He has also attended national origami conventions where he has met and learned from many of the top origami artists in the country. Some may remember the three dimensional hanging origami falcon structure that Justin made for the Big Read at the Matthews Opera House in 2016. Justin is passionate about origami and looks forward to sharing his love of the art with others.

SUMMARY:ART HAPPY HOUR: Cork Trivets (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:  \nMaking Cork Trivets\nDuring this Tuesday Art Happy Hour\, Mary Baker provides instruction on the creation of cork trivets. FREE! \nDo you need to do something with all those corks left from your libations? Let’s make something fun and useful. If you have a favorite wine\, then bring the corks along. Mary will instruct participants on how to make some handy kitchen trivets that are decorative only. As these will be assembled with corks and glue\, they are not heat resistant. They may be used for use under plants or other decorative functions. \nEach trivet requires approximately 50 corks. Please feel free to bring your stash of favorite corks to use in your project or make use of the variety of corks available in the RE:Create makerspace. \nThis is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult. *Some of these events will have wine and beer for sale. IDs will be checked.  \nThe workshop takes place in the ArtCentral RE:create makerspace in The Matthews’ art gallery. \nSign-up is preferred\nEven though the workshop is free\, sign-up would be preferred in order for the instructor to be prepared with the correct amount of materials and supplies. Either call the art gallery at 605.642.7973 ext.0 — OR email kirk@matthewsopera.com to add your name to the class list. If emailing\, be sure to provide a phone number.  \nAbout Mary Baker\nMary Baker was born and raised 20 minutes north of San Francisco. She was raised by a family immersed in the liberal arts. Her mother was an art appreciator and her father was a lover of art and history. \nAt the time Mary went to school\, as a baby boomer\, many new schools were built and there was great stock set in schooling children well and fully. Mary always enjoyed the many field trips to museums\, zoos\, historical sites\, and beaches. \nEven as a young child Mary immersed herself in trying many different fields of arts and crafts. She especially\, to the frustration of her mother\, loved picking up objects and using them in “found object art.” At that time she received a rock tumbler as a gift\, which sparked a focused interest in rocks.\nIn a brand new high school\, in an art department stocked with anything and everything\, Mary was introduced to ceramics\, printmaking\, spinning fiber\, painting\, and weaving. This was where she developed the sense that three-dimensional arts and crafts were her forte. \nSince school\, Mary and her husband have raised two men in Spearfish. Once the children were old enough to fend more for themselves Mary was able to continue her dabbling in whatever crafts found their way to her. At this time she focuses on fiber\, spinning\, and knitting\, and polishing local rocks to use in jewelry and home decoration. \nMary can be found most Saturday mornings in the summer at the Spearfish Farmers Market where she sells her polished rocks and jewelry. \n

SUMMARY:Collage: The Art of World-Invention Workshop (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCollage: The Art of World-Invention\nSpearfish artist (of collage\, sculpture\, illustration)\, Jo Powell\, uses the RE:Create theme of found art with a workshop all about collage. This is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult. \nDetails about this workshop\n One of the most interesting things about collage is that it doesn’t have to follow real-world rules. \nCollage allows the artist to invent new worlds. Worlds where there is no gravity\, where water flows through the desert\, or where children are in charge. In this project\, images from magazines or from old tintypes will be put together to create a sense of a story in pictures. Come join Jo Powell in making a collage and explore new worlds. \nAbout Jo Powell\n\n“Art is an expression. We express what and how we see or feel. Anyone can make art because everyone has feelings and can perceive.” — Jo Powell \n\nThis is a firm belief of the local artist\, Jo Powell. She taught art for 25 years for the American school system overseas in Germany and then retired to the Black Hills where she continues to explore art in its many forms. \nJo Powell received a degree in Fine Arts and Sociology from Benedictine College in Atchison\, KS. She completed an M.A. in Art Education and a PhD in Educational Policy from the University of Illinois. After a 3 year tour of duty with the Army in Germany\, she decided to stay and found a job teaching Elementary and Middle School Art for children of the U.S. military in Germany. 26 years later\, she retired to Spearfish to be near family. She enjoys the small town sense of community\, its arts orientation\, and the inspiration gained from living with the beauty of the Bill Hills. \n

SUMMARY:Workshop: Weaving on a Picture Frame (RE:Create)
DESCRIPTION:Weaving on a Picture Frame\nWeaving can be simple and easy. We’ll learn basic vocabulary and simple methods using only a small picture frame and some yarn. Anyone can do this as there is no such thing as perfection. All levels of ability\, beginner to expert\, are encouraged to attend. You’ll end up with a picture sized weaving or perhaps a coaster for your hot cocoa mugs! This workshop is lead by Mary Baker and Cindy Wilson. \nThis is a FREE event presented by ArtCentral Spearfish. All materials are included. Recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger children may attend but must be accompanied by an adult. \nAbout the Artists\n Mary Baker was born and raised 20 minutes north of San Francisco. She especially\, to the frustration of her mother\, loved picking up objects and using them in “found object art.” At that time she received a rock tumbler as a gift\, which sparked a focused interest in rocks.\n In a brand new high school\, in an art department stocked with anything and everything\, Mary was introduced to ceramics\, printmaking\, spinning fiber\, painting\, and weaving. \nCindy Wilson bio not available at the time of this article. \n
