SUMMARY:Laffin School
DESCRIPTION:The Froelich Young Actors Guild presents a special double feature event: “Game of Tiaras\,” a comedy by Don Zolidis and “Laffin School\,” a comedy by Keith Jackson! Both shows will be performed on Saturday\, June 25 at 7 pm and Sunday\, June 26 at 2 pm. One ticket gains access to both plays. \nAbout the Shows\n“Game of Tiaras” by Don Zolidis\nActors in grades 7-12 \nWhen the aging king of a Magical Kingdom (England) decides to split his empire between his three daughters\, Cinderella\, Belle\, and the Snow Queen (who in no way resembles a copyrighted character)\, terrible tragedy ensues. Terrible\, hilarious tragedy. Combining the gut-wrenching plot twists of Game of Thrones and the soul-numbing despair of Shakespearean tragedy\, this adaptation of King Lear will leave you dying with laughter as the body count mounts. When you play the Game of Tiaras\, you win or you die. \nProduced by special arrangement with PLAYSCRIPTS of New York\, NY \n“Laffin School” by Keith Jackson\nActors in grades 2-6 \nJokes! Jokes! Jokes! It’s the classic situation. A young substitute teacher\, Miss Quackenbush\, turns up at the Little Red Schoolhouse and finds her class is comprised of the dumbest (and funniest) pupils found anywhere. The previous teacher had a nervous breakdown. No wonder! With things like mice in lunch boxes and a student with the measles\, anything more will drive you crazy! Unless the likable but dim-bulbed pupils can pass a simple exam\, they won’t advance to the next grade. Find out why the pupils don’t want to be “promoted” and why Miss Quackenbush has to find some way to get rid of them! \nProduced by special arrangement with PIONEER DRAMA SERVICE\, INC. of Englewood\, CO \n

SUMMARY:Dark Secrets
DESCRIPTION:The finale performance of the 2022 Page-to-Stage series “Dark Secrets\,” or (“I Know What You Did”)\, is written and directed by local playwright C.A. Dougherty. In Dougherty’s newest play\, two sisters with a bad case of sibling rivalry find themselves faced with unexpected and sometimes hilarious consequences\, trying to test out the theory that everyone has at least one secret that they don’t want anyone to know. \nReader’s theater is a unique experience for audiences. In a typical theater experience\, the audience is invited into the scene; but during a reader’s theater production the audience is invited into the story. Stripping a script to its barest bones–the dialogue–really pushes both actors and directors to focus their energy on developing rich characters that keep the plot moving forward without reliance on props and sets. This undertaking emphasizes the power of the words. \nEach show will be followed by a meet and greet with the cast\, providing the audience with a unique opportunity to socialize with the performers and crew. Coffee and cookies will be provided. \n“Page to Stage: A Readers Theater Experience” will run at the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center every weekend in May with performances on Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm and Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Admission is $5 at the door.

SUMMARY:A Gap in Generations
DESCRIPTION:Once again proving that laughter is the best medicine\, Max Merchen will direct “A Gap in Generations\,” by Jerry Blunt\, continuing the Page-to-Stage series. DESCRIPTION:The Page-to-Stage reader’s theater series continues with “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds\,” written by Paul Zindel and directed by Joanna Mechaley.

The celebrity guest Santa Claus—played by Frankie’s long-suffering husband\, Dub—is passing a kidney stone. And the entire cast is dropping like flies due to food poisoning from the Band Boosters’ Pancake Supper. And when Frankie lets slip a family secret that has been carefully guarded for decades\, all hope for a successful Christmas program seems lost\, even with an Elvis impersonator at the manger. SUMMARY:"Once Upon A Shoe" and "Bad Play"
DESCRIPTION:See both “Once Upon A Shoe” and “All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play” in this special double feature performance on Sunday\, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. \n“Once Upon A Shoe” by Joseph Robinette: Mother Goose sadly announces to her children that they must leave their home—a large\, comfortable shoe—and move to an old sneaker “across the tracks.” The children decide to “put on a show” to save their shoe\, and in the best Garlandooney tradition\, they proceed to enact eight of Mother Goose’s best poems. In the audience\, a stranger turns out to be the famous movie producer Cecil B. DeMillstream and\, of course\, he loves the show! The shoe is saved and Mother Goose and her troupe are off to Hollywood. This production is performed by children in grades 2-6. \n“All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play” by Werner Trieschmann: Based on several disastrous theatrical experiences\, “Bad Play” peels back a tattered curtain to examine the process of putting on a show that is less than good. A stuffy narrator (what bad play is complete without a stuffy narrator?) guides the audience through the whole sorry process. We go from the audition—where the director is more worried about roast beef than paying attention to the warm-up exercise\, and the neurotic cast pretends to be bacon—to rehearsals—where a passive-aggressive stage manager gives everyone grief. There’s also a special meeting of the Small Part Support Group and a production of Romeo and Juliet set in a Starbucks with costumes of potato sacks and bowler hats. This production is performed by children in grades 7-12.  \n“Once Upon A Shoe” is produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois \n“All I Really Need to Know I Learned by Being in a Bad Play” is produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois

Performances are Saturday\, June 26 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday\, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. \nSynopsis\nBased on several disastrous theatrical experiences\, “Bad Play” peels back a tattered curtain to examine the process of putting on a show that is less than good. \nProduced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois

SUMMARY:Once Upon A Shoe
DESCRIPTION:“Once Upon a Shoe or The Rhymes and Mimes of Mother Goose and Her Traveling Troubadours” by Joseph Robinette is one of two plays put on by the Froelich Young Actors Guild in 2021. Performances of this show are Friday\, June 25 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday\, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. \nSynopsis\nMother Goose sadly announces to her children that they must leave their home—a large\, comfortable shoe—and move to an old sneaker “across the tracks.” The children decide to “put on a show” to save their shoe\, and in the best Garlandooney tradition\, they proceed to enact eight of Mother Goose’s best poems. In the audience\, a stranger turns out to be the famous movie producer Cecil B. DeMillstream and\, of course\, he loves the show! The shoe is saved and Mother Goose and her troupe are off to Hollywood. According to one director of children’s theatre\, “It was absolutely perfect for a real Mother Goose who had to put on a play with 20 eight-to fourteen-year-olds.” \nThis production is performed by children in grades 2-6. \nProduced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois

Tad was a strong supporter of the Music Department at Black Hills State University. As well as providing scholarship funds\, he was a major donor toward the purchase of a Steinway piano for the recital hall in Meier Hall. He was a distinguished faculty member in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for nearly forty years. As a result he was well aware of how difficult it is for faculty to find funding for the purchase of equipment for research and teaching. During a decade as head of his department\, he was a driving force in obtaining funding for equipment that would foster the careers of young professors. He was delighted to have the opportunity to quickly make a dream come true for the BHSU music professors who had launched a fund-raising effort to purchase a much needed world class piano. Students and faculty were profuse in their thanks to Tad. Just last fall Sandra sat in on a class through BHSU’s Visitor Pass program and as they left class a student said to her “I’m on my way over to Meier Hall to play on the Steinway. Thank you.” Tad would have loved to hear that comment! \n
