DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Bonus Bellman Presentation on President’s Day\, Monday\, February 16\, at noon at The Matthews. \nThis patriotic program is presented by Karen Holzer of Historically Speaking / West River History Conference. It is proudly sponsored by The Matthews\, the West River History Conference\, the Spearfish American Legion Family\, America 250\, and South Dakota America 250. Karen will cover 10 segments of history\, each spanning 25 years. Karen will discuss national developments affecting our state through profiles and stories of several South Dakotans.   Also participating in the program will be Carol Howitz of the Spearfish American Legion family\, leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Brianna Edwards of the 1906 Theatre will perform a patriotic musical number. \nThe American Legion Family of Spearfish\, spearheaded by Carol Ann Howitz\, will welcome guests in the lobby and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. \nAll are welcome to attend this free\, community-centered celebration of history\, patriotism\, and civic pride. \n\n\nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series… \n\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month.Dr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002.Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Five featured poets — Whitnee Coy\, Chloe Lehman\, Nicholas Trandahl\, Starr Paul\, and Robert Harold Bordeaux — will read original work accompanied by live music from Josh Lehman and guest musicians. \nAfter an intermission featuring the collective’s first-ever merchandise launch\, the night opens up for community members to share their own poetry. SUMMARY:Bellman Brown Bag Series: Spearfish Piano Duet Club
DESCRIPTION:“Music for a Spring Day” is the title of the special May concert of the Spearfish Piano Duet Club on Wednesday\, May 11\, noon at Matthews Opera House in downtown Spearfish. The club has performed for the Bellman Brown Bag series since 2004. Performers include Pamela Baum\, Laurie Behrens\, Sue Cole\, Donna Dettman\, Rita Hicks\,  Laura Kolb\, Janeen Larsen\, Colleen McKirdy\, Emma McKirdy-Wilsey\,  Angela O’Shea\, Blair Petrson\, Priscilla Romkema\, and Symeon Waseen. The Spearfish Duet Club began in 2003\, under the leadership of Synva Chrysler and Marianne Bieber\, as a way for intermediate and advanced pianists to maintain their piano skills and at the same time have fun and enjoy each others’ musical talents. Members of the community and BHSU music students are involved in the performance and rehearsal activities\, organized by Dr. Janeen Larsen. The concert is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990’s. DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to a FREE Community Conversation session with Native American Hip Hop Artist Supaman. Hear a preview of his songs\, learn more about his music and advocacy work\, and ask your own questions. This is a great opportunity to meet the musician before Friday’s concert at the Matthews. Local songwriter Scott Simpson will serve as moderator. \nThis event will happen on the BHSU Campus in Jonas Hall Room 101. \nAbout Supaman\nAs a member of the Apsaalooke Nation\, Supaman makes his home on the Crow reservation in Montana. “Supaman” is Christian Takes Gun Parrish\, a Native American dancer and innovative hip hop artist who has dedicated his life to empowering and spreading a message of hope\, pride and resilience through his original art form. \nHe has been the recipient of the 2017 MTV VMA award for “Best Fight Against the System”! He is also a Nammy “Native American Music Award” winner\, “North American Indigenous Image Award winner\, and 7 “Tunney Award winner. He was awarded The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award in Canada for best video and was voted MTV’s new Artist of the Week! His 2018 nominations brought him home awards for Best Hip Hop Album and Best Producer for the Indigenous Music Awards. His latest video’s titled “Prayer Loop Song” and “Why” both have gone viral and have received millions of views on YouTube and Facebook which has put him in high demand touring extensively throughout the U.S.A and internationally. He has performed for Google at the Google headquarters in San Francisco. He recently was asked to audition for America’s Got Talent and the Broadway play Hamilton. He is currently working with Taboo from the multi grammy award winning group “Black Eyed Peas” looking to complete a project in the coming months.
