Her poetry has appeared in the Connecticut Review\, The Wildwood Journal\, Fledgling Rag\, La Libreta an online journal\, and in Roots Trunk Sky: IWWG’s Imagination and Justice Meditation-Free Writing Circle. A Pushcart nominee\, she is the author of three chapbooks: Every Orbit of the Circle\, The Story She Told\, and An Utterance of Small Truths. Her erasure poem Dakota 38\, a poem that dealt with the 38 Dakota men who were sentenced to death in Mankato\, Minnesota\, was on exhibit at Birdcage Bookstore in Rapid City\, South Dakota. A lifelong resident of South Dakota\, the self-proclaimed ‘Poet for the Common Man’ currently has three books in print\, Poems for the Common Man\, Volumes One\, Two and Three. The poet and author is presently working on a fourth column of the Common Man poems as well as a volume of Cowboy Poetry and a volume of short stories. His poetry has been well received and published in the South Dakota State Poetry Society’s periodical ‘Pasque Petals’ as well as the South Dakota Magazine. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s free-to-attend Bellman Brown Bag Series on Wednesday\, February 8 at noon in the Matthews Theater with speaker Dr. Jo Powell and her presentation On Mythology. \nMost people are familiar with the myths of the ancient Greeks and Romans\, stories of the gods and goddesses that ruled the world in early Western civilizations.  However\, all people around the world have their own set of myths and legends. But what exactly is mythology?   Why is it so important to us? And is it still important to us in our modern world? What we call mythology today had its foundations in attempting to explain a terrifying world\, and terrifying situations and their consequences (death and suffering).  We humans are complex beings\, but we have simple needs—we need to know why things happen\, we need to find meaning in things\, events\, ourselves.  Each human culture\, from the beginnings of our human history\, makes its own stories about the creation of the world\, the origins of humankind\, and the meaning of life. There is a great\, inborn need in us to understand why things happen\, to make sense of this\, our world. Myths provide meaning/cohesion in a society.  Science\, by its requirement that all things must be proven\, destroyed myths to a certain extent.  Myths are not\, for the most part\, true and proven.  That said\, though\, the purpose of myths is still valid.  We need to understand the underlying truths of myths or chaos results. \nThis lecture will examine mythology as a universal human need\, provide examples of world mythology\, and discuss some examples of folk art that were created based on that culture’s mythology.  We will also discuss why mythology still exists in our “modern” cultures today. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. Bruce will be presenting the slide show A Writer’s Life of Adventure- Fact &Fiction during this free event. \nThis program highlights how Bruce’s travels and bicycle journeys with his wife\, Tass Thacker\, through 54 countries led to a career as a writer\, explorer\, photographer\, speaker\, filmmaker\, and above all else\, storyteller. Bruce has written two travel narratives\, The Road of Dreams and Andes to the Amazon\, a rock climbing guidebook\, produced the documentary film\, Bruce and Tass Bicycle China\, and also recently published a 4-book fantasy series\, A Bright One Chronicles\, which was greatly influenced by his many expeditions around the world. DESCRIPTION:Please join us as the December Bellman Brown Bag Series rings in the holidays with Spearfish Piano Duet Club’s “Music for the Season.” This special holiday concert will take place in the Matthews theater on Wednesday\, December 14 from noon until 1 p.m. \nThis highly popular event packs the house\, so it’s wise to arrive early for a good seat. The balcony will be opened only after all the main floor seats are full. This event is free and open to the public. \nThe club has performed as part of the popular Bellman Brown Bag series since 2004. Performers include Sandra Asheim\, Pamela Baum\, Laurie Behrens\, Sue Cole\, Donna Dettman\, Kathy Ewing\, Ramona Hauk\, Ardyth Helmer\, Rita Hicks\, Constance Hubbard\, Laura Kolb\, Janeen Larsen\, Colleen McKirdy\, Emma McKirdy-Wilsey\, Lori Miller\, Angela O’Shea\, Stacey Potter\, and Marilee Woodard. \nThe Spearfish Duet Club began in 2003\, under the leadership of Synva Chrysler and Marianne Bieber\, as a way for intermediate and advanced pianists to maintain their piano skills and at the same time have fun and enjoy each others’ musical talents. SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series: Tim Velder
DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, November 16 at noon as Tim Velder presents this month’s Bellman Brown Bag Series lecture. Tim will present information on a person who is likely not well-known to area aviation enthusiasts: Neva Esmay. Ms. Esmay’s adventures deserve to be remembered for many reasons\, particularly for a prairie-raised girl whose fearless appetite for doing her bit\, was just what America needed in 1941 and beyond. \nNeva Esmay was born on March 26\, 1918\, at Draper to Roy and Edith Dean Esmay. She grew up in the Castle Rock area and was home-schooled. She graduated from Newell High School and went on to attend Spearfish Normal School. After graduating with a teaching certificate\, she began a life-changing journey. She became a licensed pilot and worked for the Spearfish Airport. She had many memorable experiences including stunt flying\, being caught on a cross-country flight when Pearl Harbor was attacked and all airports were shut down. She and Clyde Ice dropped food and supplies on top of Devil’s Tower when George Hopkins was stranded there after parachuting down on top of the tower. She also packed parachutes for the government. Neva was one of the very first women to ever get a commercial pilot’s license in the state of South Dakota. \nAbout the presenter\nTim Velder grew up in the Newell area and graduated from BHSU in 1991. He worked at northern Black Hills newspapers in Belle Fourche\, Newell\, Spearfish\, and Deadwood\, before going full-time with the Rapid City Journal in 1998. He took a new position as marketing and communications specialist with Powder River Energy in Sundance\, WY\, in 2011\, and lives there with his wife Gerri. He has one child in high school\, one at college in Laramie\, and one teaching in Sheridan. Tim has had an interest in local history since his college days under David Miller. He has presented research to various historical groups for the past 30 years and is currently vice-president of the West River History Conference. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. DESCRIPTION:We are so disappointed to announce that today’s Bellman Brown Bag\, “Gorillas in the Mist” with Bob Wilson has been cancelled. \n  \n  \nJoin us Wednesday\, October 12 at noon as photographer Bob Wilson presents this month’s Bellman Brown Bag Series lecture\, “Gorillas in the Mist.” \nIn 2017\, Wilson traveled to Uganda. The purpose of the trip was to work with local youth and to explore the country photographically. Wilson\, along with nine other photographers from the United States and Canada\, spent several days in Kampala teaching young people the basics of photography and learning about the local culture. Afterward\, the group embarked on a journey eastward\, visiting a women’s craft collective\, a community-owned tea plantation\, the Kibale Primate Reserve\, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Each stop provided wonderful opportunities\, not only for photography but to get to know and understand the real Uganda\, becoming travelers as opposed to merely being tourists. The culmination of the trip was a visit to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest\, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. The team had the opportunity to spend one hour with these amazing creatures\, observing and photographing them. The Bellman presentation will show the highlights of Bob’s journey as he learns about the people\, culture\, and wildlife of Uganda. \n \n\nAbout the presenter\nBob Wilson is a native of Lead\, SD. He has been fascinated with photography all his life\, taking pictures with everything from his sister’s old Brownie to the latest in digital cameras.  In 2005 he formalized this interest by attending and graduating from the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula\, Montana.  That year he also created Frogworks Photography as a vehicle to promote and market his art.  His photographic pursuits are eclectic and involve landscape\, commercial\, weddings\, portraiture\, and fine art.  His past clients include the Smithsonian Institution\, South Dakota Arts Council\, Spearfish Economic Development Corporation\, and various Black Hills businesses and individuals.  Locally\, Bob has focused on making images of the historical and abandoned buildings of the area\, using the technique of high dynamic range digital photography to capture the detail and character of these vanishing treasures. He has also begun to scratch his international travel itch by traveling to and photographing people and landscapes in Peru\, Ireland\, Uganda\, South Africa\, and Morocco. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, September 14 at noon as BHSU’s Michael Baum presents Geographic Reach: Explorations on the Taku Glacier. Baum will be highlighting his recent interdisciplinary research entitled Geographic Reach. This project focuses on a two-week ski expedition on a remote portion of the Juneau Icefield\, the fifth largest expansion of ice in North America. Please join us as he explores ideas about landscape and the intersections between art and the remote experience. \n \nAbout the Presenter…\nMichael Baum is a South Dakota native\, whom over the last twenty years has focused much of his time exploring the mountain ranges of California\, Wyoming\, Montana\, Washington and Alaska. His interactions with nature and the wilderness became the impetus for his graduate studies in fine art\, which he completed at Washington State University with an emphasis in drawing and printmaking. Michael is currently an Associate Professor of Studio Art at Black Hills State University in Spearfish\, South Dakota. Michael’s work has been included in numerous national and international exhibitions. His drawings have been exhibited at Site: Brooklyn\, Brooklyn\, NY\, The Tucker Cooke Gallery\, UNC Asheville and featured in INDA 9\, International DRAWING Annual. His work has been selected for the South Dakota Governor’s 6th\, 7th and 8th Biennial Art Exhibitions. Michael is a past recipient of a career development grant from the South Dakota Arts Council\, funded by The National Endowment for the Arts. Recently his print-based work has been selected for exhibition at The Foundry Art Center in St. Charles\, MO and Light Art Space in Silver City\, NM. \nRegionally his drawing and print-based work has been featured at The Plains Art Museum\, the South Dakota Art Museum\, the John A. Day Gallery at University of South Dakota\, and The Dahl Arts Center. His work has also been accepted into multiple public collections\, which include the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Oregon\, the Museum of Art/WSU in Washington\, the Boise Art Museum\, Idaho\, the Missoula Art Museum in Montana\, University of Colorado Special Collections\, Boulder\, CO and Artist Printmaker Research Collections\, Museum of Texas Tech University\, Lubbock\, TX. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. SUMMARY:Alex Portal: Award-Winning Cartoonist and Illustrator
DESCRIPTION:Alex Portal was born and raised in Pennsylvania. He grew up watching and loving everything related to cartoons and comic books. As a kid\, Alex would spend hours scribbling away on pretty much any blank surface he could find. After high school\, Alex worked odd jobs while continuing his self-guided studies of cartooning and working towards finding his big break. While living in North Carolina\, Alex met his wife Rachel and after graduating with a master’s degree in public history\, Rachel accepted a position with Deadwood History Inc. and the two moved to South Dakota. \nShortly after arriving\, Alex started working with the Black Hills Pioneer newspaper as a freelance editorial cartoonist. Alex gained some measure of note in the community\, and to date has won several awards for his cartoons including “Best Original Editorial Cartoon” from the South Dakota Newspaper Association\, and illustrated several children’s books written by local authors – including three books in the “But Nana…” series\, and “Grandpa’s White Cane.” \nAlex currently lives in Lead with Rachel and their two cats\, Maggie and Bumble. He serves as a reporter and inhouse cartoonist for the Black Hills Pioneer\, and is working on a fourth “But Nana…” book. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, March 9 at noon as BHSU’s Dr. David Wolff presents Finding Our Past: Landmarks in Black Hills History. By using a number of images\, this presentation will visit sites around the Black Hills that can tell us about our past. Some of these places have historic markers\, while others are just anonymous features on the landscape. Either way\, area residents are probably familiar with them\, but not with the full stories behind the locations. Through tales of the gold rush\, past mining ventures\, violent moments\, and famous personalities\, this talk will connect the landmarks to our past. \nDr. Wolff is Professor Emeritus at Black Hills State University where he specializes in South Dakota and Black Hills history. Wolff received a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and has written three books: Industrializing the Rockies; Seth Bullock: Black Hills Lawman; and The Savior of Deadwood: James K.P. Miller on the Gold Frontier. Wolff serves on the Board of Trustees for the South Dakota State Historical Society and Deadwood’s Adams Museum & House. DESCRIPTION:The annual Holiday Spearfish Piano Duets takes place in the opera house theater on Wednesday\, December 8 from noon until 1 p.m. It’s always wise to get here early for a good seat. The balcony will be opened only until all the main floor seats are full. This event is free and open to the public \n“Holiday Favorites” is the title of the 2021 December concert of the Spearfish Piano Duet Club. The club has performed as part of the popular Bellman Brown Bag series since 2004. Performers include Sandra Asheim\, Pamela Baum\, Laurie Behrens\, Sue Cole\, Donna Dettman\, Kathy Ewing\, Ramona Hauk\, Ardyth Helmer\, Rita Hicks\, Constance Hubbard\, Laura Kolb\, Janeen Larsen\, Colleen McKirdy\, Emma McKirdy-Wilsey\, Lori Miller\, Angela O’Shea\, Stacey Potter\, and Marilee Woodard. \nThe Spearfish Duet Club began in 2003\, under the leadership of Synva Chrysler and Marianne Bieber\, as a way for intermediate and advanced pianists to maintain their piano skills and at the same time have fun and enjoy each others’ musical talents. SUMMARY:Holiday Piano Duets
DESCRIPTION:The annual Holiday Spearfish Piano Duets takes place in the opera house theater. This event is free and open to the public from noon until 1 p.m. It’s always wise to get here early for a good seat. The balcony will be opened only until all the main floor seats are full. This is a FREE event. \n“Music for the Holidays” is the title of the December concert of the Spearfish Piano Duet Club . The club has performed in the popular Bellman Brown Bag series since 2004. Performers include Sandra Asheim\, Pamela Baum\, Laurie Behrens\, Sue Cole\, Carissa Deming\, Donna Dettman\, Ardyth Helmer\, Rita Hicks\, Connie Hubbard\, Laura Kolb\, Janeen Larsen\, Liz Luke \, Colleen McKirdy\, Darla Meyer\, Angela O’Shea\, Priscilla Rommkema\, and Symeon Waseen. The Spearfish Duet Club began in 2003\, under the leadership of Synva Chrysler and Marianne Bieber\, as a way for intermediate and advanced pianists to maintain their piano skills and at the same time have fun and enjoy each others’ musical talents. Members of the community and BHSU music students are involved in the performance and rehearsal activities\, organized by Dr. Janeen Larsen. DESCRIPTION:The November Bellman (November 14\, noon – 1:00pm) will feature Kelly Kirk\, Director of the BHSU Honors Program\, presenting “Veterans’ Legacy Program.” The Veterans’ Legacy Project\, launched by the National Cemetery Administration under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs\,  is a BHSU student writing project about the lives of veterans who are buried at the national cemeteries.
