DESCRIPTION:Words & Music at The Matthews: featured poets\, live music\, merch launch\, and open mic celebrating 1 year of Black Hills Writers Collective.\n\n\n\nOne year of poetry\, community\, and creative expression\, celebrated together. \nThe Black Hills Writers Collective celebrates one year of building literary community in the Black Hills with a special evening at The Matthews. Five featured poets — Whitnee Coy\, Chloe Lehman\, Nicholas Trandahl\, Starr Paul\, and Robert Harold Bordeaux — will read original work accompanied by live music from Josh Lehman and guest musicians. \nAfter an intermission featuring the collective’s first-ever merchandise launch\, the night opens up for community members to share their own poetry. This fundraising event supports the collective’s mission to pay poets and artists\, expand workshop offerings\, and invest in sound equipment and community events. \nPart of The Matthews’ Ink and Imagination exhibit series\, celebrating literary and visual arts together. \nTimeline: \n\n6:00 PM — Social reception (downstairs gallery)\n6:30 PM — Doors open (main theater)\n7:00 PM — Program begins\n9:00 PM — Event ends\n\nTickets: $20 general admission\, $15 for BHWC members \nSeating: General admission\, no assigned seats

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Bonus Bellman Presentation on President’s Day\, Monday\, February 16\, at noon at The Matthews. \nThis patriotic program is presented by Karen Holzer of Historically Speaking / West River History Conference. It is proudly sponsored by The Matthews\, the West River History Conference\, the Spearfish American Legion Family\, America 250\, and South Dakota America 250. Karen will cover 10 segments of history\, each spanning 25 years. Karen will discuss national developments affecting our state through profiles and stories of several South Dakotans.   Also participating in the program will be Carol Howitz of the Spearfish American Legion family\, leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Brianna Edwards of the 1906 Theatre will perform a patriotic musical number. \nThe American Legion Family of Spearfish\, spearheaded by Carol Ann Howitz\, will welcome guests in the lobby and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. \nAll are welcome to attend this free\, community-centered celebration of history\, patriotism\, and civic pride. \n\n\nAbout the Bellman Brown Bag Series… \n\nThe Bellman Brown Bag series is a humanities program designed to explore ideas\, history\, literature\, art\, and culture. The Brown Bag program was developed by Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990s. Recognizing the Matthews Opera House as an ideal venue for the exploration of humanities topics\, he engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month.Dr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University\, Spearfish\, SD. His teaching career spanned thirty years. Bellman retired from BHSU and passed away in November 2002.Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month\, noon to 1pm. Designed to begin and end within the lunch hour\, patrons are invited to bring their lunch\, if desired\, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment.
