SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag: Canyon Hills Project - One Year Later
DESCRIPTION:Speakers present their research and results on the evaluation of a year-long art residency program with the Canyon Hills Center\, a youth psychiatric facility in Spearfish. The study evaluated daily scores of the students who participated in the weekly art program to explore possible relationships between the program and positive behavioral changes. The residences were built around the theme of “Telling Your Story.” This theme encouraged emotional exploration\, self-expression\, creativity\, and inspiration. \nThe program goal was to provide broad exposure to many different forms of art and artists\, with the overlying goal of improving the lives of residents and creating a better environment for both residents and staff. Local artists provided two to five-week residencies in various areas of the arts\, including dance\, theater\, pottery\, collage\, sculpture\, songwriting\, and poetry\, to name a few. Results presented in this talk show the analysis after an entire year of the program. \nSpeakers currently scheduled to present are Alex Giles\, BHSU student researcher\, and a representative from the Canyon Hills Center. \nAbout Alex Giles\nAlex Giles is a junior at Black Hills State University studying psychology. Her expected graduation date is May of 2019. She is currently on two undergraduate research teams for the university\, with emphasis in the areas of art therapy and pain. After graduation\, she plans to go to graduate school and study clinical psychology. \nMade possible by…\nIn 2017\, the Spearfish Area Community Foundation granted the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center (MOH) $10\,000 for a year of residencies at the Canyon Hills Center. Funding covers materials\, staff time\, potential travel expenses\, and the payment of artists. \n  \nWhat is the Bellman?\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture.  Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1:00 p.m.  Designed to begin and end within each lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag 2017: Adults Creating Art Abroad
DESCRIPTION:Bonnie Halsey-Dutton & Tim Peterson \nTwo Spearfish artists\, Bonnie Halsey-Dutton and Tim Peterson have traveled to Europe with their art education ideas to present workshops in Spain and Portugal. They will describe their international teaching experiences and also consider the development of adult enrichment programs locally. \nBonnie Halsey-Dutton earned a PhD in Art Education from the University of Arizona in Tucson.\nTim Peterson is a local pastel artist. \nAbout Bonnie\nThe artwork of Bonnie Halsey-Dutton honors stories and explores mankind’s connection to the past. Living in South Dakota impacts her imagery\, as her art explores the cultural symbols\, stories\, and ancient artifacts from the region in which she resides. \n“As a society\, we are increasingly realizing the need to revisit primal knowledge; looking to the earth for balance\, just as our ancestors did. My art explores how these influences from the past continue to shape our contemporary world.” \nAbout Tim\nTim’s pastel paintings are always based on a factual occurrence. Although he is often able to verify physical details by revisiting a location\, that is never the primary goal. Other paintings must be guided by memory due to the transitory nature of what he has witnessed. It is interesting to him\, the dichotomy between the literal truth and even my memory of the same tainted by past experiences and prejudices. \nPeterson’s aim as an artist is to render his observations as true to his original visions as his skills will allow. Tim often thinks that real art occurs at each instant of recognition before craft has an opportunity to put into play its own interpretation. \n  \nWhat is the Bellman?\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture.  Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1:00 p.m.  Designed to begin and end within each lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.

SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag: "Telling Your Story" Art Residency at Canyon Hills Center
DESCRIPTION:The Canyon Hills Project\nAva Sauter\, The Matthews’ community outreach manager\, presents on the ongoing art residency program at the Canyon Hills Center in Spearfish. \nIn 2016\, and most recently 2017\, the Spearfish Area Community Foundation granted the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center (MOH) $10\,000 for a year of residencies at the Canyon Hills Center – a residential youth psychiatric facility – which will be empirically evaluated in association with Black Hills State University Psychology Department.  Funding will cover materials\, staff time\, potential travel expenses\, and the payment of artists. \nPresenters\nAris Karagiorgakis\, BHSU Psychology professor \nDr. Aris Karagiorgakis is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Black Hills State University who conducts research in two areas: art as therapy and the effectiveness of art intervention programs.\nHis current research investigates the “active ingredients” in art-making that contribute to the reported therapeutic benefits (i.e.\, lower stress/anxiety levels). He is also investigating the effectiveness of an art intervention program in an in-patient facility for adolescents with psychiatric illnesses.  \nIan Craig\, Researcher\, Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology – supervisor at Canyon Hills Center \nAva Sauter\, Community Outreach Manager for the Matthews Opera House and Arts Center \n“Telling Your Story”\nSpeakers present their research and results on the evaluation of a year-long art residency program with the Canyon Hills Center\, a youth Psychiatric facility in Spearfish. The study evaluated daily scores of the students who participated in the weekly art program to explore possible relationships between the program and positive behavioral changes. The residences were built around the theme of “Telling Your Story.” This theme encouraged emotional exploration\, self-expression\, creativity\, and inspiration. The program goal was to provide broad exposure to many different forms of art and artists\, with the overlying goal of improving the lives of residents and creating a better environment for both residents and staff. Local artists provided two to five week residencies in various areas of the arts\, including: dance\, theater\, pottery\, collage\, sculpture\, songwriting\, and poetry\, to name a few. Results presented in this talk show the first quarter analysis – meaning\, results for the first four months. \nWhat is the Bellman?\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture.  Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1:00 p.m.  Designed to begin and end within each lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.
