Equally inspired by jazz-fusion exploration from the likes of Steely Dan\, Atlanta Rhythm Section\, and Yes\, and the guitar-driven prowess of Allman Brothers Band\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, and Grateful Dead\, This Road dives in and out of grooves and moods\, turning on a dime\, but always focusing on what the band sees as the most important aspect; the song. In addition to telling stories and gleaning wisdom from life\, love\, and struggle\, This Road captures an array of emotions and moods drawn from the dramatic narrative of living on the road in a touring band.” \n– Grateful Web \n— https://www.gratefulweb.com/articles/runaway-grooms-announce-their-third-genre-melding-release-road \nNot only do we have an incredible lineup of JAM-uary performers\, Crow Peak Brewery is on-site to keep the libations flowing! \nTicket sales help benefit local nonprofit organizations. \nListen Now…\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcqtQk__KEA” loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

SUMMARY:Second Saturday Song Circle
DESCRIPTION:Jam Date: December 9\, 2023 at 12:30 pm \n (Please check our facebook page and/or website for event updates\, cancelations\, etc. for the most accurate information on recurring events)  \n\nat the Matthews Opera House \nWhat is a Jam?\nMatthews Opera House & Arts Center is proud to host the Second Saturday Song Circle\, open to bluegrass and old-time folk musicians. These “jams” are set aside for string instrument players who want to share songs\, make new friends\, and enjoy a casual afternoon of string band music. They are perfect for musicians who have been playing solo and want to get used to playing in a group setting; those who have just learned how to play and want to play with others; those who have instruments that have been gathering dust for a “few” years; experienced players who are trying out playing instruments other than their primary instrument; and\, people who are comfortable playing their instrument but want to become more comfortable leading a song. \nEach session opens the floor for musicians to lead their favorite bluegrass tunes and folk music\, backed up by the other pickers in the gathering. Simple tunes are always popular!  ALL are welcome to join the circle for an afternoon of playing classic grass and folk favorites. \n

SUMMARY:Kenny Putnam and Jami Lynn featuring Jake Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Kenny Putnam and Jami Lynn\nFeaturing Jake Jackson\nSaturday\, September 30 at 7 pm\nBox Office: 6 pm | House Opens: 6:30 pm\nNo late admission to main floor. Late arrivals will be accommodated in the balcony as seats permit. \nAdvance tickets: $30 for adults and $15 for youth.\nDay of Show: $35 for adults and $20 for youth.\nTickets may be purchased online\, by phone at (605) 642-7973\, or by visiting the Matthews Gallery at 612 N. Main Street\, Spearfish. \nThe celebrated two-time South Dakota Fiddle Champ and internationally touring artist Kenny Putnam joins singer/songwriter Jami Lynn for an evening of new\, old\, and original music. The two have performed together in various groups over the years\, but have rarely had a chance to feature their musical conversation in this capacity. Multi-instrumentalist Jake Jackson of Spearfish-based band Six Mile Road will round out their sound on guitar\, violin\, and voice.  \nThe evening will contain a broad range of traditional folk\, original Americana\, and jazz music\, featuring Putnam’s well-honed voice on fiddle\, Jackson’s sharp guitar licks and Jami Lynn’s stylings on banjo and voice– the most compelling part of the evening being the magic of a new collaboration dressed up by the polish and taste of seasoned performers.  \nKENNY PUTNAM Musician and graphic artist Kenny Putnam is from Rapid City but has studied\, lived and worked in many places. As a professional musician he has performed on stages\, big and small–nationally and internationally. Stages include\, The Grand Ol’ Opry\, The Tonight Show\, Hee Haw\, the JFK Center for the Performing Arts\, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and the Oktober Hall in St. Petersburg\, Russia\, performing with the legendary Roy Clark.   \nPutnam is a two-time South Dakota Fiddle Champ who began touring and recording with The Red Willow Band in 1975. He was invited by the Smithsonian Institution in 1975 and 1976 to participate in The Festival of American Folklife\, demonstrating violin making and playing. With Red Willow he toured coast-to-coast for over six years\, making two albums. Putnam got off the road in 1989 to continue his art degree (began at the University of South Dakota) at the University of Iowa earning a B.F.A. in painting and a Master of Journalism by 1992.   \nAfter grad school\, Kenny’s wife Linnea\, a clinical pharmacist\, took a job in Rapid City in 1993. After coming home\, Putnam worked in marketing and the graphic arts for large corporate businesses. Musically\, he performed and recorded with a South Dakota Acoustic Christmas for 21 years. The group raised more than 1.3 million dollars for non-profits organizations across the State. In 2001 Putnam released a solo recording entitled “Sure Beats Me”\, and recently recorded his second album in Austin\, Texas called “Odd Numbers”. Working with musical groups\, he has been a two-time Grammy nominee and\, working with South Dakota Public Broadcasting\, won an Emmy.  \nPutnam is currently doing art\, having opened a ceramic studio. His work is featured at Prairie Edge Gallery in Rapid City\, SD and Rehfelds Fine Art Gallery in Sioux Falls\, SD. Read more about the artist at SDPB Radio! \nJAMI LYNN Hailing from the Great Plains of eastern South Dakota\, Jami Lynn began performing folk and bluegrass music at the age of thirteen. It took little coaxing from her grandfather to make the transition from the audience to the stage\, where old-time country\, polka\, and regional folk music reigned supreme. Now days\, she performs original folk music accompanied on claw-hammer banjo and finger-style guitar. She performs solo\, with Sioux Falls based band\, The JAS Quintet\, and as one half of folk duo The Nesters. When not performing for public audiences\, Jami also brings folk music to elementary students and hospital systems through the South Dakota State Arts Council’s Artists in the Schools & Communities program and Touring Artist program. Read more about the artist in 605 Magazine! \nJAKE JACKSON Jake Jackson currently lives in Spearfish but was raised in the Rockerville area of the Black Hills. Long-known as a vocalist and string musician in the band Six Mile Road\, there aren’t many local stages that he hasn’t played in his 30+ years of performance. \nPrimarily known for his talents on violin and guitar\, Jake also picked up other instruments over the years\, including clawhammer banjo and mandolin. He knew he wanted to play music at the age of nine after the Rapid City chamber orchestra visited his grade school and his journey with the violin began. By 15\, he had found a new love and freedom with music when he began studying bluegrass and Irish fiddle tunes. He picked up the guitar when the band Six Mile Road formed in 1998 and\, since that time\, has performed regularly around the Black Hills. In 2019\, he released an album with Six Mile Road\, “Takes A Long Time\,” and has been featured on several recording projects over the years with a variety of local artists.\n\nAlthough his own compositions can be generalized as Americana\, he enjoys playing Bluegrass\, Celtic tunes\, and Gypsy Jazz music\, though he appreciates a wide variety of genres. The Grateful Dead influenced his thoughts on spontaneous simultaneous manufacture and presentation (improvisation)\, which is essential to the styles of music he creates. He can’t say he ever pursued music\, as much as it’s just been woven into his life and he can’t imagine being without it. Born and raised on the Midwestern plains\, Carlisle is a product of the punk-to-folk music pipeline that’s long-fueled frustrated young men looking to resist. After falling for the rich ballads and tunes of the Ozarks\, where he now lives\, he began examining the full spectrum of American musical history. This insatiable stylistic diversity is obvious in his wildly raucous live performances\, where songs range from sardonic trucker-ballads like “Vanlife” to the heartbreaking queer waltz “Life on the Fence\,” to an existential talkin’ blues about a panic attack in Walmart’s aisle five. With guitar\, fiddle\, button-box\, banjo\, harmonicas\, rhythm-bones\, and Willi’s booming baritone\, this is bonafide populist folk music in the tradition of cowboys\, frontier fiddlers\, and tall-tale tellers. Carlisle recognizes that the only thing holding us back from greatness is each other. With a quick wit and big sing-alongs\, these folksongs bring us a step closer to breaking down our divides. \n“Willi Carlisle’s latest is good for what ails ya\, whatever ails ya.”\n-Arkansas Times \n“I’ll be damned if the heartstrings don’t get a firm tug.”\n-Music Mecca \n“A rave-up raconteur and a seasoned troubadour in the vein of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott or Utah Phillips\, Carlisle sings big\, feels everything\, spins yarns and takes you to the heart of American characters”\n-WMOT — Best of AmericanaFest 2022 \n  \nAdda Boyd\nSpearfish up-and-comer Adda Boyd continues to make a name for herself as a confident new voice in neo-traditional country. Adda’s fresh off a solo performance at the world-famous Ruffed Up Duck Saloon in Laramie\, part of the first-ever Western AF Music Showcase. \n\n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFNM9F9-ypo” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjMqgWvlt-0″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /]

Combining his family’s deep ties to regional traditional singing with his years of playing to crowded street corners\, Nick has sought to forge a hybridized form of raucously clever country music; born of forgotten rocky hollers and bred to confront the tensions of the 21st century South. As evidenced by his surreal album art and anachronistic songwriting\, Nick’s creative output is steeped in the complicated history of his beloved home of rural Arkansas\, but crafted as a conscious rebuke of country music’s blind allegiance to historical seats of power and repression. With a kind word and a mean yodel\, Nick hopes to put the ‘Try’ in country. \nDean Johnson\nFor over ten years\, Dean Johnson’s rustic tenor and simply strummed acoustic guitar have been perking up ears around the PNW and beyond. Dean has gradually built a devoted fan base — strictly through live performances — singing existential cowboy waltzes\, ballads about wishing one could find a way out of heaven\, honest confessionals\, and other heartbreakers from a unique perspective. His first album\, Nothing for Me\, Please\, was released on May 5th\, 2023\, on Mama BirdRecording Co. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmAwFPqHTe0″ loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3I7ME1oacMA” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_8fvDPw-IM” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UnB-Y8_20w” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n

Steep Canyon Rangers have been on a journey that is uniquely their own. The band started in college at UNC-Chapel Hill\, then dove head first into bluegrass in its most traditional form\, and over the years has risen to the top of the bluegrass genre headlining top festivals such as Merlefest and Grey Fox Bluegrass. Only to then be discovered by Steve Martin\, famous actor and banjo player. Martin has taken the Rangers on over a decade-long tour introducing them to hundreds of thousands of new fans and giving them prime-time TV exposure. This has helped SCR become the most recognizable modern name in bluegrass music. The band has continued to tour extensively on their own\, without Martin\, and has expanded their genre into country\, jam\, and Americana. The Rangers are big players in the bluegrass/country and Americana scene today. They are often compared to predecessors The Band\, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, and the modern Zac Brown Band. \n[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ehueG2TQO0&t=9s” loop=”no” muted=”no” /] \n
