SUMMARY:Illusionist Craig Karges
DESCRIPTION:Craig Karges\nExperience the Extraordinary!\nFriday\, September 22 at 7 pm\nBox Office: 6 pm | House Opens: 6:30 pm\nNo late admission to main floor. Late arrivals will be accommodated in the balcony as seats permit. \nAdvance tickets: $30 for adults and $15 for youth.\nDay of Show: $35 for adults and $20 for youth.\nTickets may be purchased online\, by phone at (605) 642-7973\, or by visiting the Matthews Gallery at 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish. \n \nCraig Karges is truly extraordinary! The “extraordinist” is an award-winning entertainer\, a nationally recognized speaker\, and an author. Karges has made over five thousand appearances in 27 countries on four continents and in all fifty states. \nCraig Karges combines the art of magic with the science of psychology and the power of intuition to create the impression that nothing is impossible. Tables float\, minds are read\, metal bends and your imagination is challenged because you won’t believe your eyes! Dennis Miller\, comedian\, and media personality\, put it this way after seeing Karges perform\, “This weirds me out!” \nAlthough he does not claim to have supernatural powers or perform as a psychic or magician\, the effects Craig Karges creates on stage are uncanny. Blindfolded\, he calls off serial numbers on borrowed currency. Unspoken thoughts are revealed. Predictions are made and verified. Borrowed finger rings are linked into a chain. Objects move seemingly by the power of the mind. A table dances and flies into the air. \nCraig Karges is unique’ what he does on stage is totally different\, and there is no other show like “Experience the Extraordinary!” \nAudiences may be mystified when it comes to understanding how Craig Karges accomplishes what he does on stage but his popularity is no mystery at all. \nCraig Karges has made over 40 national television appearances. You’ve seen him on The Tonight Show as well as CNN\, Fox News Channel\, CNBC\, E! Entertainment Television\, Lifetime Television\, Wisdom Television\, and even SOAPnet! The extraordinist has starred in two\, one-hour television specials. The sheer number and diversity of Karges’ television appearances are indicative of his widespread popularity. \nPerformance\, the international touring talent weekly\, named Craig Karges’ touring show\, Experience the Extraordinary\, one of the top five\, variety/family shows in North America. Karges was in good company as the list also included the likes of illusionist David Copperfield and Disney on Ice. Performance magazine called the extraordinist’s performance “The next era in mystery entertainment.” American Entertainment Magazine named him one of the top five variety entertainers on the corporate circuit. \nFrom Sardinia to Singapore and from Cancun to Cairo\, Craig Karges’ performing schedule has taken him around the world\, appearing at corporate events\, theatres\, universities and casino showrooms. “No matter where I perform\, I try to make my audiences feel they are a part of something they have never experienced before and hopefully will never forget. My goal is to entertain my audiences through the creation of mystery and to open their minds to unlimited possibilities\,” says Karges.

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series: Black Hills Paranormal Investigations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, September 13 at noon in the Matthews Theater with speakers from Black Hills Paranormal Investigations. \n“An Afternoon with Black Hills Paranormal Investigations”: The members of Black Hills Paranormal Investigations will speak on the paranormal; things they have come across at various locations; and what they discovered during their recent investigation of the Matthews Opera House. Is the Matthews haunted? If so\, by whom and does someone still linger there? \n\nAbout Black Hills Paranormal Investigations…\n\nBHPI was founded in 2007 and is proud to serve the Black Hills and its surrounding communities. Since their founding\, they have grown into a professional and trusted team of paranormal researchers. In the beginning\, they set out believing that to be taken as a serious paranormal investigations team it was imperative that they set high standards for themselves and their practices. Their guiding principles–critical thinking\, common sense\, continuing education\, and a healthy dose of skepticism–have served their clients well. Every aspect of their investigations are free of charge. For more about the investigators and their services\, visit bhparanormal.com \n\n  \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. \nDr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002. \nPrograms are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.  This is an opportunity to gain insight into themes that touch our daily lives. \n \nCoffee for the Bellman Brown Bag Series is generously provided by Common Grounds in Spearfish\, SD. \n

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series: James Casper
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, April 12 at noon in the Matthews Theater with speaker James Casper. \n“Close Cooperation Within a Society” – Sounds Far-Fetched Doesn’t It! James Casper will draw on his decades of experience as a commercial beekeeper as he discusses the inner workings of one of nature’s most complex animal societies: The Honey Bee Colony: where normally only one queen bee exists in the company of 60\,000 workers (females) and up to several thousand drones (males). She is the mother of all individuals in the colony and is a  very efficient producer of eggs but devoid of maternal instinct and physically incapable of caring for her young. The queen\, along with her own genetic DNA\, is also the custodian of the male parent’s contribution to the heredity of her female offspring and thus is responsible for the characteristics of the colony. Her presence controls the morale of the colony through the production and sharing of pheromones. The colony is a highly cooperative group where tasks are allocated so that more urgent needs are met before less urgent ones\, and individual actions are coordinated into a coherent whole\, resulting in a set of mechanisms that make close cooperation a reality. \n\nAbout James Casper…\nSince my childhood\, I have been fascinated by the groupings of these mostly white and often tall stacks of boxes sitting picturesque against the background of fields full of colorful blossoms that filled the air with a certain sweetness. The bee hive was the center of my attraction. My interest was raised to a full pitch once I purchased my first two hives and the result was\, well\, I won’t lie. I became a full-fledged “Keeper of the Bees”. Forty-five or so years later and I still absolutely love the journey through the makings of a honey bee colony. Follow me and I will introduce you to the fascinating world of the honey bee.\n  \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series…\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. SUMMARY:What Do You See?
DESCRIPTION:Young artists are being invited to the Matthews on Saturday\, January 14 at noon for “What Do You See\,” a painting project workshop. \nAfter listening to a passage from Circe\, students paint the characters or scenes they see while objectives of line\, shape\, form\, and space are present. A discussion will take place after each masterpiece has been created. \nAbout the Book\nIn the house of Helios\, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans\, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful\, like her father\, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship\, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft\, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. \nThreatened\, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island\, where she hones her occult craft\, tames wild beasts\, and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology\, including the Minotaur\, Daedalus\, and his doomed son Icarus\, the murderous Medea\, and\, of course\, wily Odysseus. \nBut there is danger\, too\, for a woman who stands alone\, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods\, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most\, Circe must summon all her strength and choose\, once and for all\, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from\, or the mortals she has come to love. \nWith unforgettably vivid characters\, mesmerizing language\, and page-turning suspense\, Circe is a triumph of storytelling\, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry\, palace intrigue\, love\, and loss\, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world. \nAbout the NEA Big Read\nThe National Endowment for the Arts Big Read\, a partnership with Arts Midwest\, broadens our understanding of our world\, our communities\, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. That explains Lynn Trefzger’s start as a ventriloquist/comedienne. For over 25 years\, Lynn has given life to a trunk full of comical characters. She has performed for family audiences worldwide. Lynn is Disney Entertainment’s favorite ventriloquist. Audiences are treated to Lynn’s vocal illusion talents when they meet a drunken but lovable camel\, a cantankerous old man\, a feisty little girl\, and you may even see some other audience members who are brought up to the stage for the action! Lynn’s show is spontaneously funny\, no two shows are alike! Her performances are tailored for both family and adult audiences. Lynn and her many voices were first brought to national audiences on TV’s popular “Star Search”\, since then she has performed on TNN\, VH-1\, Lifetime\, and Comedy Central. She received the “People’s Choice Award” from OAPN and has received The American Comedy Award\, NACA Variety Entertainer of the Year and ACPA Comedy Entertainer of the Year. She is featured in the comedy/documentary\, “I’m No Dummy” produced by NBC Universal. This whimsical and insightful hit comedy doc about ventriloquism examines the world of “venting”\, illustrating that this perceived novelty act is an extraordinary art form. Starring alongside veteran ventriloquists\, Tony Award® winner Jay Johnson of sitcom SOAP fame\, and two-time Comedian of the Year\, Jeff Dunham. When Lynn is not performing for audiences worldwide\, she is the managing director for her own family of 5 children and one very patient husband!

SUMMARY:South Dakota Day of Giving
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, November 29\, the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center\, along with the entire state of South Dakota\, will be celebrating South Dakota Day of Giving. This is a day to celebrate all the nonprofits in our state and the incredible work they do! As a 501c3 organization ourselves\, we want to thank YOU for supporting us this past year. Whether you have donated money or time\, attended a performance\, or even just shared one of our posts on social media…..you have helped our mission here at the Matthews Opera House! \nThe Matthews Opera House theater in 1925\, during a production of “Tom Thumb’s Wedding\nSouth Dakota Day of Giving\, affectionately dubbed “Giving Tuesday\,” celebrates its fourth year on November 29\, when it connects local nonprofits with their supporters through acts of philanthropy. Conceived by South Dakota Gives\, Giving Tuesday allows donors to make donations directly to nonprofits like the Matthews with 100% of the funds supporting their chosen organization. \nDONATE TODAY! \nCommunity performers presented “Annie Get Your Gun” in 1989 on the Matthews stage.\nWhen you invest in the Matthews\, you foster creativity\, opportunity\, and culture in our community. \nHere’s a quick snapshot of the programming you helped support in 2022: \nFree and equity-based programming abounds at MOH\, including the Bellman Brown Bag Lecture Series (pictured)\, Author Talks\, artist workshops and a thriving children’s theater camp.\n\n(12) Bellman Brown Brown Bag lectures covering a variety of subjects: everything from history to live piano performances. These events are completely free to attend.\n(10) 3-hour artist workshops led by practicing artists. Not only were these events free to attend but all supplies were provided to participants!\n(33) Author Talks featuring local authors across genres from poetry to self-help to fiction. These events are free to attend with coffee and freshly-baked treats available.\n(120) children registered for the 2022 Froelich Youth Actors Guild children’s theater camp held in June\n(4) gallery exhibit opening receptions\n(6) community theater performances including mainstage shows\, a month of reader’s theater\, Theater on the Run\, and a brand new collaborative performance with the Homestake Opera House and Belle Fourche Community Theater!\n(52) weeks of Open makeSPACE Hours\, in which participants are invited to gather in the Matthews Gallery workroom to create and fellowship with other artists\, with complete access to donated supplies.\n(14) special events featuring national and international talent including Sierra Ferrell\, Eliza Blue\, and Sophia Beatty\nThe 44th annual Festival in the Park\, a Spearfish tradition\, and the Matthews largest fundraising event of the year!\n\nThe Matthews Gallery champions local artists and fosters creativity through free programming.\nIn addition to great programming\, the Matthews also strives to champion emerging artists and performers\, giving them experience and exposure during the first blush of their careers. With the Matthews umbrella covering everything from humanities to visual and performing arts\, opportunities are abundant for budding creatives. Through your gifts\, we’re able to provide a safe space for artists to create\, perform\, and exhibit and believe us when we say\, some of them are going to be really big! \nDid you know ticket sales cover only about 18 percent of the Matthews annual operating expenses?\nIn recent years\, the organization’s annual budget has largely been supplemented by grants\, which are becoming increasingly competitive for nonprofits like the Matthews to obtain.  \nHow will your donations help in 2023?\n\nWe hope to expand our current free and equity-based programming\, continuing to make the arts available to everyone.\nOur back stairwell is in need of repair due to significant water damage.\nWe need a new movie projector in the theater (the current projector is more than 20 years old and no longer reliable).\nHistoric preservation means continual interior building maintenance and repairs to our building (such as new carpeting in the lobby and ceiling repairs to remedy cracks).\nWe would love to expand opportunities to our local kiddos through the Froelich Young Actors Guild children’s theater camp.\n\nThank you for Giving! Your gifts of a single day impact our ability to function effectively over the coming year. We are so grateful for your support! \nDONATE NOW! \nThe Matthews theater continues to entertain 116 years after opening its doors for the first time. (Audiences loved “The Nerd\,” starring Kirk Hauck\, Bruce Woodard\, Shaley Lensegrav\, and Mitchell Mechaley)

SUMMARY:Zoom with Santa
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews Opera House received the following special message from Santa Clause: \nHo! Ho! Hello! \nGreetings kids and parents of Spearfish! Every December the Matthews Opera House invites me to come and spend the afternoon with you. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. I just love seeing your faces and hearing your Christmas wishes. However\, this year the COVID pandemic is making it a little more difficult to see you in person. Safety is very important (Mrs. Claus is an especially big stickler for following rules and guidelines) and so I’ve been working with the staff at the Matthews to find a jolly way to still say hello but from a distance. \nThis year\, the elves have set up a special Zoom line at the Matthews and I’ll be using that to talk to all the boys and girls in the Spearfish area. I will have times available on December 5 & 12 from 1-3 pm. After that\, I will need to get back to the North Pole to feed the reindeer! They get mighty grumpy if I’m late with their carrots. \nAll you have to do is tell your parents to call the Matthews Opera House (605.642.7973) to set up an appointment. I want to make sure we also help the Matthews during the season of giving so all I ask is that you make a free-will donation of any amount to the Matthews while reserving your spot.  \nI can’t wait to talk to you and hear about everything you want for Christmas! See you soon! \n \n  \n  \n  \nSupport the Matthews Opera House for Giving Tuesday and reserve your spot to Zoom with Santa! Call our gallery at 604.642.7973 or stop by!

SUMMARY:The Matthews Celebrate SD Day of Giving
DESCRIPTION:Today is a day to celebrate all the nonprofits in our state and the incredible work they do! As a 501c3 organization ourselves\, we want to thank YOU for supporting us this past year. Whether you have donated money or time\, attended a performance\, or even just shared one of our posts on social media…..you have helped us thrive! \nWith COVID-19 canceling many of our events\, this past year has been difficult for our organization in so many unexpected ways. We have already been amazed and overwhelmed with gratitude for the generosity our supporters have shown. During this annual day of giving\, we ask for your support once again. \nIf you are willing to donate\, there are three ways this can happen: \n\nDonate online to the Matthews HERE. If you would rather donate in person\, you can come to the gallery today during business hours. You can also donate via mail. Instructions are listed at the donation link.\nYou can schedule a special Zoom call with Santa Claus! Appointments are available on December 5 & 12 from 1 pm to 5 pm. A free-will donation of your choice is suggested. Find out more HERE.\nShop in our gallery and purchase locally handcrafted gifts for you or your loved ones. This not only supports our organization but the Black Hills artist that created your piece as well!\n\nThank you for your consideration and the support you have already shown the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center. We are so eager for the day when our theatre will be filled with an audience once again!
