SUMMARY:"Beyond the Frame" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:This reception will also celebrate 20 years of the Gallery being open!! There will be a ribbon cutting with the chamber of commerce and a free tour of the Matthews.\n“Beyond to Frame” is an innovative new exhibit in the Matthews Gallery developed in partnership with the Black Hills State University Department of Fine Arts. In a traditional gallery experience\, patrons view framed artwork from an appropriate distance. However\, in “Beyond the Frame\,” artworks are hands-on pieces that visitors are encouraged to interact with. \nWe invite you to explore the space and installations with a mindset of curiosity as well as experience pieces from the perspective of someone who may be differently-abled. \nBy immersing ourselves in how we experience the world and how we interact with it\, we can create experiences that are more accessible to everyone regardless of abilities. By simply acknowledging a reality different than our own we can begin to create one that is equitable to all. \nArtwork will take on a variety of different forms that allow you to visualize sound waves\, experiment with color spectrums\, and immerse yourself in tactile experiences. In this show\, you can manipulate shadow puppets\, explore texture-driven exhibits\, and make your own art with “tall and small” art experiences.  \nIn addition to a focus on accessible art pieces\, work in this exhibit also revolves around the accessibility of art making. Oftentimes people barricade themselves behind the impression of “I’m not an artist.” They limit themselves to common art skills such as drawing\, painting\, or sculpting using specific tools and mediums. Removing those barriers of expectations and providing unique tools and perspectives opens a pathway into the idea that “art is for everyone.” At the Matthews\, we strive to foster creativity in whatever form it can be found and share those experiences with our community. \n“Beyond the Frame” will also feature works created by students from Canyon Hills Center as part of a community outreach program fostered by Lutheran Social Services and the Matthews. Twice monthly\, artists collaborate with the students to explore art in a wide array of mediums from poetry to collage.  \nThe exhibit opens to the public on November 18 with an opening reception scheduled on Friday\, November 22 from 5-7 pm in the Matthews Gallery. \n\nWe are so grateful to the Sponsors who helped make this experience a reality! \n\nPioneer Bank & Trust\nClarkson Family Foundation\nNational Endowment for the Arts\nArts Midwest\nCity of Spearfish\nSouth Dakota Arts Council\nBlack Hills State University – Department of Fine Arts

SUMMARY:Community Mural Painting Session
DESCRIPTION:This month\, we’re inviting you to lend a hand in the creation of the George Martin Memorial Mural. A public painting session will be held on Saturday\, February 26 in the Matthews theater. Sections of the mural will be on display and ready for your brushwork! Come be a part of this larger-than-life\, paint-by-numbers mural project. \nBe sure to wear clothes that can get a little dirty and join us in the theater from 11 am until 3 pm. \nThe mural commemorates the legacy of George Martin\, a life-long citizen\, councilman\, and active Spearfish resident. Once completed\, it will take its place on the side of the Sears building\, facing Old City Hall Square in downtown Spearfish. \nThe concept and design of the work were developed by BHSU associate professor of art Desy Schoeneweis and a group of university students. It incorporates aspects of Martin’s life and personality with the feel of a game board\, with colorful and playful images greeting the viewer at every turn. Roaming across the display are illustrations of the Western Hills Humane Society\, the High Plains Western Heritage Center\, and the D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery and Archives\, all places that Martin held near and dear to his heart. \nWe invite you to put on your grubbies and join us for this exciting community project! This event is appropriate for ages three and up. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Free Creativity Kits
DESCRIPTION:Every summer the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center hosts several Saturday Kids’ Crafts Days. This is a fun way to engage with children in the community and provide free creative outlets and crafts spanning a variety of mediums and materials. \nWith COVID-19 limiting the number of people we can safely host in our gallery and workspace\, this program will be changing just slightly this summer. \nWe are excited to announce that on select dates this summer\, we will be offering FREE Creativity Kits! These kits will include a collection of materials as well as step-by-step instructions to create that craft. We will also be posting the craft tutorial video on our Facebook page on the Saturday of the craft release. \nThese kits will be free to all kids in the area and can be picked up in the gallery during business hours anytime after the craft kit is released. There will only be about 50 kits made for each craft\, so they will be given out on a first-come-first-serve basis. \nAfter your kiddo has finished their craft\, we would love to see you post a photo of it online using the hashtag #MatthewsCreativityKits. We can’t wait to see what you create! \nCraft Dates:\nSaturday\, June 13 \nSaturday\, June 27 \nSaturday\, July 11 \nSaturday\, July 25
