SUMMARY:The Two Tracks
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews\, in partnership with Spread the Tunes\, is excited to bring you The Two Tracks as part of our “JAM-uary” music series! The Two Tracks will take the stage on Friday\, January 20 at 7 pm. General admission tickets for this single event are $12 in advance or $15 day of show. The entire concert series can also be purchased for a discounted price of $40! \nThis concert benefits Grooming Alliance of Spearfish and Black Hills Nordic Ski Club. \n“There is just enough twang in the music to make it country and just enough rock to make it interesting.”\n– No Depression \n\nAbout the Band\nAmerican Songwriter has this to say about The Two Tracks: “They avoid many of the cliches and gimmicks that have grown common in the Americana world while still championing a natural\, Earth-grown sound. To hear an acoustic quartet reach a level of dynamic and thematic intensity like The Two Tracks do is an immeasurably rewarding experience. It’s pure musicianship\, it’s pure excellence\, it’s pure Americana.” \nHusband and wife duo Julie and Dave Huebner write songs that traverse the male and female perspective with emotional and natural images of rural American life. The band cares about lyrics\, story\, the power of the song as much as the music itself\, and every arrangement is designed to fully highlight that direct connection between the song and the listener. Hailing from the eastern side of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming\, the band has traversed the country bringing their joyful\, unique sound to stages big and small\, including NewWestFest (CO)\, Deadwood Jam (SD)\, Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival (CA)\, MeadowGrass (CO)\, Albino Skunk Music Festival (SC)\, Red Ants Pants Music Festival (MT)\, Levitt Sioux Falls (SD)\, LevittAMP Green Bay (WI)\, Ashley for the Arts (WI)\, Beartrap Summer Festival (WY)\, Sioux River Folk Festival (SD)\, Music on the Mothership (NM)\, Oystergrass (WY)\, and The LAWN (CO)\, to name a few\, and opened for artists such as Orville Peck\, Eilen Jewell\, Kitchen Dwellers\, Black Lillies\, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades and more. They recently completed their first international trip\, traveling to Dubai for performances at the World Expo. \nJulie’s driving rhythm guitar\, on-stage enthusiasm and vocal prowess dance perfectly with Dave’s rich voice and unique cello playing\, adding a layer of surprise to the band’s sound. This is complemented wonderfully by the four part harmonies\, and rock solid groove filled out by Taylor Phillps on bass and Fernando Serna on drums. All seasoned musicians and good friends\, they have knit their passions into a tight band family\, and it comes across in their albums and on stage. Their latest Cheers to Solitude\, was one of the last records made at The Butcher Shoppe in Nashville with Grammy winning engineer Sean Sullivan (Sturgill Simpson\, Travelin’ McCourys)\, and was produced by Will Kimbrough (Todd Snider\, Rodney Crowell) and mixed by Grammy winner Trina Shoemaker (Tanya Tucker\, Sheryl Crow)\, spending several weeks on the Top 40 Americana Radio Chart\, and the Top 10 Alt-Country Specialty Chart.  \n“Great vocals\, strong lyrics\, and glorious harmonies.  More than anything\, though\, it’s the sheer joy of making music that comes through.”\n-Glide magazine \nListen Now…\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW4OV58yToc” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGoK39LsydY” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:The Sweet Lillies
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews\, in partnership with Spread the Tunes\, is excited to bring you The Sweet Lillies as part of our “JAM-uary” music series! The Sweet Lillies will take the stage on Friday\, January 13 at 7 pm. General admission tickets for this single event are $12 in advance or $15 day of show. The entire concert series can also be purchased for a discounted price of $40! \nThis concert benefits the new Spearfish Skate Park. \n\nAbout the Band\nThe Sweet Lillies’ music is\, first and foremost\, heartfelt and collaborative.  Those defining traits are given life by the trio of musicians who make up the Lillies\, Julie Gussaroff\, Becca Bisque\, and Dustin Rohleder\, who have combined their individual strengths together to deliver powerful narratives of life in song.  With their acoustic string-band lineup of guitar\, viola\, and upright bass given flight by ethereal\, vocal harmonies that float like a dream\, the Sweet Lillies’ music has an old-time soul with a forward-looking eye.  The Sweet Lillies have incorporated all of their cumulative life experiences into their music\, their song-writing\, and their artistry\, crafting an uncommonly-beautiful style they have christened String-Americana – a nod to the band’s all-encompassing musical tastes and willingness to experiment with genres.  As Gussaroff explains\, “Some musicians learn from teachers\, some learn from family members\, and some are self-taught.  Some musicians are classically trained\, some come up through folk\, some draw from multiple springs\, from hip hop through pop to bebop.  In the Lillies’ all of these skill sets are valuable\, relevant\, and appreciated.” \n  The Sweet Lillies are built upon their collaborative ideals and are always ready to share a stage or develop a project with any musicians who share the same no-holds-barred creative approach.  This has made each one of their inventive\, energetic live shows a wholly unique event as setlists are changed on the fly\, songs are given new life and shape\, and guests are always welcome to join in the creative explosion.  Those on-stage partnerships create a space for incorporating instruments\, arrangements\, and styles that aren’t necessarily typical of the genre\, but that help create a rich\, compelling sound that defies easy categorization.  Over the years they have been joined onstage by a number of legendary performers including\, Sam Bush\, George Porter Jr.\, Peter Rowan\, Sally Van Meter\, Andy Hall from the Infamous Stringdusters\, Kyle Hollingsworth and Jason Hahn from the String Cheese Incident\, Jennifer Hartswick\, and Natalie Cressman from the Trey Anastasio Band\, among many others.  Andy Thorn from Leftover Salmon who has sat in on many of those live adventures says\, “It’s always a joy to play with the Sweet Lillies. Over the years\, I’ve seen them evolve from a folk-and-bluegrass group into a genre-bending powerhouse. Today\, at a Lillies show\, you’ll hear everything from their beautiful\, soulful originals\, to creative reinventions of your favorite 90s hip-hop tracks. They’re always ready to have fun – on stage and off – without losing an ounce of their professionalism.” \nThe Sweet Lillies were born from Gussaroff’s desire to form a band in which each member would be an equal participant in terms of songwriting\, singing\, and creative input.  After years of accompanying other artists\, serving as a side player\, and writing songs for others\, multi-instrumentalist and classical-trained vocalist Gussaroff wanted to establish a true musical collective that would highlight the best qualities of all involved.  In 2014 Gussaroff met Bisque\, who was a classically trained violist.  The two found an immediate and deep musical connection and the Sweet Lillies were born.  In 2017 at a campground jam at the Hangtown Ball they heard guitarist Rohleder.  That night the three played for what they remembered as\, “Ten magical hours.”  The following year in 2018\, Rohleder joined the Sweet Lillies full-time completing Gussaroff’s vision.   \nSince forming in 2013 the Sweet Lillies have released three albums: 2016’s self-titled release\, and 2018’s A Lighter Hue produced by Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman.  Their latest album\, Common Ground\, produced by Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone\, was released last year.  \nGussaroff explains\, “String band music is compelling.  What makes it so universally appealing is the way it lends itself to effective fusion of diverse styles\, skill-sets and conceptions.”  The Sweet Lillies take that notion to heart and do just that with their album and performances that exemplifies their collective spirit and pulls from all the varied arrows in the band’s quiver.  The Sweet Lilles stay true to the string-band soul that is at the heart of their music\, but prove they are also unafraid to explore all corners of their distinct musical experiences. Producer Carbone sums it up best\, “The world needs a band like The Sweet Lillies\, whose music is positive without denying the darkness in the world.  Their songs are uplifting but they also invite the listener to be introspective and draw their own conclusions.  Like all great music it does so while taking you on a journey of joy.” \nListen Now…\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygVK3fQwDk” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_1Bj31Ag4″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO2MkJJVZnE” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Locals Only: Adda Boyd\, Randy Hedge and The String Goats
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews\, in partnership with Spread the Tunes\, is excited to bring you Locals Only as part of our “JAM-uary” music series! Locals Only is a multi-musician event featuring local musicians Adda Boyd\, Randy Hedge and The String Goats on Friday\, January 6 at 7 pm. General admission tickets for this single event are $12 in advance or $15 day of show. The entire concert series can also be purchased for a discounted price of $40! \nThis concert benefits The Front Porch Coalition\, a unified front for suicide prevention. \n\nAbout the Bands\nThe String Goats\nThe String Goats are a Spearfish bluegrass supergroup of sorts\, featuring members of Six Mile Road (Jake Jackson on fiddle & vocals\, Trappor Masson on banjo\, and Mike Brennan on bass)\, along with Humbletown’s Dylan Lewis on guitar & vocals.  They’ve been playing around the Spearfish area since early 2022.  “Pure\, simple\, South Dakota bluegrass.” \n  \nAdda Boyd\nSpearfish up-and-comer Adda Boyd continues to make a name for herself as a confident new voice in neo-traditional country. Adda’s fresh off a solo performance at the world-famous Ruffed Up Duck Saloon in Laramie\, part of the first-ever Western AF Music Showcase. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=ZG-VfIIxjPc” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n\n\nRandy Hedge\nRandy Hedge\, known locally as “The Singin’ Pastor\,” is a local singer/songwriter\, and pastor for The United Church of Christ in Spearfish. After spending his career as a university counselor in Wisconsin and North Dakota\, circumstances led him to our neck of the woods. This is his Matthews premier. He spent his growing-up years in the Black Hills and Wyoming.  Back then\, he listened to everything from the Eagles to the Beatles and James Taylor. Randy learned to play guitar one summer at the family cabin in Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills and has been playing\, writing\, and performing regularly his whole life. His full-time work has been in education and in ministry\, but music has always been part of who he is.  And\, it’s no surprise he leans toward songs that are from the heart. Randy has played in clubs and restaurants and at church since high school.  These days?  You might see him in a wine bar\, a microbrewery\, or at events like weddings and festivals (although he’s not the dance guy). He plays mostly solo\, and his song list is much longer and wider than it was back in the day. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Da7rrvMDZFY” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center on Friday\, October 28 at 7:30 pm at the Matthews Opera House & Arts Center for an evening of live music with pianist and composer Philip Daniel! \n\n“Philip Daniel’s deeply-moving classical compositions are elegant in their simplicity yet complex in their sublime depth of emotion. Daniel has an uncanny knack for finding the perfect moment to introduce strings and subtle synths to his hauntingly beautiful piano pieces. They are startling moments within sprawling cinematic movements\, which powerfully pull on the heartstrings and can bring a tear to the eye.” \n~ musicvine \n \n\n\n  \nAbout Philip Daniel\nFrom Lincoln\, Nebraska\, Daniel did his graduate work at the UMKC Conservatory in Piano Performance and his undergraduate studies at Hastings College\, where he earned a Bachelor’s in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy. \nDuring his undergraduate years\, Philip discovered a passion for creating his own music. He was heavily inspired by contemporary classical composers such as Olafur Arnalds\, NIls Frahm\, Philip Glass\, Max Richter and more by their ability to transmit powerful emotions thru simplistic\, minimalistic sound while each possessing their own unique “voice” in a non-cliche manner. He aims to follow in these musician’s footsteps by blending aspects of classical music\, minimalism\, cinematic qualities\, and more. He seeks to appeal to the seasoned\, trained musician as well as the normal\, non-musically inclined listener in a way that can impact both. \nPhilip has released 6 studio albums as follows 1. Gradient (2017) 2. This Tree is Made for Climbing (2018) 3. Between Us (2019) 4. Re: Gradient (2019) 5. BLOMMA (2020) and 6. When Softness Lifted Us (2021) as well as several EP’s. He continues to compose/record solo artistic projects yet is venturing into the film scoring and music licensing world. His music is featured by several licensing companies and has been used countless times in film. This last year has also seen him begin to custom compose soundtracks for films as well as dance collaborations. \nHis sole purpose as a composer is to create music that’s primary goal is to convey unequivocal emotion and to make people truly “feel.” Philip believes that music has a unique ability to cause change in the world through this personal connection to individual listeners and aims to be a small part in positively impacting his community thru his music. \nPhilip currently resides in Lincoln\, Nebraska with his wife and dog working in his home studio. He is set to begin performing again next fall throughout the midwest. \nWatch…\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SNNteAr8LY&t=14s” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q9EcS9TKuo&t=15s” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjZUPty43Vw&t=7s” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Eliza Blue: Kithship Collective
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews Opera House & Arts Center is excited to present The Kithship Collective in partnership with author\, folk-musician\, and shepherd Eliza Blue on Sunday\, October 2 at 2 pm in the Matthews theater! \nThe Kithship Collective’s objective is to preserve\, share\, rediscover\, and reimagine melodies from the grasslands. For this installment\, Eliza will be hosting Lakota flutist and hoop dancer Kevin Locke\, and North Dakota folk-singer and rancher Chuck Suchy for an interactive\, family-friendly afternoon of stories\, songs\, and dancing. \n\nKithship = a relationship built on shared knowledge of place \nEliza’s inspiration for creating the collective: \n“The grassland ecosystem is one of the most endangered on the planet and one of the least appreciated…and this ecosystem’s biodiversity and potential for carbon capture is exceptional! \nI began work for the collective as a series of invocations of praise and prayers of gratitude for the prairie\, for healing\, for understanding and for rebuilding our relationships to this place and to one another. I wanted to write love songs to all there is to fall in love with. I wanted to write songs people could dance to together\, and I wanted to find other musicians and artists who were interested in doing the same thing. SUMMARY:Dead Horses with special guest Adda Boyd
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews and Spread the Tunes are excited to announce that Dead Horses will perform at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Wednesday\, September 7 at 7:30 pm! \nAbout Dead Horses\n\nThe union of Sarah Vos’ emotive songwriting and Dan Wolff’s bass playing transcends the singer-songwriter-with-backup-musicians paradigm. Dan’s adventurous musicality equally shines alongside Sarah’s songwriting sensibility. To date\, Dead Horses has released three albums\, two of which have been produced by Ken Coomer of Uncle Tupelo and Wilco\, an Audiotree Live Session\, three singles\, and a five-song EP. \nSince the band’s early days\, Dead Horses has been something of a fluid project centered around Sarah and Dan but has also welcomed other like minded musicians for recording and touring. Two of the band’s original members ultimately left the group due to opioid addictions (“I still see the pawn shop sticker every time I look at my guitar tuner\,” remembers Vos)\, but the Dead Horses moniker the pair created as a tribute to a friend who’d overdosed from heroin stuck even after their departure. To this end\, Vos says\, “Our music is about hope and joy\, all while sharing an important message that you’re never alone in your battles.” \nThis compassion is hard won. At 15\, Vos’ world turned upside down. Raised in a strict\, fundamentalist home\, she lost everything when she and her family were expelled from the rural Wisconsin church where her father had long served as pastor. \n“My older brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and my twin had mental illnesses and cognitive disabilities\,” explains Vos. “When the church kicked us out\, they basically told my dad\, ‘If you can’t lead your family\, how can you lead your church?’ At the time we were expelled\, we lived in the church’s parish house\,” explains Vos. “Suddenly\, my father was unemployed and my family was homeless. My parents couldn’t afford insurance for the medical care my siblings needed. We were kicked out and completely abandoned. One of the hardest things in life is watching your family suffer\, to be so close but unable to ease their pain. Visiting my siblings in psych wards hurt me in a way that I’m still not sure I’ve made sense of. While I can look back now and say that it maybe wasn’t conducive to me developing in a healthy way as a young person\, I can see that it instilled such a sense of empathy in me.” \nBy the time Vos turned 18\, her family had begun to get back on their feet and she headed to Milwaukee for college\, and there\, came to terms with revelations about her sexuality that her religious upbringing had forced her to repress. The mix of freedom and relief and shame and guilt was overwhelming\, and a depressive breakdown ensued. \n“I couldn’t take care of myself\,” she remembers. “I couldn’t sleep\, I couldn’t eat\, I couldn’t do anything. I stopped going to classes\, and then I dropped out altogether and moved back home to Oshkosh. That’s where I met Dan.” \nWhen bassist Wolff and Vos first started playing music together\, she felt as if the clouds had finally parted. Vos\, introduced songs she’d been writing since high school open mics\, Wolff learned a new instrument for the band (the double bass)\, and within months\, they had earned a devoted local following. Initially\, Sarah and Dan resided in different musical spheres. Sarah was at a singer-songwriter vantage point\, whereas Dan had previously played in punk bands\, but the two quickly bonded over their shared adoration of folk music and upbringings in the church. Regular gigs led to steady residencies led to regional touring and their first recordings. \n\n\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuhkeb-RDNw” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n\n\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4qafTZ3C_0″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n\nAbout their latest album “Brady Street”\nMilwaukee’s eclectic Brady Street neighborhood inspired the title for latest album by the Dead Horses\, who are releasing their new album on August 12. Blending elements of traditional roots with modern indie folk\, Dead Horses are both familiar and unexpected\, unflinchingly honest in their portrayal of modern American life\, yet optimistic in their unshakable faith in brighter days to come. The reflective track\, with frontwoman Sarah Vos (vocals\, guitar) providing her own backing harmonies and Dan Wolff (upright bass) providing the gently rolling bass line\, is an ode to their colorful\, free-spirited stomping grounds. They have built a huge streaming following (the album’s eponymous first single is currently on Fresh Folk\, Roots Revival and more).\n \nBrady Street is the long overdue follow-up to the band’s arresting 2018 album\, My Mother The Moon\, which landed on multiple high-profile playlists — the single “Turntable” has accrued more than 38 millions Spotify streams — and found the pair profiled in Billboard\, Noisey\, and independent global news publication Democracy Now\, as well as being a Rolling Stone “Artist You Should Know.” While they recorded in Nashville for their last album\, working with producer Ken Coomer (Wilco\, Uncle Tupelo)\, the pair decided to stick to their rural Wisconsin roots for the Brady Street sessions\, choosing to record at Honeytone Studios in Neenah\, Wisconsin on Lake Winnebego.\nWhere can you find them next?\nTOUR DATES (full band shows):\n\nSAT\, JUL 16 MANITOWOC\, WI – ACOUSTIC FEST\nTHU\, JUL 21 MINTURN\, CO – MINTURN CONCERT SERIES\nSAT\, JUL 23 CAMBRIDGE\, WI – MIDWEST FIRE FEST\nFRI\, AUG 12 MILWAUKEE\, WI – TURNER HALL BALLROOM\nSAT\, AUG 13 CHICAGO\, IL – HIDEOUT\nSUN\, AUG 14 DES MOINES\, IA – XBK\nTHU\, AUG 25 ST. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Sophia Beatty: Jazz for a Late Summer's Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:We are so disappointed to announce that Sophia Beatty’s “Jazz for a Late Summer’s Afternoon” performances on August 21 have been cancelled due to Covid illnesses. Advance ticketholders will be contacted by Matthews Opera House staff. \nThe Matthews is excited to announce that Sophia Beatty will perform at the Matthews Opera House with her special “Jazz for a Late Summer’s Afternoon” live music concerts on Sunday\, August 21! Choose the show that fits your mood. Sophia and the band will ease into the summer’s afternoon at 2 pm\, showcasing music with a classy\, chill vibe to soothe the soul. Then\, at 5 pm\, they’ll heat things up with a second show that we can only describe as a “soul\, jazz\, funk party!” Pick a single performance or purchase tickets to both! \nAbout Sophia Beatty\nBased in the Black Hills of South Dakota\, 25-year-old singer and songwriter Sophia Beatty sings with passion and heart that can be truly felt. She is known for her ability to sing classic jazz and soul cover music. From Whitney Houston to Ella Fitzgerald to Etta James\, she covers a whole variety of well-known music that moves people to tears or gets them up and dancing. \nShe originally went to college for engineering and planned to become a veterinarian\, but decided to pursue music after she felt God put it on her heart to sing instead. Now she performs music full time. When she is not on stage\, she is at home producing her own original music. She also gives vocal lessons to people who love singing as much as she does. You can find her at many venues around the Black Hills playing solo or with her band\, The Sophia Beatty Band. \nBuilding on this creative powerhouse of covers\, Sophia has recently taken to the streets to share her original creations as well\, which have been applauded greatly by the regional music community. She is already well on her way to becoming a staple of the northern plains musical experience. Sophia’s gift of synesthesia\, which gives her the ability to “hear” colors\, makes her original songs unique and emotionally moving. Synesthesia by definition is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. The music she writes reflects the colors she hears. Her hope is to glorify God through her new original music\, as well as create movements and ideas to raise money for the poor. \nWhere will she be next?\n03 Aug: Jambonz Deux | Sophia Beatty Rapid City\, SD \n05 Aug: Elks Lodge Country Club | Sophia Beatty Rapid City\, SD \n06 Aug: Shipwrecks Bar & Grill | Sophia Beatty Rapid City\, SD \n09 Aug: The Barn Bar | Sophia Beatty Piedmont\, SD \n10 Aug: Firehouse Wine Cellars | Sophia Beatty Rapid City\, SD \n24 Aug: Firehouse Wine Cellars | Sophia Beatty Rapid City\, SD \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FJJJrUupqg” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Sarah Shook & The Disarmers
DESCRIPTION:The Matthews is excited to announce that Sarah Shook & The Disarmers will perform at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Friday\, August 5 at 7:30 pm! \nPhoto by John Gessner\, 2018\nAbout Sarah Shook & The Disarmers\nNorth Carolina’s Sarah Shook sings with a conviction and hard honesty sorely lacking in much of today’s Americana landscape. Always passionate\, at times profane\, Sarah stalks/walks the line between vulnerable and menacing\, her voice strong and uneasy\, country classic but with contemporary\, earthy tension. You can hear in her voice what’s she’s seen; world weary\, lessons learned—or not—but always defiant. She level-steady means what she says. Writing with a blunt urgency—so refreshing these days it’s almost startling—Sarah’s lyrics are in turn smart\, funny\, mean\, and above all\, uncompromising. The Disarmers hit all the sweet spots from Nashville’s Lower Broad to Bakersfield and take Sarah’s unflinching tales out for some late-night kicks. At times\, it’s as simple and muscular as Luther Perkins’ boom-chicka-boom\, or as downtown as Johnny Thunders. The Disarmers keep in the pocket\, tight and tough. \nWant to know more about Sarah Shook? NPR sat down with her recently and got the full scoop on her newest album and her journey to sobriety. Catch the full interview and get the who\, what\, where and why that inspired her incredible music. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDypx0_8eaY” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0swLpmUvJA0″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M25-mPSPm5I” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:The Resonant Rogues: CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Cory Marie Podielski\nWe are so sorry to announce that tonight’s live music with The Resonant Rogues has been cancelled due to travel issues. We wish the band a speedy fix so they can get back on the highways and byways! Our apologies for any inconvenience–Advance ticket holders will be contacted by Matthews staff. \nFolk duo The Resonant Rogues will perform at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Saturday\, June 18 at 7:30 pm. \nThe Resonant Rogues’ dark Appalachian folk paints a picture of their lives in the mountains of Western North Carolina and on the road. Anchored by the songwriting duo of Sparrow (banjo\, accordion) and Keith Josiah Smith (guitar)\, the duo has traveled the byways and highways of America and crossed the oceans with instruments in tow. From riding freight trains to building their own homestead\, the pair are no strangers to blazing unconventional trails. At once rooted and adventurous\, each song tells a story of real experiences\, friendships\, and challenges. \n\nAbout the musicians\nSparrow\nSongwriter\, accordion\, banjo\, vocals \nSparrow’s passion for movement and sound started early\, with much time and energy spent on choir\, orchestra\, musical theatre\, swing dancing\, and figure skating. A voracious student\, she has immersed herself in an enormous range of performance arts. Sparrow plays old-fashioned originals with The Resonant Rogues and also leads a traditional jazz band called Sparrow and her Wingmen. She also occasionally performs as a solo artist and released an album of her original music in 2012. Her instruments include accordion\, banjo\, and fiddle. She has been belly dancing since 2003\, teaching and performing in Asheville and around the country. In 2006-2007\, Sparrow attended the Circus Center in San Francisco\, primarily for acrobatics\, and has toured and performed with Asheville’s Runaway Circus. \n  \nKeith Josiah Smith\nSongwriter\, guitar\, vocals \nSmith’s musical journey began with playing drums in punk/rock bands in his early teens. He then developed a passion for songwriting upon learning his first chords on the guitar and hosted open mics and a community music festival in his hometown of Menomonie\, WI. In the spring of ’09\, at the age of 18\, he left home and began traveling around the USA\, hopping freight trains and street performing for a living. In 2010\, he traveled to Nashville\, TN with hometown friend Jason Dea West (Intuitive Compass) and formed Barefoot Surrender with Benjamin Tod (Lost Dog Street Band). In the ensuing years\, he accompanied many other street bands between the Pacific Northwest and New Orleans\, LA. In 2012\, he gained a renewed focus on songwriting and studying the guitar\, which led him to record a demo in Seattle\, WA. With that new demo in hand\, he spent the next 10 days traveling across the country via freight train\, visiting musician friends along the way and landing in Asheville\, NC\, where he serendipitously met a woman named Sparrow who needed a guitarist for her recording session in three days. They formed Resonant Rogues in 2013\, and Keith’s adventurous spirit is now satisfied with touring around the world with his wife\, Sparrow. \n“I urge you to get out and hear them” -Lonesome Highway \n“Their intense cohesion is so intertwined that it feels like they’re playing with one pair of hands.” –No Depression \nListen…\nhttp:// \n

SUMMARY:Sierra Ferrell with Nick Shoulders
DESCRIPTION:This performance is SOLD OUT! \nThe Matthews Opera House & Arts Center\, along with Spread the Tunes\, Inc.\, are excited to announce that singer/songwriter Sierra Ferrell will be performing at the Matthews Opera House for one-night-only on Thursday\, March 17 at 7:30 pm. She will be joined by country singer Nick Shoulders. \nWith her spellbinding voice and time-bending sensibilities\, Sierra Ferrell makes music that’s as fantastically vagabond as the artist herself. Growing up in small-town West Virginia\, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist left home in her early 20s to journey across the country with a troupe of nomadic musicians\, playing everywhere from truck stops to alleyways to freight-train boxcars speeding down the railroad tracks. After years of living in her van and busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle\, she moved to Nashville and soon landed a deal with Rounder Records on the strength of her magnetic live show. Now\, on her highly anticipated label debut Long Time Coming\, Ferrell shares a dozen songs beautifully unbound by genre or era\, instantly transporting her audience to an infinitely more enchanted world. \nCo-produced by Stu Hibberd and 10-time Grammy Award-winner Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss\, Dolly Parton\, Gillian Welch)\, Long Time Coming embodies a delicate eclecticism fitting for a musician who utterly defies categorization. “I want my music to be like my mind is — all over the place\,” says Ferrell\, who recorded the album at Southern Ground and Minutia studios in Nashville. “I listen to everything from bluegrass to techno to goth metal\, and it all inspires me in different ways that I try to incorporate into my songs and make people really feel something.” In sculpting the album’s chameleonic sound\, Ferrell joined forces with a knockout lineup of guest musicians (including Jerry Douglas\, Tim O’Brien\, Chris Scruggs\, Sarah Jarosz\, Billy Strings\, and Dennis Crouch)\, adding entirely new texture to each of her gracefully crafted and undeniably heartfelt songs. \nSprung from her self-described “country heart but a jazz mind\,” Long Time Coming opens on the unearthly reverie of “The Sea\,” a haunting and hypnotic tale of scorned love. Its bewitching arrangement is adorned with sublime details like Ferrell’s tender toy-piano melodies and Scruggs’s woozy steel-guitar work. In a striking sonic shift emblematic of the whole album\, Ferrell then veers into the galloping beat and classic bluegrass storytelling of “Jeremiah\,” a heavy-hearted but sweetly hopeful romp featuring Jarosz on banjo and octave mandolin. Another impossibly charming bluegrass gem\, “Bells of Every Chapel” sustains that wistful mood as Ferrell muses on the exquisite pain of “loving someone unconditionally with all your heart\, but they don’t receive your love the way you want them to.” Graced with Strings’s nimble acoustic-guitar work and the heavenly harmonies of O’Brien and Julie Lee\, “Bells of Every Chapel” reaches its breathtaking crescendo as Ferrell belts out the song’s closing lyrics\, effectively twisting that heartache into something strangely glorious. \n \nAbout Nick Shoulders \nWielding an ethereal croon and masterful whistle crafted from a lifetime chasing lizards through the Ozark hills\, Nick Shoulders is a living link to roots of country music with a penchant for the absurd. Combining his family’s deep ties to regional traditional singing with his years of playing to crowded street corners\, Nick has sought to forge a hybridized form of raucously clever country music; born of forgotten rocky hollers and bred to confront the tensions of the 21st century South. As evidenced by his surreal album art and anachronistic songwriting\, Nick’s creative output is steeped in the complicated history of his beloved home of rural Arkansas\, but crafted as a conscious rebuke of country music’s blind allegiance to historical seats of power and repression. With a kind word and a mean yodel\, Nick hopes to put the ‘Try’ in country. \nListen\n \nWatch\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDGaultyNIk” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MekiBNW142Y” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKO75S0K8K4″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Hank Harris and the Hegg Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy incredible music performed by South Dakota artists during Homegrown Sessions. This series will be ongoing\, so check back frequently for new concert announcements. \nPerforming next as part of our Homegrown Sessions will be Hank Harris and the Hegg Brothers. They will be joined by special guest Jimmy Goings. Enjoy an evening of acoustic folk with local musicians. This performance will be Friday\, October 29. Tickets are $20 adults\, $10 youth & BHSU students. General seating. A cash bar will be available \nHANK HARRIS\nMy musical journey performing in South Dakota has taken me at least a half a million miles through hundreds of towns\, stages large and small\, ballrooms\, opera houses\, libraries\, museums\, bars and eateries\, museums\, community theaters\, schools and cow pastures. From crowds of 15\,000 to intimate small settings. Thousands of people met\, though I can’t remember all their names. \nPlaying with South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands (DD and the Fayrohs\, Red Willow Band and R&B Supply)\, solo\, duos\, trios and an occasional 10-piece horn band has offered me a continuing musical education and opportunity to pursue a life of creating music. Many thanks to the fellow musicians and audiences that have made this possible. Through these journeys\, writing and chasing songs has been a common thread. By drawing from my road experience\, my work with the Adams Museum (Two CDs\, Deadwood Songbooks I and II)\, The South Dakota Railroad Museum (Currently researching and recording a CD collection of train songs)\,12 years as a part of SD Arts Council Touring Artist program\, and 40 years of writing my own songs\, in performance I tell the stories of how these songs come to life. Illuminating the tales of songwriters\, the historical context\, inspiration and the writing process itself. To tell the stories of the storytellers and their journeys\, and then play the songs and let them speak for themselves. It’s all about the story. And the stories are funny\, poignant\, enlightening\, heartfelt\, silly and span the wide and emotional landscape of the human experience. \nJONATHAN HEGG\nJonathon Hegg is the youngest of three musical sons whose parents were lifelong music educators. He graduated from Augustana College (now University) with a degree in musical performance. His joint efforts with his brother Jeremy began with Spooncat! and has moved into duets with him as well as numerous larger configurations. He has had the extreme pleasure to play what he refers to as second keyboard and background vocalist as well as being the mixing engineer of the albums made by Spooncat!\, Holiday Jam\, and anything Hegg Brothers related. He performs music for a living\, which began with his first of three years with A South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. Occasionally he arranges for various ensembles and teaches. \nJEREMY HEGG\nJeremy Hegg\, Music Director for Holiday Jam\, is the oldest son of two lifelong music educators\, grew up in Dell Rapids\, South Dakota\, and received his music degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He is the staff arranger and composer for the Augustana Brass Choir\, Sioux Falls Municipal Band\, and many marching band programs throughout the country. \nAs a performer\, Jeremy is known for his band Spooncat!\, which has performed throughout the region since 1996. He has performed around the country and throughout Europe with artists ranging from Smokey Robinson to Chuck Berry. In recent years\, he has been a featured guest pianist with South Dakota Acoustic Christmas. In 2008\, Jeremy started The Radio Specialists\, a group that includes several Holiday Jam members. Jeremy was also the 2003 recipient of the Mayor’s Award for the Performing Arts. \nJIMMY GOINGS\nOriginally from South Dakota\, Jimmy Goings is famous for being the lead singer and writer for Santa Esmeralda (now Generation Esmeralda) from 1977-1982. He has played with several South Dakota bands\, including Ma’s Boy & Wonderband which were both inducted into the South Dakota Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jimmy has worked with Hank since 1997 when they produced his album “World Beat Cowboy” which went on to win SD Album of the Year. They just finished their sixth Studio Album together. \nListen\n\nCOVID 19 Policies\nIn order to help ensure the safety of all audience members\, performers\, volunteers\, and staff members\, masks will be required during this event regardless of vaccination status. SUMMARY:Eliza Blue: Live from the Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Streaming live from her ranch in Northwestern South Dakota\, join writer & folk-singer Eliza Blue with special guest Todd Larson of Eclectic Wreck for a special Facebook Live performance on July 9 at 7:00 pm MT. Eliza will be sharing songs as well as stories from her new book “Accidental Rancher.” \nThe concert will stream for free on the Matthews Opera House Facebook page. You can follow or view our Facebook page at the link below. \nMatthews Opera House Facebook Page \nAbout “Accidental Rancher”\nWhen Eliza Blue first moved to northwestern South Dakota\, she didn’t plan on staying long. After all\, the singer/songwriter had spent most of her adulthood hopping from place to place. But then she fell in love with a Perkins County rancher — and the land\, the wind\, the livestock and the giant blue expanse of a West River sky. \nNow the former urbanite tackles her daily duties on the ranch — bottle-feeding bum lambs\, milking her dairy cow\, Rita\, and wrangling two young children — while somehow finding time to contemplate and write about life on the high plains. In Accidental Rancher\, Blue shares a collection of these writings\, bringing a new voice and a musician’s grace to the culture of rural America. \nPurchase “Accidental Rancher” \nAbout Eliza Blue\nEliza Blue is a shepherd\, writer & folk-singer. In addition to her weekly column ‘Little Pasture on the Prairie\,’ which is carried by eleven different print publications\, she is a regular contributor to South Dakota Public Radio and Prairie Public Radio with her monthly series: ‘Postcards from the Prairie.’ Her first book\, Accidental Rancher\, a collection of essays about her transition from urban musician ranch wife and mother\, is out now. \nIn her 15 years of performing\, Eliza has worked and played with Billy Talbot (Crazy Horse)\, Dessa\, Charlie Parr\, Channy Leanaugh (Roma di Luna & Polica)\, & fellow Dakotan Jami Lynn\, just to name a few. Other highlights include performances at SXSW\, Red Ants Pants\, CMJ\, and Sioux River Folk Fest. \nAfter years on the road as a traveling musician\, Eliza now works in regenerative agriculture raising fiber sheep and grass-fed cattle with her husband and two children. \nEliza Blue Official Website

SUMMARY:The Talbott Brothers - Subscription Series
DESCRIPTION:The second event of The Matthews’ 2019-20 Subscription Series will take place on Nov. 14\, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. \nBlood is thicker than water and there’s nothing like family creating music together to prove it. With contrasting blood-harmonies and left-handed/right-handed guitar playing\, singer-songwriter duo The Talbott Brothers combine rock\, blues and pop with honest storytelling. \nNick and Tyler were born and raised in Imperial\, a small town in Southwestern Nebraska\, just a stone’s throw from the Colorado border. They began writing and performing together before relocating to their mother’s birthplace of Portland\, Oregon. Tyler\, the youngest (lead vocals\, baritone guitar\, harmonica) and Nick\, the oldest (backing vocals\, lead guitar) discovered their love of music after digging their dad’s old dreadnaught guitar out of the basement and teaching themselves to play along to Johnny Cash\, Bob Seger and the Beatles on vinyl. \nFollowing the release of 2017’s GRAY\, they found themselves in front of sold out crowds in the US and sharing the stage with ZZ Ward\, Johnnyswim and AJR. Ear to the Ground Music dubbed the record as one of the ‘Top 5 Albums of the Year’ stating it as\, “equal parts optimistic and captivating\, inspiring and hopeful.” Through rigorous touring and over half a million streams on Spotify\, they continue to build a strong and loyal fanbase wherever they go. \nWebsite | Spotify | Facebook

Jami’s roots are in the old-time country\, folk\, and polka of the Northeastern South Dakota jamborees of her childhood\, but a love for the great ladies of jazz developed right alongside her love of the banjo. \nWhile studying classical voice at the University of South Dakota\, Jami recorded two full-length albums and wrote her thesis\, “Early American Folk Music of the Upper Midwest” which introduced her into the folklore world of cowboys\, settlers\, lumberjacks\, and miners. The resulting recording\, Sodbusters was featured in the Smithsonian’s Shared Harmonies Project. While solo jazz pieces by Billie Holiday\, Fats Waller\, and Gershwin always work their way into solo performances\, sitting in with the Sioux Falls-based\, Dakota Jazz Collective\, and jazz/funk band\, Polyphase\, has eventually led Jami to a full-on collaboration with bassist Andrew Reinartz. Released in October of 2017\, the resulting work showcases Jami Lynn’s vocally driven jazz originals and some of her favorite standards as re-imagined by Reinartz\, pianist Jeff Paul\, and percussionist Daniel Heier. \nWhen not performing for public audiences\, Lynn also brings folk music to elementary students and hospital systems through the SD State Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools program and Touring Artists program. She is currently based out of Spearfish\, SD.
