SUMMARY:Theater on the Run 2023
DESCRIPTION:Theater on the Run is back for its twelfth year on Saturdays\, September 9 & 16 at 6 pm! \nFour downtown Spearfish businesses open their doors to a group of our actors who will perform a playlet in each location. After each show\, the audience moves to a new location to enjoy another performance. Completing the “run”\, the evening ends with a performance in the Matthews theater for all 104 ticketholders. Refreshments are available at each venue. \nThe play and cast remain the same on both dates\, just the downtown locations change. Tickets are limited to 26 seats per venue\, for a total of 104 tickets each weekend. \nOn both evenings\, The Matthews Opera House theater will be the location of the finale performance. \nA Sunday matinee performance is also scheduled. This special showing will “run in place” with all shows presented in the Matthews theater and snacks provided in the fireplace room. \nHow does Theater on the Run work?\nTheater on the Run begins with four different groups of theater patrons–26 people each– starting at a pre-determined location. After each group has enjoyed a 15-20 minute play\, the audience rotates to the next location to view the next production. This will continue until the finale\, where all four groups will meet in the Matthews Opera House for the last show. Each venue will have beverages for sale\, with some offering adult and some offering non-adult beverages. Appetizers are included in the cost of the ticket. \nTheater on the Run is a fun and unique way to experience theater which has made it one of our most popular events each year. A limited amount of tickets are available and the event has quickly sold out since 2012\, so make sure to get them early. This event is one you won’t want to miss! Tickets are only sold in The Matthews art gallery or online and must be purchased in advance. The participating venues are NOT selling tickets. \nA sporting chance…\nTicket sales begin on Tuesday\, August 15 at 10 a.m. This will be strictly enforced.\nTickets sell out quickly and we want to ensure every patron has an equal opportunity to get theirs. Any attempts to purchase tickets prior to August 15 at 10 am will not be honored. \nA little advice for groups…\nIf attending the performance with a group\, we recommend purchasing all tickets in one transaction to ensure seats are available to accommodate the entire party. If you must purchase them separately\, please pay careful attention to your “starting” location to make sure the whole party “starts their run” in the same venue. Due to seating limitations\, we are unable to make changes once your purchase is complete. \nOnly 104 tickets per evening!\nWe have only 104 tickets each for Sept. 9 and 16\, for a total of 208 tickets. All tickets are $40. The ticket includes the show and appetizers that are provided by all of the participating downtown venues. Drinks are available at many of the venues\, for an addition cost (proceeds go directly to the venue). \nThe plays and directors\n“Accused of Comedy\,” by Carl L. Williams\nDirected by Jon Steven Wiley\nAfter comedy has been outlawed in society\, two bottom-of-the-barrel comics face trial for committing comedy.  They discover humor is no laughing matter. \n“Matterhorn\,” by Rich Orloff\nDirected by Matt Woodard\nStuck in a never-ending line at Disneyland\, a husband and wife are just on the verge of killing each other — until they devise a novel solution to their marital woes… \n“Complaint Department and Lemonade\,” by Kamron Klitgaard\nDirected by Tytus Spivey\nIn this rapid succession of hysterical grievances\, the complaint department takes on everything from Oreo icing to kleptomania and from songs stuck in the head to the price of cheese and on and on and on.  Could there be a glimmer of hope for anyone in charge of a complaint department? \n“Pier #70\,” by Grant Binkleman\nDirected by Max Merchen\nBased on a true story. This retelling is mostly accurate…except when it’s not. \n“A Tale of Two Spectators\,” by Peter Manos\nDirected by CA Dougherty\nIn a park\, a man and a woman secretly watch their respective spouses carry on an affair. As time goes on we realize they have been meeting like this to watch their spouses for quite some time and have even developed something of a bond with each other\, despite their predicament. And perhaps they have discovered a little more about themselves and their lives\, as well. \nThe “Run”\nSept. 9 play locations are:\nGood Earth Natural Foods: “Accused of Comedy”\nSt. Vincent De Paul: “A Tale of Two Spectators”\nOriginal Spearfish Breakfast House: “Complaint Department and Lemonade”\nMatthews Opera House Gallery: “Matterhorn”\nFinale: The Matthews Opera House Theater: “Pier #70” \nSept. 16 play locations are: \nStudio 621: “Accused of Comedy”\nBlackbird Espresso: “A Tale of Two Spectators”\nCommon Grounds: “Complaint Department and Lemonade”\nMatthews Opera House Gallery: “Matterhorn”\nFinale: The Matthews Opera House Theater: “Pier #70” \nTickets go on sale August 15\nTickets go on sale at 10 am\, Tuesday\, Aug. 15. SUMMARY:Anybody Out There?
DESCRIPTION:Anybody Out There?\nA community theater comedy by John Patrick\nShowtimes:\nApril 19\, 20\, 26\, and 27 at 7 pm\nBox Office: 6 pm | House Opens: 6:30 pm\nApril 21 and 28 at 2 pm\nBox Office: 1 pm | House Opens: 1:30 pm\nNo late admission to main floor. Main Street\, Spearfish. \nPoor Oliver Pankey is a born loser; his landlady charges him when someone else breaks his window; his fiancee leaves him for a married man; his boss at the bank cuts his pay when he asks for a raise; and a thief takes everything he has—including his only suit. And\, as the last straw\, when he visits a doctor to check on the results of a blood test the files get switched\, and he is told that he’ll be dead within six months. Fed up\, and reconciled to his fate\, Oliver turns into a raging lion\, performing feats of dazzling bravery and ending up as the new branch manager of the bank. He even agrees to help the FBI by becoming a sitting duck for a gangland shoot-out—only to learn\, at the eleventh hour\, of the doctor’s horrendous error. Needless to say our stalwart hero’s knees turn suddenly to jelly\, but the action spins zanily on\, deftly finding its way to a happy—and hilarious—conclusion.

Who has time for that though? Why not have the children of 2024 tell us this tale in a witty and hysterical recall of one of our favorite fairytales? Introducing “Snow White and the Seven Endings”. Come one\, come all\, to witness princes\, pail-faced mirrors\, and seven (slightly) delusional dwarves retell the tale from their own memory. \n  \nWhen the seven forest dwellers reminisce about their recent run-in with a royal runaway\, they each have a different take on how the story unfolds and who the real hero is. But which is the real ending? The only thing they agree about is that the Prince shouldn’t get the credit! Laughter abounds as each of the seven forest dwellers takes their turn sharing their recollection of what happened to Snow White once she came to their cottage. Which will be your favorite? The mysterious “And Then There Were Seven\,” the melodramatic “Perilous Plight of Miss Snow White\,” or the slapstick “Snow Alone – Lost in the Woods”? Naturally\, everyone loves the action-adventure “Spindiana Jones and the Apple of Doom!” There’s also the Shakespearean “Mid-Snow White’s Dream” and the hysterical interpretive dance\, “The Hunt-Cracker\,” along with the classic retelling. \n  \nTHE ACTORS \nGRIMMLY \nCLUMSY \nDARING \nPLUCKY \nSCARLETT \nTWINKLE TOES \nSPINDIANA JONES \nSNOW WHITE \nEVIL QUEEN \nHAG \nMIRROR \nHUNTSMAN \nPRINCE \n\nABOUT FROELICH YOUNG ACTORS GUILD SUMMER THEATER CAMP  \nEach sizzlin’ summer in Spearfish\, The Matthew’s Opera House and Arts Center invites students entering grades 2 through 12 to a camp that encompasses the imagination. Starting the day with Grades 7-12\, the morning is filled with heroics\, humor\, and theater experience  handed-down from our own amazing Matthews Mentors! Then Grades 2-6 take the floor from 1-4pm learning about our super secret theater tricks and being awe-inspired galore! A registration fee of $50 counts towards costumes\, crafting sets and scenery\, and inspirational instruction for three whole weeks of fun. Ask Matthews staff about the option for older kids to work off their registration fee by helping us keep law and order in the Little’s Group for the afternoon session.

SUMMARY:THEATER RUNNING IN PLACE 2024
DESCRIPTION:WHO: Come one\, Come all enjoy our Community this Fall!  \nWHAT: Theater Running in Place \nWHERE: In the Matthews Opera House Theater.  \nWHEN: September 15\, 2:00 pm \nWHY: Community\, Connection\, and Creativity? Why NOT? \nOur special matinee performance of “Theater Running in Place” presents all the fun and variety of Theater on the Run in a single venue: the Matthews Opera House Theater. Our actors will perform a series of five playlets on the Matthews stage with appetizers available between each show in the fireplace room.  \n  \n   A sporting chance: \n         Ticket sales begin on August 15 at 10 am. This will be strictly enforced. Tickets sell out quickly and we want to ensure every patron has an equal opportunity to get theirs.  \n  \n  A little advice for groups: \n         If attending the performance with a group\, we recommend purchasing all tickets in one transaction to ensure seats are available to accommodate the entire party. If you must purchase them separately\, please pay careful attention to your “starting” location to make sure the whole party “starts their run” in the same venue. Due to seating limitations\, we are unable to make changes once your purchase is complete. \n  \n\nTHE SHOWS THAT WILL HAVE US ON OUR TOES \n“ALMOST MAIN” by John Cariani Directors: Charlotte Fladmoe\, Matt Woodard\, Cami Dohman\, Lisa Myhre\, Shirlene Joseph\nA woman carries her heart\, broken into nineteen pieces\, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size\, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags\, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost\, Maine\, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night\, the citizens of Almost — not organized enough for a town\, too populated for a wilderness — experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end\, begin\, or change beyond recognition\, as strangers become friends\, friends become lovers\, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous\, plain-spoken\, thoughtful\, and sincere\, Almost\, Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love\, each with a compelling couple at its center\, each with its own touch of sorcery. \n  \n

Main Street\, Spearfish\n     ADULTS $20;  YOUTH $10 \n\nTHIS IS GOING TO BE ALMOST AS MAGICAL AS A LEG LAMP…\nHumorist Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother\, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself at Higbee’s Department Store. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here\, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas\, the school bully; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more. A Christmas Story is destined to become a theatrical holiday perennial. \n“A Christmas Story is still … one of the more enchanting ways to be transported to a world beyond our own. Yet it also serves to remind us how lucky we are to live a culturally rich life … and Philip Grecian’s thoughtful stage adaptation preserves the old … references.” —Plain Dealer \n“Classics bloom quickly in modern times … you don’t have to have grown up with 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his ache for an air rifle under the tree to think of A Christmas Story as a Christmas must. And [this] version is just as kindly and just as cockeyed as A Christmas Story is meant to be.” —Orlando Sentinel \n“Grecian’s script retains Shepherd’s wry\, tongue-in-cheek humor.” —Orange County Register \n* Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock\, Illinois. \nAnnouncing the Cast…\nRalph………..Scott Kennedy\nRalphie………..Emerson Quinonez\nThe Old Man……….Casey Hibbert\nMother……….Liz Barbour\nRandy……….R.D. DESCRIPTION:WHO: YOU! \nWHAT: Harvey \nWHERE: Matthews Opera House Theater 612 N. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times\, most notably in a 1950 film starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. \n\nPlot\n\nElwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey – whom Elwood describes as a six foot\, three-and-one-half inch (192 cm) tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister\, Veta Simmons\, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium. When they arrive at the sanitarium\, a comedy of errors ensues. When Veta confesses that she has seen Harvey too\, the young Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood. But when the mistake comes out\, the search is on for Elwood and his invisible companion. \nWhen Elwood shows up at the sanitarium looking for his lost friend Harvey\, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood has had a strange influence on the staff\, including sanitarium director Dr. Chumley. Only just before Elwood is to be given an injection that will make him into a “perfectly normal human being\, and you know what bastards they are!” (in the words of a taxi driver who has become involved in the proceedings) does Veta realize that she would rather have Elwood the same as he has always been – carefree and kind – even if it means living with Harvey. \n\nCast List\n\n\nRandy Bender – Elwood P. In William Shakespeare’s classic comedy\, residents of Athens mix with fairies from a local forest\, with absurd results. Theseus\, Duke of Athens\, is to marry Hippolyta\, queen of the Amazons. All four young people end up in the woods where the fairy Puck\, who serves the fairy king Oberon\, puts a spell on Lysander\, and then Demetrius\, unintentionally causing both to love Helena.
