SUMMARY:Southern Hospitality
DESCRIPTION:The saga continues! The Matthews Opera House is excited to present “Southern Hospitality\,” the final installment in the Futrelle sisters trilogy. The fun begins on Friday\, November 11 at 7 pm and continues November 12\, 18 and 19 at 7 pm with matinee performances on Sunday November 13 and 20 at 2 pm. \nAdvance tickets: $17 Adults | $10 BHSU & Youth\nDay of Show: $20 Adults | $12 BHSU & Youth \nThe Story…\nIn this rapid-fire\, hilarious romp\, the Futrelle Sisters—Frankie\, Twink\, Honey Raye and Rhonda Lynn—are in trouble again. This time\, their beloved hometown\, Fayro\, Texas\, is in danger of disappearing and it’s up to the sisters to save it from extinction. But their plans to do so quickly go haywire. Honey Raye\, with a major assist from her former nemesis\, Geneva Musgrave\, comes up with a solution to bring back businesses and residents. It seems a salsa manufacturing factory is looking to relocate and a company representative is headed to Fayro on a scouting mission. Honey Raye makes promises that are not to be believed in order to woo the rep to choose Fayro. In fact\, Honey Raye has told them that on the very weekend of the rep’s visit just four days away\, the town happens to be having their biggest celebration of the year: “Fayro Days\,” which includes a craft show\, a pet costume parade\, a beauty pageant and a huge battle reenactment. Problem? That’s news to the citizens of Fayro who have to quickly band together to make her promises a reality. Added to this is the dilemma of Twink being so desperate to get married that she’s dragging the unwilling groom\, Deputy John Curtis Buntner\, to the altar. Frankie\, however\, seems to have it worst of all\, what with her husband\, Dub\, going through a major mid-life crisis at the same time her five-year-old twins are literally tearing up the town. And unfortunately for all of them\, the “meanest woman in twelve counties\,” Dub’s wicked\, old Aunt Iney\, is on her way for a visit. Iney’s arrival in Fayro is definitely cause for alarm for the sisters; but it’s nothing compared to Rhonda Lynn’s panic when she causes the old girl to drop dead in the Dubberly home just before the salsa rep shows up. But how the Futrelle sisters and the other citizens of Fayro\, including sweet\, simple\, Raynerd Chisum\, pull together and save their town is a testament to Southern strength and ingenuity—and a recipe for total hilarity. A laugh-out-loud farce and a stand-alone play in its own right\, SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY is the third play in the trilogy that began with Dearly Beloved and continued with Christmas Belles.

SUMMARY:The Fantasticks
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center is excited to announce The Fantasticks\, a musical by Tom Jones under direction of Casey S. Hibbert with musical direction provided by Connie Hubbard. \n“Try To Remember” a time when this romantic charmer wasn’t enchanting audiences around the world. The Fantasticks is the longest-running musical in the world and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time. \nAudiences have six opportunities to catch The Fantasticks on the Matthews stage: Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 pm\, April 14\, 15\, 21 and 22; and Sunday matinees at 2 pm\, April 16 and 23. For tickets\, purchase online\, call the box office at (605) 642-7973 or visit the Matthews Gallery at 612 N. Main. Street\, Spearfish. \nThe Story…\nThe Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy\, a girl\, and their two fathers who try to keep them apart. The narrator\, El Gallo\, asks the audience to use their imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic. The boy and the girl fall in love\, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words that\, “without a hurt\, the heart is hollow.” \nWith its minimal costumes\, small band and virtually nonexistent set\, The Fantasticks is an intimate show that engages the audience’s imagination and showcases a strong ensemble cast. Its moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned\, only to discover a more mature\, meaningful love is punctuated by a bountiful series of catchy\, memorable songs\, many of which have become classics. \nThe Cast…\nMatt: Austin Huether\nLuisa: Alivia Ruff\nEl Gallo: Casey S. Hibbert\nBellomy: J. Bruce Woodard\nHucklebee: Mitchell Mechaley\nHenry: Clark Ott\nMortimer: Matt Woodard\nThe Mute: Rose Peay

SUMMARY:Getting Our Acts Together
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews is excited to bring you a special night of theater: “Getting Our Acts Together: A Night of Northern Hills One Acts”! This special performance will be hosted at the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center on Friday\, August 25 at 7 pm. \nAdditional performances will be held at the Belle Fourche Rec Center Auditorium on Saturday\, August 26 at 7 pm and at the Historic Homestake Opera House on Sunday\, August 27 at 2 pm. \n\n\nThe performance\, aptly named for the collaboration between the Matthews Opera House\, Homestake Theater Works\, and the Belle Fourche Area Community Theater\, will feature three one-act plays presented by three separate directors and casts. Each of the shows will be around 30 to 45 minutes long\, to create a full evening of entertainment. \nPurchase tickets for the Matthews Opera House performance on Friday\, August 25 at 7 pm \nPurchase tickets for the Belle Fourche Community Theater performance on Saturday\, August 26 at 7 pm \nPurchase tickets for the Homestake Opera House performance on Sunday\, August 27 at 2 pm \nAbout the Shows…\n“Talent Show Fail”\nwritten by Iam McWethy and Carrie McCrossen \nThe town of Holly Springs has terrible roads\, and the citizens are counting on the money raised from this year’s talent show to fix them. Unfortunately\, the one guy who has a talent wants to do taxes onstage this year. As the host\, Tina is determined the show must go on\, even as duets are being hastily converted to solos\, angsty teens are reading upsetting poetry and everyone’s being hounded by a heckler. Will the town of Holly Springs get their act together or are they doomed to a future of potholes and unrehearsed roller-skating? Find out in this warm and winning community comedy! \n“Couch Potato”\nwritten by Patrick Gabridge \nEric is the ultimate slacker\, but his goal of remaining motionless in front of the TV is in serious jeopardy. His sister and fiance move out and leave him behind in the apartment\, and the two newlyweds moving in aren’t keen to share their space with a complete stranger. Can Eric use his wits to stay rooted\, or is he about to be yanked from his chosen resting place? A fast-paced comedy of inertia. \n“Superhero Sanitarium”\nwritten by Scott Haan \nLois Lancaster is a big-city journalist writing about the current state of mental health facilities. Her research takes her to a hospital populated with a unique group of quirky inmates who imagine they are crime-fighting superheroes. Speed Freak thinks he can run at incredible speeds\, while enthusiastic Dim Bulb thinks he has the ability to turn off lights with his brain. Mental thinks she can read minds\, despite being prone to sudden outbursts of bizarre non-sequiturs. Kevin\, much less quirky and flamboyant than the other inmates\, doesn’t embarrass himself with a ridiculous code name or costume…at least\, not initially. Dr. Gail Eisner appears to be a kindly hospital administrator\, a steady influence needed to effectively run a madhouse like this one. At first\, Lois finds their elaborate superhero fantasies to be an entertaining diversion\, the wild delusions of unstable minds\, until something unusual happens that makes her wonder….

This\, he soon learns\, was a mistake. He immediately clashes with the authoritarian head nurse\, a fierce martinet named Nurse Ratched. Despite Ratched’s strict reign\, McMurphy quickly takes over the yard\, leading others out of introversion\, staging a revolt so that they can see the World Series on television\, and arranging a rollicking midnight party with liquor and women. But McMurphy’s brash insubordination has its consequences.
