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House Theater 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish \nWHEN: March 14\, 15 at 7 pm | March 16 at 2 pm | March 18\, 21\, 22 at 7 pm | March 23 at 2 pm \nWHY: To enjoy a performance sure to please! \nHOW: You can purchase tickets online at matthewsopera.com\, call us at 605.642.7973\, or stop into the Gallery at 612 Main Street Spearfish \n\n\nHarvey\n\n\n\n\nby Mary Chase \nHarvey is a 1944 play by the American playwright Mary Chase. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times\, most notably in a 1950 film starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. \n\nPlot\n\nElwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey – whom Elwood describes as a six foot\, three-and-one-half inch (192 cm) tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister\, Veta Simmons\, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium. When they arrive at the sanitarium\, a comedy of errors ensues. When Veta confesses that she has seen Harvey too\, the young Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood. But when the mistake comes out\, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. \nWhen Elwood shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey\, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood has had a strange influence on the staff\, including sanitarium director Dr. Chumley. Only just before Elwood is to be given an injection that will make him into a “perfectly normal human being\, and you know what bastards they are!” (in the words of a taxi driver who has become involved in the proceedings) does Veta realize that she would rather have Elwood the same as he has always been – carefree and kind – even if it means living with Harvey. \n\nCast List\n\n\nRandy Bender – Elwood P. Dowd \nShirlene Joseph – Vita Louise Simmons \nJosephine Julian – Myrtle Mae Simmons \nGavin Cox – Dr. Lyman Sanderson \nSamantha (Sami) O’Neal – Ruth Kelly R.N. \nJim Hoff – Dr. William Chumley \nLynn Pederson – Betty Chumley \nWilbur Newland – Judge Gaffney \nConnie Hubbard – Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet \nOwen K. SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM
DESCRIPTION:WHO: ACTORS \nWHAT: Auditions for A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House Theater 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish \nWHEN:  Thursday\, February 27 and Friday\, February 28 from 6-8 pm \nWHY: Because everyone loves a classic FAIRY tale. \nHOW: No experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nPERFORMANCES: May 9\, 10\, 11\, 13\, 16\, 17\, 18\, 2025 \n\n\nA Midsummer Night’s Dream\n\n\n\n\nby William Shakespeare \nTwo pairs of star-crossed lovers\, a feuding fairy king and his stubborn queen\, a love potion gone awry\, and a troupe of bumbling actors weave a comedy of errors in Shakepeare’s beloved tale. \n\nPlot\n\nRing in the Spring with A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Matthews. In William Shakespeare’s classic comedy\, residents of Athens mix with fairies from a local forest\, with absurd results. Theseus\, Duke of Athens\, is to marry Hippolyta\, queen of the Amazons. In hopes of staging a play for the wedding celebration\, Bottom the Weaver and his friends rehearse in the woods with results that can only be described as hopelessly ridiculous. \nMeanwhile\, four young lovers are in a romantic tangle.
