SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: The Importance of Being Earnest
DESCRIPTION:March 30th & 31st @ 5:30pm \nStep into the spotlight and be part of our vibrant arts community in The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. A trivial comedy for serious people. \nNo experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. Algernon\, equally mischievous\, adopts the name Ernest himself to charm Jack’s ward\, Cecily. \nAs their double lives collide\, misunderstandings multiply\, engagements are tested\, and the formidable Lady Bracknell lays down the law. SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: Inspecting Carol
DESCRIPTION:October 14th & 15th @ 6:30pm \nThe Matthews Opera House invites community members to audition for Inspecting Carol\, a hilarious holiday comedy that blends backstage drama with festive cheer. When a struggling theater troupe’s production of A Christmas Carol goes wildly off the rails\, expect miscast roles\, onstage mishaps\, and nonstop laughter. \nNo experience necessary! You will be asked to read with other participants from sections of the script previously selected by the directors. All auditions will be performed as a “cold read” (seeing the script for the first time). Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \nInspecting Carol – Directed by Max Merchen\nInspecting Carol is a backstage holiday comedy by Daniel J. Sullivan that spoofs both A Christmas Carol and the frantic world of community theater. The play follows a struggling theater company preparing for their annual production of Dickens’ classic. Everything goes wrong: actors forget lines\, the set collapses\, egos clash\, and rehearsal spirals out of control. When the troupe mistakes a clueless wannabe actor for a feared National Endowment for the Arts inspector\, panic sets in\, and desperate attempts to impress lead to even more ridiculous disasters. Full of slapstick\, satire\, and seasonal spirit\, Inspecting Carol is a joyful romp that celebrates the magic (and madness) of live theater. \nPerformance Dates\nDecember 12\, 13\, 14\, 16\, 19\, 20\, 21 \n\nFridays & Saturdays • 7:00 pm\nSundays • 2:00 pm | Tuesday • 7:00 pm\n\nAvailable Roles\n\nZorah Bloch: Founding director of The Soapbox Playhouse. In her 40’s. Extremely self-concerned.\nSidney Carlton: In his 60’s. A founding member of the Company. Kind but somewhat addled.\nDorothy Tree Hapgood: His wife. In her 60’s. Recently taken up acting again after a stint in the armed forces. Good natured\, excitable.\nLuther Beauty: A large eleven-year-old. He’s been playing Tiny Tim two years too long. Extremely friendly.\nKevin Emery: A nervous man in the impossible position of managing director. In his 40’s. Afraid of Zorah.\nM.J. (Mary Jane) McMann: In her 40’s. A realist. Auditions are also a great time to express your interest in backstage work\, set building\, lights and all of the other necessary skills that make a show great! Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nPERFORMANCES: March 14\, 15\, 16\, 18\, 21\, 22\, 23 \n\n\nHarvey\n\n\n\n\nby Mary Chase \nHarvey is a 1944 play by the American playwright Mary Chase. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times\, most notably in a 1950 film starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. \n\nPlot\n\nElwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey – whom Elwood describes as a six foot\, three-and-one-half inch (192 cm) tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister\, Veta Simmons\, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium. When they arrive at the sanitarium\, a comedy of errors ensues. When Veta confesses that she has seen Harvey too\, the young Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood. But when the mistake comes out\, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. \nWhen Elwood shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey\, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood has had a strange influence on the staff\, including sanitarium director Dr. Chumley. Only just before Elwood is to be given an injection that will make him into a “perfectly normal human being\, and you know what bastards they are!” (in the words of a taxi driver who has become involved in the proceedings) does Veta realize that she would rather have Elwood the same as he has always been – carefree and kind – even if it means living with Harvey. \nAvailable Roles\n\nElwood P. Dowd: The central character of the play\, a charming eccentric who’s best friend is Harvey\, an invisible six-foot-tall rabbit.\nDr. William B. Chumley: An esteemed psychiatrist and the head of Chumley’s Rest. He will go to any length to protect the reputation of his sanitarium.\nDr. Lyman Sanderson: A young and highly qualified psychiatrist\, he is infatuated with Nurse Kelly\, though he struggles not to let on.\nWilson: The muscle of Chumley’s Rest who sets his sights on Myrtle Mae Simmons soon after meeting her.\nJudge Omar Gaffney: An old family friend of the Dowds and the family’s lawyer.\nVeta Louise Simmons: Elwood’s younger sister\, she is intent on landing a suitable husband for her daughter Myrtle Mae. She is very concerned about fitting into society and loves her older brother Elwood very much.\nRuth Kelly: Nurse Kelly is sweet and kind and looks for the best in people.\nMyrtle Mae Simmons: Veta’s daughter and Elwood’s niece\, extremely self-centered.\nEthel Chauvenet: An old friend of the family She is an elite member of the town’s social circle that Veta desperately wants Myrtle to break into.\nBetty Chumley: Dr. Chumley’s kind and talkative wife.\nE.J. Lofgren: The cab driver.

The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here\, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas\, the school bully; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial. \n“A Christmas Story is still … one of the more enchanting ways to be transported to a world beyond our own. Yet it also serves to remind us how lucky we are to live a culturally rich life … and Philip Grecian’s thoughtful stage adaptation preserves the old … references.” —Plain Dealer \n“Classics bloom quickly in modern times … you don’t have to have grown up with 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his ache for an air rifle under the tree to think of A Christmas Story as a Christmas must. And [this] version is just as kindly and just as cockeyed as A Christmas Story is meant to be.” —Orlando Sentinel \n“Grecian’s script retains Shepherd’s wry\, tongue-in-cheek humor.” —Orange County Register \n

A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. SUMMARY:AUDITIONS: THEATER ON THE RUN & GETTING OUR ACTS TOGETHER 2024
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Theater at the Matthews is heating up and we want you to be a part of it! \nWHAT: Auditions for Theater on the Run & Getting Our Acts Together \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House\, 612 N. Stop by if you have any interest in the action “behind the scenes” and visit with the directors.  \n\nTHE SHOWS THAT WILL HAVE US ON OUR TOES (LITERALLY)\nWhat exactly is Theater on the Run (TOTR?): The Matthews is excited to enter the 13th year of Theater on the Run! Think of it as progressive theater. Small groups of theatre patrons–25 people each– start at different locations. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production.\n\n“ALMOST MAIN” by John Cariani Directors: Charlotte Fladmoe\, Matt Woodard\, Cami Dohman\, Lisa Myhre\nA woman carries her heart\, broken into nineteen pieces\, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size\, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags\, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost\, Maine\, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night\, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town\, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end\, begin\, or change beyond recognition\, as strangers become friends\, friends become lovers\, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous\, plain-spoken\, thoughtful\, and sincere\, Almost\, Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love\, each with a compelling couple at its center\, each with its own touch of sorcery. \nTheater on the Run performs Saturday\, September 7 & 14 at 6 pm with a special matinee “running in place” performance on Sunday\, September 15 at 2 pm. \n…Getting Our Acts Together: Great things happen when we unite!\nOnce again\, we’re joining forces with Belle Fourche and Lead community theaters to present “Getting Our Acts Together\,” a night of Northern Hills one-acts! Each community will select and produce its own one-act play. Both shows will then be presented in each community \n“STAGED MURDER” Written and directed by Julie Walkins.\nWhen authorities are called to a theater to investigate gunshots they discover what it means that the show must go on. Getting Our Acts Together performs in Belle Fourche on October 10; Lead-Deadwood on October 11; Sturgis on October 12; and Spearfish on October 13.  \n\n  \n

All audition pieces will be performed as a “cold read” and will be available at the event. \nTheater on the Run: The Matthews is excited to enter the 11th year of Theater on the Run! What exactly is TOTR? Think of it as progressive theater. Small groups of theatre patrons–25 people each– start at different locations. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production. Shows this season include “Mating Season of Flying Monkeys\,” directed by Max Merchen; “Drugs are Bad\,” directed by Tytus Spivey; “A Timely Maneuver\,” directed by CA Dougherty; “Post-its: Notes on a Marriage\,” directed by Casy Hibbert; and\, “The Blind I\,” directed by Julie Walkins. Performances for this event will be held on September 10 and 17 at 6 pm and September 18 at 2 pm. \nNorthern Hills One Acts: Great things happen when we unite and this year\, for the first time ever\, we’re joining forces with Belle Fourche and Lead community theaters to present Northern Hills One Acts! Each community will select and produce its own one-act play. All three shows will then be presented in each community on October 14 at 7 pm (Lead)\, October 15 at 7 pm (Spearfish)\, and October 16 at 3 pm (Belle Fourche). The title for the Matthews contribution will be announced at auditions and the show will be directed by Tytus Spivey. \nSouthern Hospitality\, written by Hope\, Jones and Wooten and directed by Max Merchen\, is the third and final play in the highly popular trilogy following the antics of the Futrelle sisters–Frankie\, Twink\, Honey Raye and Rhonda Lynn. While many of the roles in this performance will be reprised by actors from the previous two installments\, there are some new characters to cast!  In Southern Hospitality\, the sisters are in trouble again. This time\, their beloved hometown\, Fayro\, Texas\, is in danger of disappearing and it’s up to the sisters to save it from extinction. But their plans to do so quickly go haywire. How the Futrelle sisters and the other citizens of Fayro\, including sweet\, simple\, Raynerd Chisum\, pull together and save their town is a testament to Southern strength and ingenuity—and a recipe for total hilarity. A laugh-out-loud farce and a stand-alone play in its own right\, SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY is the third play in the trilogy that began with Dearly Beloved and continued with Christmas Belles. Performances are scheduled for November 11-13 and 18-20 at 7 pm for Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 pm for the Sunday matinee.
