SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: HARVEY
DESCRIPTION:WHO: ACTORS \nWHAT: Auditions for HARVEY \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House Theater 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish \nWHEN:  Tuesday\, January 14 and Wednesday\, January 15 from 6-8 pm \nWHY: Because everyone should be able to play pretend \nHOW: No experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nPERFORMANCES: March 14\, 15\, 16\, 18\, 21\, 22\, 23 \n\n\nHarvey\n\n\n\n\nby Mary Chase \nHarvey is a 1944 play by the American playwright Mary Chase. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times\, most notably in a 1950 film starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. \n\nPlot\n\nElwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey – whom Elwood describes as a six foot\, three-and-one-half inch (192 cm) tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister\, Veta Simmons\, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium. When they arrive at the sanitarium\, a comedy of errors ensues. When Veta confesses that she has seen Harvey too\, the young Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood. But when the mistake comes out\, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. \nWhen Elwood shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey\, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood has had a strange influence on the staff\, including sanitarium director Dr. Chumley. Only just before Elwood is to be given an injection that will make him into a “perfectly normal human being\, and you know what bastards they are!” (in the words of a taxi driver who has become involved in the proceedings) does Veta realize that she would rather have Elwood the same as he has always been – carefree and kind – even if it means living with Harvey. \nAvailable Roles\n\nElwood P. Dowd: The central character of the play\, a charming eccentric who’s best friend is Harvey\, an invisible six-foot-tall rabbit.\nDr. William B. Chumley: An esteemed psychiatrist and the head of Chumley’s Rest. He will go to any length to protect the reputation of his sanitarium.\nDr. Lyman Sanderson: A young and highly qualified psychiatrist\, he is infatuated with Nurse Kelly\, though he struggles not to let on.\nWilson: The muscle of Chumley’s Rest who sets his sights on Myrtle Mae Simmons soon after meeting her.\nJudge Omar Gaffney: An old family friend of the Dowds and the family’s lawyer.\nVeta Louise Simmons: Elwood’s younger sister\, she is intent on landing a suitable husband for her daughter Myrtle Mae. She is very concerned about fitting into society and loves her older brother Elwood very much.\nRuth Kelly: Nurse Kelly is sweet and kind and looks for the best in people.\nMyrtle Mae Simmons: Veta’s daughter and Elwood’s niece\, extremely self-centered.\nEthel Chauvenet: An old friend of the family She is an elite member of the town’s social circle that Veta desperately wants Myrtle to break into.\nBetty Chumley: Dr. Chumley’s kind and talkative wife.\nE.J. Lofgren: The cab driver.

SUMMARY:A CHRISTMAS STORY: AUDITIONS
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Is being a Ralphie right up your alley? Or maybe you are directing your skills towards the Dad doting on an lustful leg-lamp? We need all the actors to bring the action of this family favorite!  \nWHAT: A CHRISTMAS STORY AUDITIONS  \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House Theater 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish \nWHEN: October 23 & 24 6:00-8:00pm \nWHY: Since boredom gets tongues stuck to poles\, make being part of this show one of your holiday goals!  \nHOW: What to expect:No experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). \nAuditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nPERFORMANCES: “A Christmas Story” performances are scheduled for Friday-Sunday\, December 13-15; Tuesday\, December 17; and Friday-Sunday\, December 20-22 \n\nTHIS IS GOING TO BE ALMOST AS MAGICAL AS A LEG LAMP…\nDirected by Melita Quinonez\, the family favorite created by humorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother\, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself at Higbee’s Department Store. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here\, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas\, the school bully; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial. \n“A Christmas Story is still … one of the more enchanting ways to be transported to a world beyond our own. Yet it also serves to remind us how lucky we are to live a culturally rich life … and Philip Grecian’s thoughtful stage adaptation preserves the old … references.” —Plain Dealer \n“Classics bloom quickly in modern times … you don’t have to have grown up with 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his ache for an air rifle under the tree to think of A Christmas Story as a Christmas must. And [this] version is just as kindly and just as cockeyed as A Christmas Story is meant to be.” —Orlando Sentinel \n“Grecian’s script retains Shepherd’s wry\, tongue-in-cheek humor.” —Orange County Register \n

A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan\, devised with his wife’s help\, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: THEATER ON THE RUN & GETTING OUR ACTS TOGETHER 2024
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Theater at the Matthews is heating up and we want you to be a part of it! \nWHAT: Auditions for Theater on the Run & Getting Our Acts Together \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House\, 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish \nWHEN:  July 24 & 25\, 6-8 pm Rehearsals Begin the Following Week \nWHY: Community\, Connection\, and Creativity? Why NOT? \nHOW: No experience necessary! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nTHE SHOWS THAT WILL HAVE US ON OUR TOES (LITERALLY)\nWhat exactly is Theater on the Run (TOTR?): The Matthews is excited to enter the 13th year of Theater on the Run! Think of it as progressive theater. Small groups of theatre patrons–25 people each– start at different locations. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production.\n\n“ALMOST MAIN” by John Cariani Directors: Charlotte Fladmoe\, Matt Woodard\, Cami Dohman\, Lisa Myhre\nA woman carries her heart\, broken into nineteen pieces\, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size\, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags\, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost\, Maine\, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night\, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town\, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end\, begin\, or change beyond recognition\, as strangers become friends\, friends become lovers\, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous\, plain-spoken\, thoughtful\, and sincere\, Almost\, Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love\, each with a compelling couple at its center\, each with its own touch of sorcery. \nTheater on the Run performs Saturday\, September 7 & 14 at 6 pm with a special matinee “running in place” performance on Sunday\, September 15 at 2 pm. \n…Getting Our Acts Together: Great things happen when we unite!\nOnce again\, we’re joining forces with Belle Fourche and Lead community theaters to present “Getting Our Acts Together\,” a night of Northern Hills one-acts! SUMMARY:Community Theater Audtions
DESCRIPTION:Theater at the Matthews is heating up and we want you to be a part of it! We will be holding open auditions for three different performances on Thursday\, July 21 and July 28 at 6:30 pm in the Matthews Opera House fireplace room. No experience is necessary to audition. All audition pieces will be performed as a “cold read” and will be available at the event. \nTheater on the Run: The Matthews is excited to enter the 11th year of Theater on the Run! What exactly is TOTR? Think of it as progressive theater. Small groups of theatre patrons–25 people each– start at different locations. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production. Shows this season include “Mating Season of Flying Monkeys\,” directed by Max Merchen; “Drugs are Bad\,” directed by Tytus Spivey; “A Timely Maneuver\,” directed by CA Dougherty; “Post-its: Notes on a Marriage\,” directed by Casy Hibbert; and\, “The Blind I\,” directed by Julie Walkins. Performances for this event will be held on September 10 and 17 at 6 pm and September 18 at 2 pm. \nNorthern Hills One Acts: Great things happen when we unite and this year\, for the first time ever\, we’re joining forces with Belle Fourche and Lead community theaters to present Northern Hills One Acts! Each community will select and produce its own one-act play. All three shows will then be presented in each community on October 14 at 7 pm (Lead)\, October 15 at 7 pm (Spearfish)\, and October 16 at 3 pm (Belle Fourche). The title for the Matthews contribution will be announced at auditions and the show will be directed by Tytus Spivey. \nSouthern Hospitality\, written by Hope\, Jones and Wooten and directed by Max Merchen\, is the third and final play in the highly popular trilogy following the antics of the Futrelle sisters–Frankie\, Twink\, Honey Raye and Rhonda Lynn. While many of the roles in this performance will be reprised by actors from the previous two installments\, there are some new characters to cast!  In Southern Hospitality\, the sisters are in trouble again. This time\, their beloved hometown\, Fayro\, Texas\, is in danger of disappearing and it’s up to the sisters to save it from extinction. But their plans to do so quickly go haywire. How the Futrelle sisters and the other citizens of Fayro\, including sweet\, simple\, Raynerd Chisum\, pull together and save their town is a testament to Southern strength and ingenuity—and a recipe for total hilarity. A laugh-out-loud farce and a stand-alone play in its own right\, SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY is the third play in the trilogy that began with Dearly Beloved and continued with Christmas Belles. Performances are scheduled for November 11-13 and 18-20 at 7 pm for Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 pm for the Sunday matinee.

Terrible\, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of Game of Thrones and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy\, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras\, you win or you die. Produced by special arrangement with PLAYSCRIPTS of New York\, NY   \n  \n“Laffin School” | Group B | Actors in grades 2-6 (entering these grades in Fall 2022) Jokes! Jokes! Jokes! It’s the classic situation. A young substitute teacher\, Miss Quackenbush\, turns up at the Little Red Schoolhouse and finds her class is comprised of the dumbest (and funniest) pupils found anywhere. The previous teacher had a nervous breakdown. No wonder! With things like mice in lunch boxes and a student with the measles\, anything more will drive you crazy! Unless the likable but dim-bulbed pupils can pass a simple exam\, they won’t advance to the next grade. Find out why the pupils don’t want to be “promoted” and why Miss Quackenbush has to find some way to get rid of them! Produced by special arrangement with PIONEER DRAMA SERVICE\, INC. of Englewood\, CO

SUMMARY:Auditions: Page to Stage
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Matthews Opera House for auditions for our new community theater experiment\, “Page to Stage!” This unique reader’s theater production will offer opportunities for actors to read from four different scripts and is a perfect opportunity for those new to the stage\, seasoned actors who are short on time but long on ambition\, and anyone who would like to participate in a relaxed\, creative theater experience. \n“Page to Stage” will feature four plays: “Love\, Loss\, and What I Wore\,” directed by Julie Walkins; “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” directed by Joanna Mechaley; “A Gap in Generations\,” directed by Max Merchen; and a new play written and directed by local playwright Charlotte Dougherty\, “I Know What You Did.” Each play is a full-length script. Due to its nature as a Reader’s Theater\, however\, actors will not face the typical rigorous requirements–the rehearsal period will be brief\, there will be minimal movement and no memorization required! \nEach play will perform on scheduled weekends throughout the month of May. \nAuditions will be held simultaneously and community members are invited to try out for one or more of the four productions.  \n“Love\, Loss and What I Wore\,” written by Nora and Delilah Ephron and adapted from the memoir  of the same name by Ilene Beckerman\, will be directed by long-time Matthews thespian\, Julie Walkins. This funny\, compelling script is an intimate collection of stories about women\, clothes and memory covering all the important subjects—mothers\, prom dresses\, mothers\, buying bras\, mothers\, hating purses and why we only wear black. \nJoanna Mechaley will direct “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” by Paul Zindel. This play focuses on a frowzy\, acid-tongued mother who wreaks petty vengeance on everyone around her\, including her two daughters. But her youngest daughter exhibits an intuitive gift for science\, and proves that something beautiful and full of promise can emerge from even the most barren\, afflicted soil. \nOnce again proving that laughter is the best medicine\, Max Merchen will direct “A Gap in Generations\,” by Jerry Blunt. This comedic-farce explodes with belly-laughs as the readers discover a square in old Bologna peopled by types that could have strayed from any of Shakespeare’s classic tales. \nIn addition to nationally published scripts\, “Page to Stage” will also feature the work of a local playwright\, “Dark Secrets\,” written and directed by C.A. Dougherty. In Dougherty’s newest play\, two sisters with a bad case of sibling rivalry find themselves faced with unexpected and sometimes hilarious consequences\, trying to test out the theory that everyone has at least one secret that they don’t want anyone to know. Ever!
